It was made to be something small to go in a kid's room. Also despite being composite only, the image quality was better than the TVs most americans were using at the time.

True, though I'd argue that with a more compact and tasteful design they could've squeezed a 15" screen in roughly the same size. The bezel on this thing is huge (probably because of the "doors").

Don't wanna make fun of the guy who made this video (he's competent and he's got a lot of interesting stuff on his channel) and I don't wanna offend the people who actually own it, but this thing might be the most ridiculous CRT TV I've ever seen. Nothing about it makes sense: a Samsung CRT dedicated to gaming with a whopping 13" screen (!), no scart RGB or even S-Video input for the unlucky american friends, huge elephant ear speakers that double as doors, a subwoofer on the top (because why not), mounted on a ball like some VGA monitors. And a special GX Mode button that does... well, the fact is nobody knows what it does. I guess the audio sounds amazing, but this is definitely the Homer Car of TVs.

I see these for sale all the time. Even saw one for free. Prices go from 20 to 200. People will pay those prices for the novelty of it.

I don't remember anyone selling a 15" screen in the US. There were earlier 12" TV's, but then it was all 13", and the next size after that was 19" or 20".

15" would have been an uncommon tube.

Oh, really? I had no idea some sizes were uncommon in the USA (the more you know...). Here, 12" or 13" were only common for black&white TVs until the Seventies. All my TVs below 14" are clearly built for portability, like camping and such. And it's relatively normal to find 15" or 17".

Definitely Philips, Panasonic and Grundig from the late 80s or early 90s (I see you're from Wales, maybe you got those brands too back in the day). Careful with the luxury brands, they can be a repair nightmare. Also remember that Trinitron screens are only curved horizontally, like a cilinder, so they look different from most screens you've seen (arcade monitors included).

Sony FE-1 or FE-2 chassis are great for 240p. The FE-1 chassis is more sought after.

Grundig, Panasonic, Loewe or Metz are also great. But they often have 100Hz, not for everyone and light guns won't work.
I prefer my Metz or Panasonic for 480i. The Metz also does 480p.

Most CRT TVs I've seen with 100Hz were 16:9 models from the late 90s or early 2000, so if he sticks to 4:3 from an earlier time - as he should - he'll probably be fine. 😁👍

Was very common in Germany, at least for the larger models. Even for the 4:3 ones.
I've had four 100Hz TVs so far. Two are still here. The geometry is perfect on both.

Having 100hz tvs doesnt mean they are locked at 100hz the whole time.

I had a 100hz Philips 29" Flat 4:3 crt that played wonderfuly.

Some 100hz tvs can "go" up to 100hz. Not 100hz all the time.

Also, some of those tvs have suitable tubes for arcade chassis.

The Grundig I posted earlier here was 100Hz and had scanlines. It was even great for 240p. ;_;

If you're in the US, you don't have to necessarily be too picky. Anything new enough to have component video but isn't an early HD set will look great with videogames, and it's easy to convert RGB to component. I'd just avoid anything older than that, I'd rather use a modern monitor with a scaler than a shitty older tube.

This is the converter I would get now. Better to pay more and get something that works well.

Glad to see this response. I've been pining over getting a CRT but its been a real pain to find anything with component so i recently purchased a retorting 5x pro and am now going to get it set up.
