Anyone still playing Warhammer 40K these days? (tabletop game)

why even do anything?

If you want to pirate 40K by all means do it. Hell I have some recast Death Korps of Krieg somewhere in my minis stash.

For me it’s just like with television. If I have to pirate it to get it, fuck it - I’ll watch something else.

40K is still dear to my heart, of course, but I guess I’ve moved on.

buy recasts from china or print your own minis.

If something is still in production, than I would just as soon buy if I wanted it. A lot of minis are way past out of production so it's either second hand over priced, or printing and recasts.

Recasts are really hit and miss. I've got some that were better quality than the Forge World stuff, and then I've got some that were crap and smelled really bad. Really bad.

Printing is pretty great though, or at least it can be.

if i can get the same model for a quarter of the cost (the genuine FW knight asterius costs 510€, which is just a ripoff for what you get) and receive a very simliar, if not slightly better quality kit, then my choice is pretty clear.

I buy all of my stuff from the same seller and it never smells that bad. I always wash my kits anyway, that makes it smell even less.
I sometimes have to use the good old heatgun to bend some pieces back into shape, but that also happens with real Forgeworld kits.

The single mini's are definitively overpriced. The boxsets are about right.
If it's your only hobby, I don't think it's too bad until you start getting into multiple armies. I have too many hobbies, so I stick with AdMech as my army and a few models here and there.

Unless someone just loves the current art style for the Citadel miniatures, there are a lot of options now for proxy miniatures. Won't work in official events, obviously, but for friendly games I've seen a lot of people using them. The local hobby shop has a group playing The Old World, and I've seen at least 3 different players with 3D printed armies.

Also, I see a lot of historical figures being used as well. Makes sense though as a lot of historical figures were the original ones used in Warhammer Fantasy. Still, companies like Wargames Atlantic, are putting out a lot of good plastic kits at reasonable prices. They should have some good 40k renegade guard figures out this year. They did a Gamefound campaign last year for an army of them. They also have some good miniatures for penal legions for 40K.

most of GW's minis are good, the really shitty ones (something like finecasts) got almost all phased out and more FW kits are getting plastic versions. i just think GW is a terrible company (with a great product) and their prices stand in no sensible relation to what they offer and their profit margin probably rivals, if not exceeds LEGO's these days (not only kits, but accessories and paint aswell, can't believe they never moved over to dropper bottles for their ranges), therefore I buy my shit from lonesage's father in law back in china these days and I regret nothing.

here's GW featuring a recast army in white dwarf and not realizing it:

For cereal.
Seems to me that for the cost of a few sets you could buy an entry level 3D printer like an ender and just tell current GW to go fuck themselves.

NGL, I've bought some recasts, and they are still expensive. Plus you have to wait months for arrival.

What am I looking at?

Is that a graded model kit?

Collecting unopened kits, with no intent to assemble or kitbash, seems anathema to the hobby itself

Yeah, I just was kind of dumbstruck by the whole idea of it.

It is an ebay listing.

Funny thing is, there are several of those boxes for sale, new and sealed, for more than he is asking for the graded one. Not saying they are selling, but he should have least aimed high with the bullshit.

Well, I've taken things to the next goob level.

I started making scans of my out of print Warhammer figures.

So here is a necromancer from the Mordheim range.

I've printed out a few scans and so far so good.
