Assault weapon control would prolly only limit the munitions that could be fired in a short period of time before law enforcements could get the situation under control,
but people wishing to seriously address this issue need to enact measures that were recommended by case studies of Rampage shooting in order to stem the epidemic.

Man Fires Some 50 Shots at Calif. Mall Parking Lot

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. December 16, 2012 (AP)
A man was arrested Saturday after firing about 50 shots in the parking lot of a Southern California shopping mall, prompting a lockdown of stores crowded with holiday shoppers.

Marcos Gurrola, 42, of Garden Grove was taken into custody by bicycle police officers patrolling around the open-air Fashion Island mall around 4:30 p.m., police spokeswoman Cathy Lowe said. She said he fired into the air and onto the ground in the parking lot near a Macy's department store.

No one was injured, but the gunfire caused panic, coming a day after a gunman killed 26 children and adults at a Connecticut elementary school, and days after a deadly mall shooting in Oregon.

The mall was crowded with holiday shoppers and the parking lot was full. Witnesses said they ran, screaming and ducking for cover.

"It's a miracle nobody got injured," said Sven Maric, who said he was celebrating his wife's birthday at a restaurant patio about 50 yards away. "The bullets had to land somewhere, and he shot so many."

Lowe says some stores voluntarily closed their doors and kept shoppers inside while police investigated.

Bret McGaughey, 22, of Laguna Beach, said he was with his mom in the Apple store when shoppers ran to the rear of the store as employees locked the front entrance. He estimated that up to 100 people stayed in the back of the store for about 30 minutes until Apple employees announced that police said it was safe to reopen the doors.

Gurrola was arrested for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon, Lowe said.

There was no telephone listing for Gurrola.

On Tuesday, a gunman at an Oregon shopping mall killed two people and wounded a third amid a holiday crowd estimated at 10,000 people.

Clackamas County authorities are still trying to determine why the gunman opened fire before killing himself.

The suburban Portland mall was closed for two days before reopening on Friday.

All the reports I see say he was taken into custody to await charges, not that he killed himself.

Not that it diminishes the seriousness of the incident, especially given what happened in CT but at the very least we can be thankful no one was killed or injured this time.

What were the measures recommended?

Sadly, I expect more shootings like these until the 21st.

What were the measures recommended?

Stem cuts to psychological health funding initiatives.

Campaign to counter the social template of Rampage shooting, i.e. present the public face of psychological stress and/or despair, emphasize that there is counseling available that is neither expensive, nor will it be detrimental to their image among peers, colleagues, or promotions.

Sometimes Rampage shooters will voice their desire to engage in the acts, during psychologically stressful periods. Suggest to them effective counselors from campaigns to assist them.

And limit control over civilian ownership of weapons/munitions that cause massive deaths within short periods of time. These measures need to strike the balance between "Right to Bear Arms" and "Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness."

All the reports I see say he was taken into custody to await charges, not that he killed himself.

Yeah, I think it was due to the early hour of the posting, I read the article incorrectly, 'cos articles make it a point to connect recent events. Original post has been edited to rectify the error.

Ok, so now in addition to what happened in CT and CA there were also potential school shootings that were prevented in Oklahoma:

and Indiana:

All this over the span of ONE WEEKEND. Seriously, is there something in the water or what?

Copy-Cats.

The holiday season can be especially tough for those who are emotionally disturbed or seriously mentally ill.

Meh, people want to see what they want to see, and the media is too afraid of losing viewers by not appealing to stupidity.
