Fatal Fury (Garou Densetsu) for Super NES Move List, Character Information, and Other Good Stuff [ insert lame ASCII art here ] 16 April 2000 v 1.00 S the Great s_the_great@hotmail.com http://s.the.great.8m.com/ Fatal Fury Platform: Super NES Developer: SNK Publisher: Takara Year(s): 1991, 1992 Genre: Fighting ================= Story of This FAQ ================= That's right. Assuming you're going to read this whole thing from Byte 1 to Byte 21700, I'm going to start off by wasting your time with the story of the making of this FAQ. I've been a fan of this game since 1992, a year after its Neo·Geo coun- terpart's release. Now, I enjoyed playing this game immensely whenever I rented it, and I always had to stick to the SNES version, since I didn't own a Genesis until it became the stuff of retro gamers (I've always been behind the times in the video gaming industry, so I like to call myself a retro gamer; that way I don't seem as clueless as I really am.) and the Neo·Geo has always been out of my price range. (I have played both other versions, though.) However, I could never find a copy of the manual of the game, and I was really looking, too. Ev- en when I bought the game, it was in the "bargain bin" sans manual. Because I never had the manual, I was missing out on the backstories of the characters and their moves. Fatal Fury has a history of being the most slammed fighting game ever. It's been called a poor-looking, lethargic, unimp- ressive Street Fighter II clone. In its defense, it's fun to play, dammit! The graphics are indeed nothing special, but they're more-or-less on the same level as the first Street Fighter II game. It doesn't need to be innovative or groundbreaking (although the Neo·Geo version, with its multi-plane fighting, time-of-day changes, and two-against-one mode, WAS innovative to some extent); it's flat-out fun to play, especially the 2-Player mode. Besides, EVERY fight- ing game is a ripoff of Street Fighter II, direct or indirect. Fatal Fury is actually more of a ripoff of the original Street Fighter than anything else. I've played the original Street Fighter, and if Fatal Fury was trying to copy that, it was most definitely an improvement. But I digress. Anyhow, it IS true that the play control ain't so great on this game, which makes finding and executing moves either a chore or a fool's errand. It took me forever to find new moves. Galen Komatsu did a now-famous FAQ using the moves from the Genesis manual. It's great for the Genesis version (which I've since played), but does a body little good for the SNES version. Well, yester- day I got a copy of the Fatal Fury game WITH the manual in the mail, which I'd snagged from eBay a few weeks ago! WOOHOO!!!!!! So, now that the long search is finally over, I'm going to spare the rest of you the pain and horror I went through! I'll also occasionally throw in information from later games for good measure. Wondering what the deal is with the characters? Wondering how in the hell that one computer dude does that one move? Read on, FAQ-reader person! Incidentally, you may be wondering why I wanted the manual so badly. I am currently working on a Fatal Fury/Art of Fighting/King of Fighters site, one that I intend to be the most informative of its kind. With this manual, it will be. When the site's finished, I'll divulge the URL in a future update. In the meantime, visit my totally unrelated site: http://s.the.great.8m.com/. ===== Story ===== South Town: 1991 South Town is probably the most corrupt, violent, decadent cities you will ever visit. In South Town, fighting is a way of life, crime is rampant and unfettered, and the de facto ruler of all the fighting, the organized crime, the drug dealing, and the corruption is Geese Howard. Geese has ruled all crim- inal operations with an iron fist. Ten years ago, when Geese's empire was in its formative stages, there was only one person whom Geese considered a threat, Jeff Bogard. Jeff learned martial arts alongside Geese years before, but their master trusted Jeff over Geese (rightfully), which made Geese insanely jealous. Geese knew Jeff was a better fighter, and Geese had to get rid of Jeff as soon as possible. To make a long story short(er), Geese trapped and killed Jeff Bogard. Every year in South Town, Geese hosts the King of Fighters tournament. Fighters from around the world--using a plethora of different fighting styles-- converge in South Town to fight. Their goal is for the title of the King of Fighters--and the cash prize that comes with it. The defending champion