Bro, I know right.
I loved Scrooged as a kid.
No idea if it holds up for me.

It had been so long since I had seen it that I enjoyed it. Nostalgia is a helluva drug. Neat practical effects and a look at a time when cable/network TV was king. I wish The Night the Reindeer Died starring Lee Majors was a real film.

Bill Murray was as old as I am now when the movie came out, that was a trip and yet I still feel like he looks older than me and I am IRL but a mere child.

You guys see then where he plays a hitman who is in the onset stages of Alzheimers? He has to do the hit before he forgets! (ok, that's a bit of an exaggeration but...it's not that far off.)
I really want to watch that specific movie

On the subject of bad films I've been watching some of Liam Neeson's old man action movies. Oh boy. You guys see then where he plays a hitman who is in the onset stages of Alzheimers? He has to do the hit before he forgets! (ok, that's a bit of an exaggeration but...it's not that far off.)

Not sure why I'm doing this to myself.

I watched Scrooged last night. Great Christmas flick. I forgot Bobcat Goldthwait was in it lol. Karen Allen tho :emb:

Action Grandpa playset comes with lifelike arthritic knee joints, and blood pressure medication!

The best thing about those movies is all the editing it takes them to make even the most basic shit look exciting and hide Liams stunt double. Fucking 27 edits in 2.5 second for him jump over a railing.

Oof main dude from Burn Notice was in the once I just watched. He was also on a shitty (new) Statham revenge flick I watched earlier in the year.

Glass Onion- I thought this was supposed to be a comedic murder mystery not a tongue in cheek social commentary... I could get past that if it had still been a solid murder mystery, but it's not. Everything is too over the top in every way; the characters, setting, music, references, up it's own ass pacing and most of all plot. It's a mess and it's smug. Great cast and a solid basic premise with a potentially clever twist. Rich guy invites all of his friends/accomplices to a murder mystery dinner party where it's assumed one of them will kill him. I won't spoil the twist but I will say it's unsatisfying and convoluted to the point of absurdity. Nowhere near as good as Knives Out, this is closer to that awful Death on the Nile from last year. It's like every time Rian Johnson takes one step forward he takes two or three steps back. Saying all that though I think a lot of people will love everything I hated about it.

That's disappointing to hear. I really liked the first one. Still, I plan to watch it sometime in the next few days.

It's still entertaining but it feels like it was made by a completely different person than the first and it's far more stupid.

The Red Queen Kills Seven Times- More Italian nonsense from the 70s. Pretty standard giallo with some supernatural elements. It does have an interesting mix of classic gothic with modern high fashion which helps set it apart a bit.

Glass Onion - Goofier, not as good as the first one. I don't mind humor in these, but it feels like telling a compelling mystery took a backseat to gags. Also, the beginning of the movie went a little overboard with the "covid is happening right now" stuff. Everyone who is watching the movie now doesn't need the context, and anyone who cares enough to watch this forgettable mid tier movie in 30 years will probably have done enough research to know when it takes place and not need all the pointless context either.

Bad Santa 2: Worthy follow up, Santa is bad as always. Perfect Christmas film with the family.

Top Gun Maverick- I can certainly see why it was so successful. All of the aerial stuff and the cinematography in general were very impressive and it was a solid sequel that hit all the right beats for fans of the first and newcomers. My only real issue with it was that it was predictable almost to a fault but that's part of the formula so whatever. Still more satisfying than any comic book or Star Wars movie in years, I hope Hollywood was taking notes.

Not worth making an individual thread but Arrow's Gamera the Showa era shits all over Criterion's Godzilla the Showa era.

Arrow's Gamera audio options have 2 - 5 available Japanese & English, sometimes AIP American International Pictures, commentary. Criterion's Godzilla has at least 5 films that are Japanese only. That's pretty subpar for Criterion especially when all of the JPN only movies have English dubs.

Arrow's extra content is better too.

The only thing Criterion did (arguably) better was the packaging, it's like a coffee table book. Arrow's is a regular size Blu-Ray case which looks nice.

Why would you want the English dubs? Honestly wondering.

Nostalgia mostly. Plus its Criterion and you expect all the bells & whistles in a collection. Also it'll be easier to get my nephews attention before they're able to read at a movie's level.

Spirited is schlockey. It has a couple creative ideas but then spends two hours dragging them out until you don't really care. None of the songs are memorable. Ryan Reynolds doesn't work as the story's scrooge, probably because of the writing, but possibly also miscast.

Muppets Christmas Carol works because Caine plays a completely straight, believable scrooge surrounded by muppets. But in Spirited everyone is in on the meta comedy of the movie, which ultimately means the viewer can't take anything seriously, even the things they want you to.

Rewatching 007 Skyfall. It's as lame as I remembered it being. Feel like Craig started really strong with Casino Royale, fell off in the subsequent movies, and was back to form in the last one. No Time to Die is overly melodramatic but I feel it comes full circle with Bond being tied down by his heartstrings again.

Skyfall is just too confident and upbeat for it's own good.. Dialogues are wonky, much of the time set pieces overly focused on the punchline. It's a dumb film which falls short of what it wants to be, and it drags the aesthetics down with it.
A shame really as the opening sequence is silly but ends on a great scene. The atmosphere is scuandered post opening credits (which are not that great if you compare them with other Bond movies. The song is ok, kind of grinds on though)

The second half of the film is pretty great in many ways. Feels like a different film, hard to enjoy after the boring first hour.
Bardem is too awesome. The climax is on point.
Not a great film, an average Bond movie.

It is a crime how average the Bond movies became after following one of the best movies of the 2000s. I didn't even bother watching the most recent one.

Lake Michigan Monster- Not exactly sure how to describe this. If The Mighty Boosh were from Wisconsin and made Moby Dick is about as close as I can get. A "Sea Captain" assembles a "highly skilled" team to help him track down and murder the sea monster that killed his father. A surreal black and white no budget madcap comedy that's an homage to all things "old timey", nautical and absurd. One of the most original movies I've seen in years. It's on Amazon Prime if you like low budget creativity and offbeat humor in general do yourself a favor and check it out. This is a ready made cult classic waiting to be discovered.
