Oh, my bad.

It hasn't stopped anyone from telling people they care about to quit. Don't be a dick.

The shocking image pretty much went over the edge --a lot of us aren't people who chew, etc, and we were caught in the same shocking image for no reason. That's the main reason you're hearing people grumble.

Snuff and German chew aren't that dangerous to your health. Nicotine itself isn't the problem here, even though it can be bad for your heart if you take up too much of it. The fun starts as soon as you light up tobacco because the heat creates all sorts of carcinogenic substances (tars, etc.).

Snus is another beast, the comparably strong impact of a dose on the oral mucosa may become a problem if you use it too often (say one dose every hour or so).

Ah well... you'll get more bad stuff in your lungs if you ride your bicycle in inner-city traffic so it's all relative, eh.

Well and Mike's a grown man and can make his own decisions without some turd yelling about it being bad for you.

Nobody posts in the Beer thread about liver disease.

I've chewed leaf tobacco on a plane. You can get away with it for as long as your neighbours let you.

I didn't really want to talk about it, but that time several months back when TonK was thrown off the roof by his co-worker and spent time in the hospital...

It was snuff.

It's not necessarily due to the flame or nicotine itself, but the "minor ingredients" found in tobacco. In southeast Asia people who chew betel nuts tend to have high risk of oral cancer as well.