of the King of Fighters tournament is Geese's bodyguard, Billy Kane. Whenever a con- tender defeats him--and that doesn't happen very often--they fight the sponsor of the tournament, Geese Howard. Nobody has ever survived a fight against Geese Howard, and many have tried to defeat him. This year (1991), a number of South Town locals are participating in the tourney. There's Michael Max, professional boxer and beach bum, Richard Myer [sic], Capoeira master and restauranteur, Duck King, a fierce fighter and dancer, and Tung Fu Rue, Jeff's master. Geese also has his three bodyguards thrown in for good measure, Hwa Jai, Raiden, and Billy Kane. However, there are three contenders in particular who interest Geese: Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard, and Joe Higashi. The three call themselves the Lone Wolves. Terry and Andy are the sons of Jeff Bogard who are out for revenge against Geese, joined by their sworn friend Joe. Geese absently dismisses the fighters as posing no threat. They won't be a problem... will they? NOTE: In 1994, the King of Fighters tournament is taken over by Rugal Bernstein and it becomes its own series of games: "King of Fighters '94"; "King of Fight- ers '95"; "King of Fighters '96"; etc. ===== Moves ===== ----- Chart ----- B Back F Forward D Down U Up UB Up & Back UF Up & Forward DB Down & Back DF Down & Forward x, y Do x, then y x + y Do x and y (or y at the end of x) xr Do x repeatedly with Control Pad in neutral QCF Quarter Circle Forward QCB Quarter Circle Back HCF Half Circle Forward HCF Half Circle Back Hold Hold Control Pad in certain direction (A) A Button (Throw) (B) B Button (Kick) (Y) Y Button (Punch) [U] This move is unproven. It's in the manual, but has rarely/never worked for me. [S] I found this move myself; it's not in the manual. [ffs] This data was contradicted by the Fatal Fury Special manual. ----------- Lone Wolves (both players can play; used in Champion Battle) ----------- Terry Bogard ------------ Data Name: Terry Bogard DOB: 15 March 1971 Height: 6'1" [ffs (6')] Weight: 165 lb. [ffs (170 lb.)] Fighting Style: Martial Arts Story Terry is the son of the late martial arts master Jeff Bogard. Terry i- dolized his father and learned how to fight so that he could grow up to be just like Jeff. Terry was devastated when Geese Howard killed Jeff. He has spent the latter half of his life learning how to fight to get his revenge on Geese. Ter- ry is an easy-going guy who likes a good barfight every now and then. Terry is the main character of Fatal Fury, and basically SNK's poster child. Abilities Jump Yes Squat Yes Throw Yes Special Moves QCB + (Y) Burn Knuckle (aka Burning Knuckle) Hold D, U + (Y) Slam Attack (aka Rising Tackle) QCB, UB + (B) Super Shot Kick (aka Crack Shoot) [U] QCF + (Y) Power Wave Andy Bogard ----------- Data Name: Andy Bogard DOB: 16 August 1972 Height: 5'8" Weight: 147 lb. [ffs (152 lb.)] Fighting Style: Kop-po (aka Kopo-ken, Koppo) Story Andy is Terry's little brother. Andy has always been a lot shorter and scrawnier than Terry, much to Andy's chagrin. Andy was probably even more hurt than Terry by Jeff's murder (if that's even possible). Andy spent the next ten years in Japan, learning the art of Koppo from master Hanzo Shiranui. There, he met and befriended Joe Higashi and Mai Shiranui. (Mai is a woman who figures strongly into this game's successors, if you're not familiar with her.) Andy is a fair fighter, but to account for his height disadvantage, he trains intens- ively every single day and makes training his first priority. Andy's goals are to defeat Geese and win a fair fight against his brother. Abilities Jump Yes Squat Yes Throw Yes Moves Hold DB, F + (Y) Body Spin [ffs (Shadow Splitter)] QCF, UF + (Y) Dragon Bullet [U] Hold DB, UF + (B) Shotgun Kick QCB + (Y) Flying Punch Joe Higashi ----------- Data Name: Joe Higashi DOB: 12 March 1972 [ffs (29 March 1972)] Height: 6' Weight: 158 lb. [ffs (159 lb.)] Fighting Style: Mu-e-tai (aka Muetai) Story Joe Higashi is the World Champion of his fighting style, Muetai. He has a strong reputation in both Japan and Thailand. He and Andy Bogard are the best of friends. While Andy is dedicated and reserved, Joe is outgoing and talka- tive. Joe went with Andy to Japan to avenge Andy's father's death. Joe could be kicked out of the Muetai Association for participating in the King of Fighters tournament. (This turns out not to be a problem.) Abilities Jump Yes Squat Yes Throw Yes Moves Hold DB, UF + (B) Slash Kick (Y)r Machine Gun Punch QCF, UF + (B) Tiger Kick [U] HCF + (Y) Hurricane Uppercut NOTE: The Street Fighter series calls Joe's fighting style "Muay Thai." ------------------- Computer Characters (second player can use; computer uses in Champion Battle) ------------------- Michael Max ----------- Data Name: Michael Max DOB: 17 September 1966 Height: 5'11" Weight: 204 lb. Fighting Style: Boxing Story Michael Max is a professional boxer from South Town. He hates rules, and would like to fight to the death if he could. He has entered the King of Fighters tournament to give him a chance to use all the violence he wants... and win. He enjoys hanging out at Sound Beach. Abilities Jump No Squat Yes Throw No Moves QCF, UF, U + (Y) Tornado Uppercut (Y)r Rushing Punch Hold B, F + (Y) Gust Punch [S] B, B Step Away [S] NOTE: Michael Max can't throw kicks; he throws punches instead. Richard Myer ------------ Data Name: Richard Meyer DOB: 22 February 1962 Height: 6'2" Weight: 174 lb. Fighting Style: Kapo-Era (aka Capoeira) Story Richard Myer is an expert at Capoeira, a kick-based Brazilian and Afri- can form of martial arts with an irregular rhythm. He enrolled in the King of Fighters tournament to demonstrate Capoeira's power. When he's not fighting, he manages the Pao Pao Cafe (aka the Pow-Pow Cafe), a restaurant in South Town. Abilities Jump Yes Squat No Throw No Moves Hold D, U + (Y) Hand-Stand Kick QCF, UF + (B) Rolling Kick [U] NOTE: Richard Myer's last name is actually spelled "Meyer." That's the spelling in the Neo·Geo version, which is the definitive version in terms of continuity. NOTE: The computer's Richard Meyer has a move wherein he clings to the wall and kicks at the enemy. I have yet to figure out how to do that move, and I don't believe it's possible for human players. NOTE: Notice that the computer invariably never performs the Hand-Stand Kick or Rolling Kick. I personally thought that was odd. NOTE: Richard Meyer can't throw punches; he throws kicks instead. Duck King --------- Data Name: Duck King DOB: 22 February 1967 Height: 6'3" [ffs (5'9")] Weight: 136 lb. [ffs (137 lb.)] Fighting Style: Martial Arts [ffs (Street Dancing)] Story Duck King has always been quick and agile. He fights using a style he calls "street dancing," which is basically hip-hop dancing adapted to kick some ass! He can't hit as hard as the other fighters (or so it's been said), but his speed more than makes up for it. However, Duck has never been able to beat Ter- ry Bogard in a fight, and intends to do that in this tournament. Abilities Jump Yes Squat Yes Throw Yes Moves Hold B, F + (Y) Head Spin Attack HCF + (A) Backdrop Tung Fu Rue ----------- Data Name: Tung Fu Rue DOB: 14 April 1924 Height: 5'5" [ffs (5'3")] Weight: 101 lbs Fighting Style: Tai-Kyoku-Ken Story Tung Fu Rue may look like a harmless old man, but make no mistake, he is probably the most powerful user of Tai-Kyoku-Ken the world has ever known. He knows secret techniques and is able to change into something a lot bigger, dangerous, and more powerful (assuming he wasn't already). Tung was Jeff's tea- cher before Jeff died. He is in the tournament to avenge Jeff. Abilities Jump Yes Squat No Throw No Moves (small) QCB + (Y) Sen-Shippo [S] (large) Hold D, U + (B) Hurricane Kick Hold B, F + (Y) Hurricane Punch [ffs (Sen-Pu-Go-Ken)] NOTE: Tung transforms automatically. The first time, he goes from small to large when about a third of his energy is depleted. He reverts to small when the next third of his energy is depleted. NOTE: Tung can't be thrown when he is large. Hwa Jai ------- Data Name: Hwa Jai DOB: 24 June 1964 Height: 6' Weight: 154 lb. Fighting Style: Mu-e-tai (aka Muetai) Story "Dragon Kick" Hwa Jai lost the Muetai Championship to Joe Higashi. In- dignant over his loss, Hwa is out for revenge. This time, he's a bodyguard for Geese Howard. Hwa's strange actions lead other fighters to believe he's insane. It's debatable, but it is true that he becomes a lot more powerful when drunk. Abilities Jump Yes Squat Yes Throw Yes Moves QCF, UF + (B) Dragon Kick HCB + (A) Back-Breaker NOTE: The manual says the motion of the Back-Breaker is HCF (and has a picture depicting the same). However, that move is the exact same as Hwa's normal throw. The correct move is above. NOTE: Hwa Jai can only do the Dragon Kick when he's intoxicated. When about a third of his energy is depleted, Ripper (Geese's non-fighting henchman) hands him a bottle of liquor, which seems to empower Hwa. Once intoxicated, he hits harder and can do the Dragon Kick move. Raiden ------ Data Name: Raiden/Big Bear DOB: 3 March 1964 Height: 