Well, you bought a thing that looks like every other thing…
It looks nothing like a Durango, from any profile. If anything, it probably looks more like a Range Rover Sport... but more reliable.

I think the confusion more in lies with ST vs SRT.

Maybe my sense of SUV aesthetic isn’t as fine tuned as yours. To me everything in that segment is the same, VW Altus and Ford Explorer especially.

911 Carrera S
Everyone. I've had all sorts of people talk about the car at stop signs, gas stations, parking lots.
Notably, i dont think any women have asked about it.

So with mine I find it attracts two groups of men: geninue petrol heads that want to talk to you about the car and your car history leading up to that point, and another group of status symbol chasing arseholes that want to know how much you paid for it. I prefer talking to the former rather than the latter. And the Porsche groups on facebook are even worse - half the time it's middle aged men taking pictures of their cars outside fancy hotels with sugar babies positioned on the bonnet.

As for what laides it attracts (without paying them), well let me tell you... driving my 911 past a Bingo hall in a former mining town got a cheeky wink and a wave from a chav lady - Phwoar! I could collect STDs like Pokemon cards with this thing!

2020 Subaru BRZ (no crazy body mods or anything - the car is beautiful as it is) with some hidden upgrades like STI suspension package, upgraded sound system, etc.

I get lots of complements on the look of my car from both men and women, but very few people know what it is as the 86 line (Toyota 86, Subaru BRZ, Scion FR-S) of cars is not popular in Cincinnati - like, at all. I get the most compliments at drive-thru windows. I get the most confused stares from other Subaru owners who have no idea Subaru has a track car in their consumer line up.

I typically don't like many cars past 2005 or so, but the Toyota 86 / Subaru BRZ is one of those exceptions. Coupe 2+2's are my thing, and the rear wheel drive is icing on the cake. It helps that they look awesome as well. They are rare over here in the UK, especially the Subaru BRZ. In a couple of years I'll either go more retro (Porsche 944 Turbo) or down the 86 / BRZ route for my daily driver, depending on what prices are like for both of these at the time.

I worked with a guy that had the Scion FR-S and rode in it a couple times. Felt cheap and flimsy, I'm sure the Subaru is better. It was also his only car so he was fucked in the Ohio winters.

I have a 2018 Impreza Sport wagon. The only time it ever gets any attention is from people with the same car. WRX and STI owners usually just give me a smug grin of superiority. Like "Oh that's cute... he thinks he has a real car"

lol... Porsches and chavs... noice.

I really like the new GT4, but I think I'm going to hold out for the new Z06 when it hits showrooms later this year.

I had some great fun with the Boxsters I've owned, maybe consider an early Cayman for a daily driver? Probably more reliable than an old 944.

Yeah I quite like the Cayman. I’ve read great things about the newer 718 GT4. My problem with newer cars is the more and more driver assists and weight and other bollocks added I fear might take away from the driving experience for me. I like my cars to be a ‘machine’ first, I have a analogue era mindset. But if someone dropped me the keys to say a brand new Taycan - I wouldn’t say no :)

The Porsche specialist dealer I got my 996 gen 911 from had a newer Cayman in stock for a bit more than my car cost. I asked him what the Caymans are like, and he said ‘to be honest pal, you’ll have more fun in a older 911 than a newer Cayman’ - so, that’s one opinion on them.

A Boxster with the soft roof is a little bit impractical in Scotland - you want a solid roof with a sunroof slot for the 2 weeks a year it doesn’t rain. Cayman makes sense, and some of them are as fast (or faster) as my 996 gen 911.

But from what I’ve read a well serviced 944 should be fine these days as a daily driver. A few years ago they (944s) reached near banger prices and some got neglected by people that wanted the Porsche badge but didn’t know anything about them. I think most those examples are now gone or have been sufficiently brought back up to spec for it not to be much a issue - but I’d probably get a Pre-Purchase-Inspection done by a specialist before buying just to be on the safe side.

Apparently for those reasons the GT4 is a better car than the GT2...

A guy I used to work with had a 924 as a daily driver... apart from the wank fuel economy I don't recall him having too many issues with it.

2013 370Z- Mostly middle age and retired guys will pull me aside and want to chat. They remember primarily the old 240's and 90's 300Z and respect the heritage. Younger guys expect me to be modded out and straight piped but I'm not out drifting or waking up the neighborhood at 2am.

1986 Toyota Corolla (AE86). Young kids like 16-25. Puerto Rican car guys are super into old Toyotas too, so besides the Initial D crowd mostly them.

My dad briefly owned a used up Jaguar XJ6. Probably the most unusual or noteworthy car he ever owned. The only attention it ever got was from a gas station proprietor who gave an unsolicited offer of $3K for it.

Despite Jaguar being associated with luxury or expensive cars, driving that car was a very poor experience. It had a nice wooden looking dashboard and leather seats, but it drove sluggishly, had poor driver leg room, frequently had electronics related problems, and just didn't seem to have good build quality.

My ex's sister married into money and wanted a Jag. It was breaking down on her regularly so she got an Escalade. A little better, lol.

An old ass clownshoe.

It gets attention from old car dudes, import loving Gino dudes, BMW dudes, and cops.

It's basically invisible to women though.

I’m picking up this lovely shitbox next week, a E34 BMW. Feels better in this thread instead of the ‘recently bought’ one.

Obvious question, why?

Why not?

Full answer is:

1. Current generation of BMWs have that fugly buck tooth look on the grill
2. ULEZ is exempt on cars over 30 years old. Fuck you Green party.
3. Those classic Shark look front BMWs are going up in value, but I’m going to use this one as a daily not keep it in a garage.

Mustang Mach-E GT in cyber orange. I get a lot of looks and questions from others since it's still a rare car to see on the road. Still takes some getting used to since I'm used to only driving plain, common, and inexpensive vehicles.

I went to a Porsche car club last night. The meeting was pretty boring and the crowd was late middle aged and grey balding with comb overs. I think I’m about 15 to 20 years too young for it.

On the plus side I met some owners with similar cars to mine who gave me some great advice on local mechanics and where to find parts from, so it wasn’t a total loss. Also some of the things they spoke about doing next year - trips to race circuits, driving to Germany, out door go karting, sounds alright.

I think I’ll need to find another car club with a slightly younger demographic though.

Uh…maybe I’m just used to living in Ann Arbor where the car scene is super diverse but this sounds like a redneck’s first trip to Nordstrom’s. It’s not a Lucid Air for shuck’s sake.

I’ve attached some photos of ‘The Festival of the Unexceptional’ which I was at in the UK a month ago. It’s a car show for old, regular, boring cars which are now becoming very rare as due to their low values 10 or more years ago many have been scrapped.

The green Opel Cadet is the one owned by Richard Hammond from the Botswana Special of Top Gear. I actually spoke to him briefly, he was super nice and as cheeky as his tv persona appears.

The Red Astra in these pics won 1st place. It was flawless and looked factory fresh. Someone had it as a mobility car and cared for it meticulously until it’s current owner bought it last year.

The black car is what won it last year. ‘The Black Knight’ - a special edition Proton and last of it’s kind left on the road in the UK.

A really cool day out, I think I’ll be back next year.

This is Vegas dude. Tons of big money cars on the street.

Mach-Es are starting to show up more, as are Ioniq 5s and EV 6s. They're still really tough to get though with build times of more than half a year. Having a big, orange, rare EV gets plenty of looks. I've only seen one other Mach-E with the same color while driving.
