Awesome. Got some great advice in the neo-geo chats. MONITORS.
CRT.

Yup what balls said. Also expand your search for the Panasonic Tau flat tube's. Most of them (if not all) have component and have picture quality on par with the trinitrons. I used to have a 20 inch Tau from 2001 and it looked phenomenal in both s-video and component.

This PVM is costing me so much money.

RGB cables for my RGB capable systems (so far: Genesis, Jaguar, Master System, Saturn, Dreamcast, SNES, and Neo Geo CD) , a new RGB modded N64, a composite modded 7800, composite modded Colecovision, PS2 component cables, scart switchbox, another s-video switch...

I love it, though.

I'm going to go check out this CRT tonight http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/ele/4773586740.html
I'm glad I checked in this thread first. $15 to free seems to be the going cost of most CRTs in Seattle. I'm pretty excited to start getting into this CRT stuff.
That looks just like a set I used to have. It's pretty decent, and the svideo was sharp as hell but it lacked component video. Doesn't compare with later crts using component, but my current set couldn't touch that one in svideo.

I got mine RGB Modded. The guy I got it modded from did a hell of a job, and even installed a power LED mod, and put the palette switch on the front of the system. He even created some SNES to NES controller adapters so I can use my SNES controllers. He also created a SCART RGB cable that uses the multi AV port (like SNES and n64).

Here she is:

Here is a screenshot of my AV Famicom RGB Modded in action (connected to my Mitsubishi XC-3730C):

Someone left a Pansonic Tau 24 inch in the lobby of my building with a sign that said "Free" it had component so I grabbed it.

It put my 2530 to shame even with just s-video, Snes looked spectacular as did everything else. If it supported progressive scan I woulda kept it, but some guy I sold a SNES to saw how good it looked on it offered me $50 for it so I let it go as I had enough CRT's kickin around.

The discoloration on those other shots just makes me sad. Have you taken a degaussing coil to it or anything an attempt to get rid of it? I still haven't gotten around to buying a coil to use on mine, so I'm just wondering.

Gonna do an actual in depth post this time instead of the normal CRT porn shots with the monitor I got last night. Warning lots of pictures just because I hate people on dial up (Sorry SNKorSWM).

Model: Panasonic BT-H1390YN

Specifications:

User Manual: Found Here

Review:

The BT-H1390YN is one of the best RGB monitors I have ever had in my possession. At 750 lines this little 13 inch monitor boasts an ultra sharp and vibrant image that even the higher end PVM's have difficulty achieving (The only two that would come close would be the PVM-14L5 and PVM-14M4U). Scanlines on this little beauty are fairly thick, thanks to its line count, and give the monitor a very sharp/crisp look. The unit is equipped with composite video, s-video, component video, and RGBS. All the video formats supports by it look phenomenal on the BT-H1390YN, including composite video (far better than even my old PVM-20L5 could do). The monitor also does not have any visible dampening wires that seem to be a trademark of the Sony Trinitrons (14 inchers having 1 visible and 20's or larger having 2). Weight wise this monitor weighs a good deal less than a PVM of equal size, I was pretty surprised how light it was when I picked it up. Its light weight and small size make it an excellent monitor for desk duty. So far from what I have tested the monitor seems to take any sync signal I throw at it. In fact, it actually hates the LM1881n sync stripper (the picture is shifted half an inch to the left when using it).

This Panasonic monitor is not without its issues however. The first noticeable thing is the curve of the tube itself. If you are used to gaming on a Sony Trinitron you will need to take a few minutes to get used to how curved this monitor is. You can sort of tell what I mean in the pictures below however this is a very very minor thing. If anything it gives the monitor more of a retro/oldschool feel when playing games. One of my biggest complaints with the BT-H1390YN is the lack of configuration options. Being a re-branded JVC (or vice versa) the BT-H1390YN has the same limited configuration the JVC monitors have. There are no real geometry controls (except for v/h size and position) so better check the monitor itself out before buying if you choose to try one of these little beauties.

In Short:

Pros:
  • Amazing Picture Quality
  • Nice Thick Scanlines
  • Small Size
  • Takes Almost Any Sync Signal
  • Supports Composite, S-Video, Component, and 15Khz RGBS.

Cons:
  • Lacks many nice configuration options (Mostly Geometry)
  • Some people might not like the curve of the CRT

Pictures:

The monitor is far better looking than this in person, my camera just does not want to cooperate.

S-Video

P.S. If people like this sort of review layout and or info I will post monitors up like this in the future.

Skips, this is an excellent way of letting people know how good/bad a monitor is.

Keep up the good work bud, and thanks for sharing.

I'm talking about the other ones on his photobucket. You can see the discoloration at the top left of the waterfall in Shadowman's stage and quite heavily in the Turtles in Time title shot.

Don't worry, they just show up as little boxes with x in the middle. XD

I sold my framemeister and went back to my 19" PVM. Playing retro games on a 55" TV was fun and all but it couldn't replace all the things I love about CRT tech.

Skips, great monitor. This looks exactly the same a my 20" JVC, down to control panel layout on the front and Connection layout on the rear.

edit... oh and try this for the service menu

Press and hold enter, then press degauss key,

A S will show on screen. Press the menu key when the S appears to enter service menu.

The simple setup menu,

Press and hold enter and press menu. Should allow you to adjust H/V Pos and Size

Oh I already was able to get into the H/V Size controls. By geometry I mean it lacks stuff like Pinamp, V-angle, pincushion, ect. All that sort of stuff. What model is your JVC?

I own the JVC BM-H2000PN-K.

This is the full service manual i found. 124 Pages.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3ZFcMWBc84DR2Zqd0NtLVJHTVE/view?usp=sharing.

The service menu is a strange one. The adjustments are numbered. The manual explains what each number represents as an adjustment

This is the page out the manual describing how to enter the service menu.

not a bad monitor. Id grab one if the price is right. A bit less resolution than this one though so its not quite as sharp. Still nice though.

I paid 99p for mine. I thought the resolution is the same? 750 TVL's. Granted my screen is bigger so the smaller will be sharper. Picture and geometry are spot on though.

Heres a better picture,

Never mind I was looking at the manual you linked and it said 620 lines. Went and googled your exact model, its 750.
