PSN hackers DEFINITELY have CC info (or at LEAST were able to rack up high PSN charges)

stupid question, but is it possible to remove my card info without logging on my PS3?

And how are you certain this is related to PSN?

Maybe they don't have the info specifically, but given it's $371 charged to Sony Electronic, I feel safe saying my card was at least charged in a shitload of PSn stuff, if not on the SOny site or something else. Either way, I'm getting a new card NOW.

Really?
Welcome to the club.
Just about all Texas state workers have had their personal info exposed on a public website.
I had to put a fraud alert on one of the 3 credit agencies so nothing bad comes of it.
Hopefully.

You should call up the CC company and find out more about where and when the charges were made. Discover is usually good at getting all that together for you and last time something similar happened to a friend they actually got the cops involved and tracked the person down and took care of everything.

whoa.
can sony/psn be liable for shit like this?
though i'm guessing there's something in the TOS which makes sure they aren't.

I'm so glad I don't keep a CC on file for any of my systems. You DO need to call them and let them know though.

Given the charge came through as Sony Electronics NJ (fucking New Jersey), it was at least a shitload of PSN charges, at worst it was someone using my card to make purchases on Sony Electronic store online or something. Either way, I'm not waiting for something else to happen. Card closed, charge gone.

Same here. iTunes, XBLA, PSN, all that shit. Prepaid all the way. I try not to put my CC info where it can be grabbed and I also try to to support The Man.

I've always wondered about this. When someone steals your card and buys shit on PSN (just for example) and the CC company says "don't worry about it, we subtracted it from your bill," did the CC company take a loss or are they being reimbursed by the store or whatever that took the card / money?

I'm not sure who takes the hit in this situation though, the cc company or the store.
But in this case does it really matter?
It's not like this is tangible product.
Refunds for fraudulent purchases should be fairly easy to resolve in this situation.

100% of the time, the credit card company charges back against the seller/store. Meaning, your credit card company removes payment and the seller gets left holding the bill.

Could they have gotten your CC info elsewhere and simply used it on PSN? Years ago there were some hackers that installed an entire fake ATM in one of the malls in Connecticut, you might have fallen prey to one of the much common skimmers prevalent in gas stations.

I leave my card on file everywhere. I've had a few problems here and there but it has never been an issue to get the balance taken off immediately. I have found CC companies to be efficient and courteous when handling fraud. There's a difference though - I NEVER give out my debit/check card.

credit card - their money, they have an interest in getting it back.

debit card - your money. I've seen one of my friends lose out to a bank that just wouldn't put the $$ back.

Wait, PSN was hacked? I thought PSN going down a day after the MK release was too closely timed to be a coincidence. Someone performed a Fatality on PSN. ;)

If the charge was to a Jersey Sony location it wasn't PSN... iirc the location or city name for PSN charges is the phone number (toll free) for PSN, at least in the US.
Was probably a Sony store.

If the hack was dev access, it would seem to me that they wouldn't have CC access unless they then proceeded to hit other security holes. Why would PSN give direct user credit card info to a dev? I would assume that PSN handles all the charges and feeds back the developer their cut. Other user information might be available such as screen names and locations?! But meh.

Just glad you got it cleared up man!

This is why it's important for all online retailers to require a card code when making a purchase without the physical card (and phone purchases). PCI compliance states you cannot store the 3-4 digit card code no matter what, so even if hackers were to steal your CC #, name, billing address, they wouldn't be able to use it without the card code. If Sony is storing the card code they're doing something seriously wrong.

Even online merchant gateways aren't allowed to store card codes.

sony is not storing the for digit code just the cc number thats pretty much transmitted in the open. msft also store the cc info as well i dont think its unsecured though.

the dev hack is not the problem either
