Has anybody tried to mod a PAL Dreamcast to be 60 Hz?

Here they explain this mod, it's very similar to the one of the PAL Neo Geo CD:

<a href="http://www.geocities.com/dcmod2000/palntsc.htm" target="_blank">http://www.geocities.com/dcmod2000/palntsc.htm</a>

Only that you have to connect 2 points instead of cutting a jumper.

What do you tink? I might try it.

interesting, looks like a piece of piss to do too.

Are you having trouble running some imports with dcx though? I'm not really sure what the point in doing it would be......

Well, so far I still haven't tried my DC-X with imports, only with PAL games with disparate results. You know, most PAL games have 50/60 Hz selector, but some only work at 50 Hz. I've tried DC-X with 3 of those games, and only 1 was displayed in 60 Hz: Grandia 2. Skies of Arcadia and Deadly Skies continued at 50 Hz.
When I get some imports (Ikaruga is on the way and I'm considering KoF 2000) I hope DC-X will make them work at 60 Hz. And there are some new Jap games like Sakura Wars that run very bad in a PAL console, let's see if DC-X helps.
Also, doing that mod would let me boot all games directly in 60 Hz without having to do that swap with DC-X.

I see, seems like a pretty good idea then mate, think I might give it a shot myself.

you should get more joy getting dcx to play imports than you wil forcing 50hz games in 60 though.

dude, let me clear this up for you once and for all:

DC-X WILL run EVERY jap / usa game in 60HZ on a PAL dc.

no exceptions!!!!

So don't worry, i have KOF2K for dc and the DC-X boots it up perfect in 60hz - just like all of my other jap and us imports.

sorry if this sounds like flaming but you honestly don't ever need to worry about booting your imports in 60HZ - it WILL do it.

about booting 50hz pal games in 60hz without the option-

yes i have also encountered the same probs as you.

i thought DC-x would ALWAYS boot up a 50hz only PAL dc game in 60hz.

i tried sega rally 2, hydro thunder and evil twin,(all PAL with no 60hz option) and they all booted up in 60hz.

however i tried Blue Stinger using the method and that would still only run in 50HZ

so it's a bit hit/miss with reagrds to booting pal games in 60hz via the dc-x.

BTW, that mod does look cool, i hope it works out fine for you if you do decide to get it

-all the best!

Yeah, 10in2010, don't worry, that's not flamming, I really appreciate your info. Thanks for your reply.

It's just that I thought that all PAL games would be in 60 Hz, so I was quite surprised/pissed only 33% of the games I tried did. So it is quite random. Oh well, it's better than nothing. If all the import games work at 60 Hz it's OK, specially KoF 2000, I heard there was quite some trouble with in Pal consoles. So if it works OK with the DC-X I'll consider buying it.
I hope I don't have trouble with Ikaruga. What about recent import games like the new Sakura that have serious image problems in a PAL DC? I'll try that game with DC-X, a friend of mine has it.

Sorry if I'm bothering you with that many questions, I really appreciate your help. <img src="graemlins/mrt2.gif" border="0" alt="[Mr T]" />

Risky, you're only supposed to be able to do this to NTSC machines NOT PAL!!! Its a geocities site, hardly concrete credibility.

Anyway, haven't you heard of PAL optimized? If the games don't run 60Hz there's a reason. In some cases its cuz the games have been PAL optimized. e.g. SMB on NES - 1st PAL copies ran too slow, the later ones had been sped up so they played THE SAME as US copies. Perfect Dark on N64 - same.

Amano, before jumping into the mod, I would carefully compare your DC mobo with the one in the picture. I'm not totally sure, but there may be some revisions of DC pcb's, so the mod described on the link may not work with all DC variants.

I think this mod alone is useless without a mod chip, since you would still need a way to boot imports on a EU/US DC, even if it would run on 60Hz. The DC-X already gives you the full 60Hz if possible, so the results wouldn't be different with the mod.

Like eggplant said this is for NTSC consoles only. It forces a pal signal out of a ntsc console and that is it.

It solves the problem of games like DOA2 pal shifting a third of the way down the screen.

Do a search for the R422 mod and it will bring up tony ross (i think his name is) webpage and he is the actual guy who discovered the mod.
