Aero City restoration

I have a pair of pretty rough old Aero City cabs that I've had for maybe -- 4-5 years. They've never been pretty but they do the job. I've decided to properly restore one -- out of the two, due to cabinet dents and such, I feel I can make one really nice cabinet, and I'll find a home for what's left over when I'm done. Currently it's in the process of being torn apart, soon to start sanding, and then take it to a spray booth for a non-traditional color of some sort. Nice speakers, some Sanwa love, etc. Unforutnately the side art is not worth restoring, but perhaps I can get some graphics printed on adhesive someday and bring it back.

Say what you will about this cabinet, it's small, angular, and very groovy, fits through any door you can throw at it, but the monitors I have are in bad shape, and certainly tweakable, but burnt and I don't think they are something I want in my cab.

I intend on more or less arranging it as a permanent vertical monitor arrangement for shmups, but obviously, as gear keeps coming in, it could be repurposed.

Doing a little research and reading about the 27" (29" tube I think) Makvision HAPP is selling, I thought the 24.8" CGA/EGA/VGA resolution would be nice for it, but I've been told that native tri-sync monitors don't look as good at lower resolutions as the pure low-res monitors. The price is certainly right (a bit over $400 as I recall). In fact, I don't own a vertical 31KHz capable game, or even know what's out there (and my only Horizontal is an AW) Yet, the Makvisions are still cheaper than WG or other comparible 25" and come somewhat recommended. What would YOU do for a monitor?

Second, I don't have any other candies outside of a Neo, so I don't know how common this is, but the JAMMA harness is very short. It's about 8" connected to a fingerboard with straight traces and plugged into a socket, on the back of which the wires come off and spider out to the various systems. I can't tell if this cabinet was retrofitted to JAMMA, or if this connector had some other purpose. When I rewire the cabinet, I think I'm just going to dump it, unless there's something particularly useful about that connector that I don't know and some one here can tip me off to.

Third, any suggestions for tools to remove cylinder locks I don't have keys for? It would seem that the coin door on both my Aeros is not keyed alike, and I have no key, but it is a heavy-duty circular security lock. In fact, my Neo29 control panel needs the locks drilled out too eventually. A quick google search turned up only speciality tools that I was hoping with things like a dremel, drills, etc. I wouldn't have to buy more than a bit. Any recommendations?

Funny you mention AERO CITY..I just was about to throw a (jap) manual I have for AERO CITY Candy cab on Ebay.

I was looking through my manuals and saw this thread..

I think this might actually be the first AERO CITY thread I've even seen in tech..

Got Pics of the cabs?

As you can see I've already gotten started on one, one to play, with a model to restore from in case I forget where anything goes (not that I see that as possible, really)

The second photo shows the JAMMA cable I was talking about.

Dead sexy CPs eh?

By the way, the extra cables in the bottom of the 2nd cabinet are a JAMMA fingerboard and extension for displaying the same game on two cabinets for a VS. There is a Capcom CPS2 connector in there with so many wires I can only assume that cabinet was one half of a 4plyr CPS2 D&D configuration.

you could clean up both cabs and get versus city style setups going...

The first one doesn't look that bad.

You should go dig through killercabs.com... one of the members over there restored his Aero and it came out AMAZING. He even got one of those rare marquee holders on it.

I'm not much of a restorer but I will post a photolog of the major events. Thanks for the tip on Killercabs Bill.

I've disassembled most of the cabinet now and it's completely and utterly disgusting. Dirt from Japan.

I will scrape some into a vial and put it on EBay tomorrow. I'll test your theory. I have the feedback for it.

Anyway, here's the rust and grime I'm dealing with...

Some progress...

The cab broken down, some sanding, and some black primer applied to the smaller pieces. Also, goodbye sideart.

Sorry for the slow story N80G80, only really have the weekends to dig in.

Some cabinet assembly:
P1060530.jpg

We do this right, yo.
P1060537.jpg

Brand new power center, US AC 3 prong wiring, all QD for maintenance. The switch on the right powers the cabinet, but the lighted switch next to it is a separate control for the JAMMA supply so the cabinet can be used with a J-Pac and keep the supply powered down. Yes, the odometer reads 81,339 plays.
P1060538.jpg

Now we start on the JAMMA wiring itself:

The new monitor, a Nieman Displays 3M25 Tri-Sync, 24.8" viewable, 100% FLAT tube. This thing is one sick fucking monitor. It's gorgeous and I've been working with Bob Nieman directly to get it tuned in, who is the nicest guy I've met in the industry. I cannot say enough nice things about him and his products.

A couple of action shots. Yes, the monitor needed manual degaussing after being rotated, because with an automatic degausser, you need to power it down for a while to get it to fire, but when you are playing with it trying to get it running, you just can't wait! Bob is helping me with some minor geometry issues right now over email, the support is extremely good.

Excellent work! That monitor is just gorgeous! How much was the monitor if you don't mind me asking? Wouldn't it be a little too flat for the bezel? Are you going to find a way to overcome the major gap?

Some really nice progress. You should host your own video game version of Overhaul and take old junkers and fix them up. Keep up the good work.

I don't know if this is the same monitor, but if so, you can get one here.

Don't know of these guys are legit, but I came across these monitors as well.

Hopefully danox574 will answer your question.

Awesome work. This thread should be put in a thread Hall of Fame.

I'm restoring an Aero also and I'm struggling to find a modern monitor that is curved enough not to leave gaps with the bezel. With a true flat you'll definitely have gaps. Also, I'm wondering if the picture quality from that hires monitor will be affected by the fumed glass.

Xian Xi:

The Blue Fiero is a heavily modified 87GT (has a 3.4L Turbo, an 88 rear end, and a completely aftermarket tube suspension. I'm planning on rebodying it. The Red Fiero is an all-original 88GT with about 37K on the clock. I drive it during the summer sometimes. I think I might find it a new home this Spring, I've had it for 7 years and put about 1K/yr on it.

Piratero:

Yes, because it's totally flat, the bezel does not fit. We are making a new bezel for it now. The 24.8" viewable 3M25 from Nieman Displays is $459, and I got very reasonable UPS Ground on it out of NY (Amusements plus), as there were no local distributors.

zapatistab:

The monitor referenced is a similar one, a Makvision 24.8" viewable. Makvision is sold by Happ, and has been recommended by some, but Makvision's 24.8" is NOT a flat tube. The 27/29" they sell is a true flat, but their 24.8" viewable is curved. The curve is not as significant as the original Aero monitor however, and from what I could determine, still won't fit the bezel.

I strongly considered the Makvision, as it has one good mention on this forum, but finding information on it was fairly easy. The Makvision does not come highly recommended by all. Since Nieman had a true flat tube, which is what I wanted, and I couldn't find a bad word on them, and I sent Nieman Displays a few questions in email on a SUNDAY afternoon and had a response from Bob Nieman on Sunday night, I was willing to pay the extra $50-$70 or so over the Makvision to get into the Nieman. I could not be happier, except I would have preferred a manual degauss function over the auto-fire on power up they have, since a monitor rotate on this doesn't clean up on the first try. I have been manually degaussing it when rotated. I don't know what the Makvision has.

MKL:

I'm pretty happy with the monitor at CGA resolution, although obviously it looks better in VGA. The smoked glass is probably going away, so for my purposes, it's not an issue, but I have been staring at it and adjusting it, and everyone has their own image tolerance level, but I think I'd be pleased either way.

Sounds awesome bro, did you have any trouble with the new tranny when you put it in or was it a straight swap?
