A couple of weeks ago my buddy who is an arcade operator told me he had just bought another operator's route in town. Among the gems he got in the buy was this monster, which I had to take off his hands.

The medium res monitor is nice and bright. Everything looks really sharp. The only issue is a bit of burn in where the "Insert Coin" prompt comes up, but you can't see it when the game is on.

The one thing that really surprised me is the artwork. All of it is intact aside from a tiny scuff on the control panel. There's zero sunfade too. Honestly, I'd be surprised if this machine had been moved off of this location before.

My only gripe, and it's a small one, is that there's only one original Sega gun. The other is a Happ 45, but both are very accurate. Down the road I might grab another Sega gun, but for the time being I'm happy. Also, the marquee light is burnt out, but a quick trip to the hardware store will have that taken care of.

Overall, not a bad haul.

That is indeed a good get. How much did it set you back? It is immaculate. Congrats. The Sega guns are pretty expensive. I would get another Red Happ gun until I can find a cheap Sega gun. You're lucky in that Happ guns were compatible with HOTD. Later on Sega made their guns incompatible so it wasn't so easy to repair a broken gun.

Thanks, Mitsurugi. I got it for $600, which I think was well worth it. I've seen Sega guns go from 150-200 dollars, and the 29 inch medium res monitor isn't cheap, so I think I definitely got my money's worth. I was unaware that Sega made their guns incompatible with newer games, that's definitely good to know.

I just have to say that this is one sweet cab!! I would love to have a light gun cab, let alone House of the Dead. I know nothing about light gun cabs, would you be able to put say a Naomi board and House of the Dead 2 or how about a Chihiro and House of the Dead 3 or Virtua Cop 3 in this with out major modifications. Just wonder how universal light gun cabs and games are?

Its a Sega game, so its not JAMMA. Only games from the same pcb class will work in that cab. Naomi was Jamma but Sega was anti-jamma for some reason.

On that note, Virtua Cop and Virtua Cop 2 should work fine on this cab. Also, I'd hate to play HOTD 3 on anything other than it's dedicated cab. It's all about the shotguns!

That's a heck of a deal, especially for a cab with everything intact and nice looking sideart. Most arcade ops will try to milk a grand out of this cab assuming it's going back out on route, and trying to find one without damage to the sideart is near impossible. Congrats on a great score and an awesome light gun game!

Thanks Mikhail, I'm still geeking over the purchase, that's for sure. We had a small arcade gathering last night and there wasn't a minute people weren't glued to that cabinet. This machine actually was on route when I bought it. I was honestly really surprised that my friend, the operator, only had the cabinet himself for a few weeks before selling it. He never even found out if it was an earner or not, not that I'm complaining.

Thanks Loegan. Now I just need to find a nice Carnevil to pair it with!

Agreed 100%

Great score, and I'd definitely keep an eye out for Virtual Cop 2 as that would be a ton of fun to switch out with HOTD.

I'm all over it man. I've been playing the hell out of the Saturn version for the past few weeks and would love to have the PCB in my collection.

Shot a video of the game running on my phone, it's a bit fuzzy because the HD file was too big to upload, but here goes.

Fucking awesome.

The closest I'll ever get is running HOTD2 via the DC on my Blast. Which is still pretty satisfying in it's own way.

Real nice cab man. Do you know how difficult it is to get your hands on ANY of the dedicated HOTD machines and here you found one in good condition that was on route god knows where.

If I where you I would decide now if you plan on replacing that gun with a OEM sega part. There is no guarantee that you will be able to get the needed part from Sega in the distant future. Little know fact here, did you know Sega has lost the source code for the HOTD 1 arcade game and no longer has it on hand.

I would kill for a HOTD 4 machine, also would love a HOTD3.

Where is my HOTD4 and Virtual Cop3 port. Hell where is Planet Harriers

You know, up until I was in the market for a HOTD I figured they were really common finds. Then I started reading around and found that that isn't the case, especially not with the 29'' pedestal cabinets. It's funny to me that literally the week I started thinking about getting one this kind of fell into my lap. I've had a few arcade purchases happen that way.

Thanks for the heads up on the gun. I'm definitely considering finding an OEM gun, though I have to be honest, Happ's universal recoil kit sounds very tempting. Blasting ghouls with quality blowback guns sounds damn awesome to me. I'll be keeping an eye out for a new gun down the road though, that's for sure.

That's really interesting that Sega lost the source code for HOTD, I knew they did for Panzer Dragoon Saga, but this is news to me.

Seeing the video really makes me sad I don't have the space for something like this :( but at the same time glad that it's in a good home and getting much deserved love. It looks like a joy to play. Honestly, this is still one of the best light gun games out there. It retained the zombie feel throughout unlike subsequent HotD entries.