6'9" Weight: 462 lb. [ffs (463 lb.)] Fighting Style: Pro-Wrestling Story This Australian pro-wrestler gave up the sport so that he could fight without having to worry about those pesky rules. He now works for Geese, and the King of Fighters tournament makes the perfect outlet for the constant anger inside of him. He now beats people into submission in disguise. Abilities Jump Yes Squat Yes Throw Yes Moves QCF + (Y) Poison Fog [ffs (Breath of Fire)] QCF, UF + (Y) Neck Choker [ffs (Neck Grab)] NOTE: Raiden's throw is more powerful than most special moves! It takes off ov- er a third of your opponent's energy! NOTE: I personally have a very difficult time executing the Poison Fog, but it does work... eventually. Billy Kane ---------- Data Name: Billy Kane DOB: 25 December 1967 Height: 6' [ffs (5'8")] Weight: 169 lb. [ffs (170 lb.)] Fighting Style: Javelin (aka Cudgel, Stick-Fighting, Bojitsu) Story In a lot of ways, Billy Kane is even more psychotic and unscrupulous than his boss, Geese Howard. He was banished from Greece, but now he's Geese Howard's loyal right-hand man. Billy idolizes his boss, and would never betray him. Billy fiercely protects his boss with his rod, and is the absolute master of his fighting style. Billy is the reigning champion of the King of Fighters tournament, but can that change? Abilities Jump Yes Squat No Throw No Moves Hold B, F + (Y) Tornado Jump Stick (Y)r Machine Gun Stick NOTE: If the computer version of Billy throws his rod, he is impervious to all attacks until Ripper replaces it. This isn't true of Billy when he's being con- trolled. Geese Howard ------------ Data Name: Geese Howard DOB: 21 January 1953 Height: 6'1" [ffs (6')] Weight: 180 lb. [ffs (181 lb.)] Fighting Style: Ancient Martial Arts Story Geese Howard is the undisputed leader of the South Town syndicate. He has a number of bodyguards to do his bidding, but he himself is a formidable fight- er. He uses a large mix of different fighting styles. He killed Jeff ten years ago. The Lone Wolves are starting to interest Geese, but Geese still has no i- dea of what they can do. Abilities Jump Yes Squat Yes Throw Yes Moves HCF + (Y) Violent Wave QCF, UF + (Y) Neck Choker [U] NOTE: The ultra-cheap computer version of Geese can throw enemies who jump-kick him while they're in the air. Geese is only the first of SNK's long tradition of bosses who are so damn frustrating that it's almost enough to take all the fun out of the challenge. ====== Ending ====== Each of the Lone Wolves takes down the other fighters one by one. Duck, Richard, Tung, and Michael all went down. Joe defeated Hwa Jai after a long fight in which both were wounded. Terry defeated Raiden. Billy Kane proved to be a tough opponent. It took both Bogard brothers to take him down, and even then it took a lot out of Andy. Geese invited the three up to Geese Tower. No- body had ever survived a fight with Geese. Joe and Andy tried to fight him, but both were tired and haggard and they were defeated. Terry fought Geese and af- ter a long, tiring battle, Terry kept beating up Geese brutally. Terry's fini- sher was throwing Geese out the window of the Geese Tower. Geese is said to have died a few hours later in a hospital. In later games we learn that Geese had faked his death, and came back with a vengeance. But this FAQ isn't about later games, is it? ========= QuickList ========= Here's a quick reference to the special moves in Fatal Fury: Terry QCB + (Y) Burn Knuckle Hold D, U + (Y) Slam Attack QCB, UB + (B) Super Shot Kick QCF + (Y) Power Wave Andy Hold DB, F + (Y) Body Spin QCF, UF + (Y) Dragon Bullet Hold DB, UF + (B) Shotgun Kick QCB + (Y) Flying Punch Joe Hold DB, UF + (B) Slash Kick (Y)r Machine Gun Punch QCF, UF + (B) Tiger Kick HCF + (Y) Hurricane Uppercut Michael QCF, UF, U + (Y) Tornado Uppercut (Y)r Rushing Punch Hold B, F + (Y) Gust Punch B, B Step Away Richard Hold D, U + (Y) Hand-Stand Kick QCF, UF + (B) Rolling Kick Duck Hold B, F + (Y) Head Spin Attack HCF + (A) Backdrop Tung (small) QCB + (Y) Sen-Shippo (large) Hold D, U + (B) Hurricane Kick Hold B, F + (Y) Hurricane Punch Hwa QCF, UF + (B) Dragon Kick HCB + (A) Back-Breaker Raiden QCF + (Y) Poison Fog QCF, UF + (Y) Neck Choker Billy Hold B, F + (Y) Tornado Jump Stick (Y)r Machine Gun Stick Geese HCF + (Y) Violent Wave QCF, UF + (Y) Neck Choker Well, now that I've given you all the manual has to offer (except for the pictures of the characters, but if it's any consolation, about a third of them look totally stupid), get your butt down to the "bargain bin" and buy this game!
