My 2011 iMac is still completely capable hardware wise, quad core, 32GB RAM, SSD... I only had to upgrade to a newer one because the GPU couldn't handle the newest OSes and High Sierra was the end of the road.
Yeah I still use a 2013 iMac, it's on it's last legs as far as OS support goes but still a decade isn't a bad run.

Which Mac did you get?

I got the new 5k Studio display with an M1 macmini setup. I switched the scaling to full hd 1920x1080. Looks much better, the native 5k scaling i need a magnifying glass to read the text.

I think i need to learn some more keyboard shortcuts to get the full use out of this mac.

2011 iMac checking in.
When it dies I'll probably switch to a Mac mini so I can dual purpose the monitor.
My old laptop runs Linux, when it goes I might get a MacBook. I don't know.
I have nothing truly useful to add to the thread.

Good luck on using your Mac. You will get used to it once you figure it out. At least you are not using Linux. Most Windows user cannot figure that out...
because its not the early nineties anymore and normal people don't want to bother with console commands just to install their video card drivers and whatever else.

I got a 2014 mac mini for the living room TV, no complaints. Nice little duder.

So far I'm really happy with the M1 MacBook pro. And it has a magsafe charge port, multiple USB C, and a 3.5mm audio port still which is actually really nice.

I have an original “unibody” 2008 MacBook that I use pretty much exclusively for Traktor. An absolute gem of a machine, sorta faster than my i5 iMac even now. Core2Duo with 8GB of RAM and an SSD. The only drag is that you can’t get a battery for it anymore.

I miss manually configuring my IRQs.

I actually do view that as a plus.
Lots of devices are eliminating this.
Forcing you to either rely on Bluetooth or buy an adapter.
I have a preference for wired headphones because its one less thing I have to keep charged.
A Bluetooth dongle lets me make any set of phones wireless if I want that.
But then again I have to make sure its charged.
Everything is a tradeoff.

Look to see if you can get it rebuild.
Batteries plus might still do it.
Usually they'll use newer battery technology so you get longer run time and shorter charge periods.

Bluetooth isn't lossless, and you can configure the 3.5mm for 96k audio if you want.

And yeah, I don't want to buy wireless headphones for worse quality, so I'm glad the port is still there.

Bluetooth sucks. It’s fine for kids and for cars and jogging and shit, no place for it in serious production or home theater/audio.

I’ll look into that. The battery door on this thing is a work of art, btw. After this model they switched to “permanent” batteries like iPhones.

I guess if we're talking about how long our Macs last, I retired my 2007 macbook in 2015. Ran like shit after 5 years. Not a bad run, but those last 2 were horrendous. I can still power it on. It just works ... but not so great. The plastic has a weird smell.

I got a beautiful Dell XPS 13 in 2018 for an awesome price and it's still running solid and still looks great.

A computer is a computer. I guess just get what you like unless there's an application that you NEED for mac/pc. I don't see an advantage for either but then again I just use computers for internet, downloading roms and virtual desktop for work

My work gave me a newer dell laptop, and Windows wise, it's... acceptable. CPU/RAM wise no complaints, handles 2 extra monitors, but the build in webcam is potato quality. If you take a lot of meetings and care about the camera/mic quality etc., macs tend to be better off (but again, you pay for it I suppose).

The reason for going (or staying) Apple is the ecosystem (computers, tablets, phone, watch). For power, it's still Windows. For looks you can use either to browse /r/unixporn before you get back to work.

Does anyone know why Filevault is already running on my mac? It says a recovery key has been set.

I did not do this, does this come pre-installed or did i get a refurbished mac? It was sealed from the store though, i did opt for 512ssd and 16gb ram.

(Edit, I initally misread this as the 'only' reason.) Anyway, the integrations like wireless 2nd monitor to an iPad is nice and all, but that's not driving me buying a whole machine. I want reliability and stability, and on the OS scheme of things, windows usually clocks in dead last on those IMO.

I do agree that 99% percent of people just use a browser for everything, but your initial statements are demonstrably false. Have you even looked at the M1 architecture? I don't want to sound like a fanboy but from a technical standpoint the shit is next level impressive.

that hasn't been a thing since windows 95, but linux still wants me to sudo through shit? no thanks, i'd rather just double click on the .exe file to install and be done with it.

@skate323k137, I did mean the main reason for most users. I haven't messed with any Apple Silicon devices, to the best of my knowledge, but I understand the applications of SoC for efficient and small-form devices.

I use Windows on my desktop and Linux on most everything else, though.

I use windows for work, and for software that absolutely requires it (i.e. burning EPROMS).

When I was a system admin I used linux workstations most of the time, but I transitioned over to macs as I slowly climbed the dreaded corporate ladder, because the command line -and- webcam both worked (lol).

I do remember having to leave a bash script in /root/ on my linux workstation that could recompile the nVidia driver every time the kernel updated. That was such a PITA.
