Bacon may disappear in California as pig rules take effect

At the beginning of next year, California will begin enforcing an animal welfare proposition approved overwhelmingly by voters in 2018 that requires more space for breeding pigs, egg-laying chickens and veal calves. National veal and egg producers are optimistic they can meet the new standards, but only 4% of hog operations now comply with the new rules. Unless the courts intervene or the state temporarily allows non-compliant meat to be sold in the state, California will lose almost all of its pork supply, much of which comes from Iowa, and pork producers will face higher costs to regain a key market.

Animal welfare organizations for years have been pushing for more humane treatment of farm animals but the California rules could be a rare case of consumers clearly paying a price for their beliefs.

With little time left to build new facilities, inseminate sows and process the offspring by January, it’s hard to see how the pork industry can adequately supply California, which consumes roughly 15% of all pork produced in the country.

“We are very concerned about the potential supply impacts and therefore cost increases,” said Matt Sutton, the public policy director for the California Restaurant Association.

California's restaurants and groceries use about 255 million pounds of pork a month, but its farms produce only 45 million pounds, according to Rabobank, a global food and agriculture financial services company.

The National Pork Producers Council has asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture for federal aid to help pay for retrofitting hog facilities around the nation to fill the gap. Hog farmers said they haven't complied because of the cost and because California hasn't yet issued formal regulations on how the new standards will be administered and enforced.

Barry Goodwin, an economist at North Carolina State University, estimated the extra costs at 15% more per animal for a farm with 1,000 breeding pigs.

If half the pork supply was suddenly lost in California, bacon prices would jump 60%, meaning a $6 package would rise to about $9.60, according to a study by the Hatamiya Group, a consulting firm hired by opponents of the state proposition.

We are humanizing animals that have no clue what the fuck we’re on. You give chickens a lot of space and they will still huddle together and stay where their minds think they are safe. I don’t imagine pigs, despite higher intelligence, will be much better.

A meat packing company in So. Cal., Pico Rivera to be exact, had their cattle escape.

This was all over the news here. Some people tried to round them up themselves, including the owner of the meat packing company, but it didn't go well.

The owner of the meat packing company was offered homes and sanctuaries for the runaway cows, but he declined and got his revenge.

"I'm in the meat business."

Once in a while when I drive by the meat packing company, you'll see people protesting or praying/blessing the animals that are being unloaded. Additionally, the mayor of Pico Rivera said that he will not allow another meat packer to open a business here. I don't get it, he should be happy someone wants to open a business in the city.

It seems common for Americans to be against development in general. I blame 80s/90s shows and movies where the villain is a developer and a big meany because he wants to cut down trees and, gasp, build an apartment complex or something.

Oh no! They’re coming to take our cruelty! What will all the gamers eat? They can’t survive on Mountain Dew alone!

If this was a real story I’d be happy. Bacon, and all the inhuman foods that rapidly kill the humans eating them, are way too cheap and easy to get in the US. The fat fucks of America need less not more. However I’m pretty sure this is a mostly bullshit story made to get clicks from retards. Most of the coverage I found is local news channels…not local to CA, usually a sign of something. It will probably amount to nothing. In fact I’m pretty sure I already made a very similar post about something very similar in the past and forgot about it. These “they’re coming to get your [vice]” threads are so depressingly Facebook-grade. If there were more rednecks here it would be about guns.

We’re trying to end the war on drugs in CA. There is a bill in the legislature right now that would decriminalize possession of certain psychedelics.

I just ate a bacon, egg, and cheese burrito 🌯
It was damn good. I feel bad for lactovegans. (Although, they can have make an almond flour tortilla, cashew cheese, coconut bacon, and tofu/yogurt egg sustitute breakfast burrito.)

I just don't want to pay $10 a pound for bacon.

Yesterday, at commercial business center Costco they had a pack with two racks of pork spare ribs for $56! $6 a pound for spare ribs seemed double the norm. I thought to myself, I can go to to a BBQ joint and buy two smoked racks of ribs and get sides for about the same price.

Maybe I've been having some bad bacon luck over the last 10 years,
but it seems you need to spend like $9 to get some decent stuff.
If you don't go top shelf you're just buying a pan/fryer/skillet full of grease.
Anything else is just pure fat slabs.

I've tried buying the ones that have the plastic windows and looking at them and making sure I see marbles of meat.
You get it home and open it up and it's it's just a couple piece on the front in the plastic the back and rest is all just pure fat.
90% of the time I just get turkey bacon. Jenny-O,Buttball, Hormenl they are all pretty much the same and the stuff cost $2-3.

You know what's the worst is lamb.
Several times I bought like a leg of lamb and taken it home, followed the directions or recipe and ended up with two bites of meat and a tray full of grease.
Stuff has always been expensive too like $15-25+. That's somewhere around $10 a bite of meat.
You're pretty much just buying bone and fat.
Those guys are fatballs, I don't know what they feed them, they just eat plants right?
Cuts with no bones or maybe a small one are OK, Make sure they trimmed off most of the fat.
Otherwise just best to get it from a restaurant.

Crab can be like that too.

Part of the appeal of bacon is the fat. Maybe you just don’t like fat?

Also lamb is great. It’s just expensive here because low supply. Go elsewhere and you can get lamb and mutton for days.

Local store has about 3lb pack of “bacon ends and pieces” - if I want bacon I buy that. I usually eat bacon with other things anyway.
