Freind gave me an old SGI O2 computer.
Something is not right with it. (won't boot)
I am wondering if any of you know anything about SGI computers and could help me out.
Specifically where I can find a copy of irix.
I don't know witch version.
All I really know is that the prossesor is mips baised. ( R5000 200MHz)

Nice little mips machine the O2 was. You can put Irix, Openbsd, debian or gentoo on that box. A decent place to start for you might be wiki

Depending on what you actually want to do with the box, I'd recommend Openbsd (solid as a rock) or debian\gentoo before Irix where you wil find it much more difficult to find binaries to run.

Worst case scenario when you're done playing with it, if the case is still in great shape, use that thing to put a custom Mini-itx into or something. They were sweet little cases.

WHat color lights are you getting on the front of the box? That will tell you if it's a hardware problem.

IF it's not booting because of a software issue, what sort of messages are you getting?

Also, if you want specific error trappings on any problems, hook up a serial cable to the back of your box and one to your PC and turn on Hyperterminal with 9600-8-N-1. The o2 dumps diagnostics and system info through the serial to help determine sever problems.

I've got a copy of Irix for the O2 hanging around here *somewhere* if you give me a few days I can probably give a copy to you.

Also, if you want to find out about what's in the box, get to the shell after you turn it on and run the command hinv

Play around with Irix first, before you switch. I actually prefer it to most linux builds plus it supports the o2's native hardware/capabilities a little bit better... especially REAL TIME video editing.... believe it or not.

Also, hit the p2p's to pick up a copy of Discreet Flame and a few other wonderful pieces of software for the O2.

The little blue toaster of love.... :)

The light goes red - amber - red - amber - green
Then some weird guitar sound.

At first it would get to the splash screen & I could access the "matinace tools" from their.
But now I get A whole bunch of nothing.
I would be ever grateful if you found that copy of irix.
Damn little thnig is calling out for me to mess with it...Only if it would boot.

EDIT,
Little fucker just came back to life.
Still won't boot but I can acces the "matinace tools" for now...

Yes it does.
4GB wide SCSI hdd. (looks to be)
I'm going to power it down & make sure it's all locked tight.
I feckking love the sliding tray / lock design of this thing.

That was going to be my next suggestion..

I love the compartmentalized design of the o2, it's such a techie's dream, about 2 minutes to do ANY work on the machine.

I left in the middle of the conversation, sorry about that! What was wrong with the box? The HD?

The root password is a little bit easier to get out of it... I'll find the SGI root PW fixer doc. I have it aroudn here.

Hey VT thanks for all your help.
I got ahold of my freind who gave it to me & he actually remembered the root password.
I do think their is some hardware problem tho.
Either with the HDD ot (gulp) the main board.
Mostly coz it does not boot everytime you switch it on.
I'll have to look into it some more.
I was getting no display before coz the boot resolution was set obscenely high & obviously out of the range that the little monitor could handle.
Besides it stalling every outher time I try and boot it big problem I am having now is getting the internet to work.
The machine is getting DHCP from my router so I know the eathernet port works.
But navigator (vomit) will not let me access the internet no matter what settings I use. (inside navigator or O2)

root@zeus:~# cat /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 62.31.176.39
nameserver 194.117.134.19
nameserver 195.188.53.175
root@zeus:~#

put your nameservers in from your ISP or from your router

in the format I have above, then try pinging google by name 'ping www.google.com'

if so, you have DNS! :)
