I bought Tekken Tag 2 a while back and did the game the disservice of not opening it until a week or two ago.

I have to say, I really enjoyed picking it up, learning/refreshing on a couple of characters, modifying the sh*t out of them and going toe-to-toe with them against the computer and against friends too.

Tag 2 has, single-handedly, managed to rekindle my interest in current-gen (last gen?) fighters and get me to reinvolve myself again.

I have recently been taking a closer look at DOA5 (don't own DOA5U as of yet) and VF5FS.

Now, back in the PS2 era, I was pretty obsessed with VF4 & VF4evo, but... I'm really not connecting with VF5 or FS at all. I just find them really boring and sterile now. I think, I just feel the series peaked with VF4 personally. That is, until VF6 arrives I suppose.

But I'm certainly having MUCH more fun with the characters, fighting style and overall gameplay of DOA5 and TTT2 right now, which I never thought would be the case. Especially as I used to swear by VF4 series.

As a side note, I haven't enjoyed Soul Calibur as much since the Soul Edge... Soul Calibur (DC) days. I liked each iteration less with each release... except SCIII on PS2. As a vs fighter, I actually thought that it was pretty solid and a bit overlooked. Series definitely peaked with SC1 though imo.

Anyway, just wondered what ppl's takes were on the whole VF vs Tekken vs DOA thing and which was your "go to" series, nowadays...?

Never really been a fan of 3D fighting games really. Too stuck on 2D or 2.5D games I suppose.

The most recent games in the Tekken, VF, and DOA series are quite good. All three have been very reliably good for a long time. Problem is, there's almost nothing left in the genre beyond those three.

It's too bad SoulCalibur has steadily declined and DBZ games have sucked across the board after Burst Limit.

I'd really like to see a new IP in the genre.

As for which series I like best, the answer is easily Virtua Fighter.

I really haven't played many 3D fighting games this past gen. I buys them but I don't plays them.

I spent a fair amount of time playing Virtua Fighter 5 (vanilla) and Tekken 6 but that's about it.
I did most of my 3D fighter gaming in the PS2 era, I played a lot of Virtua Fighter 4 Evo, Tekken 5, Dead or Alive 3, Soul Calibur 2 and Soul Calibur 3.

Been meaning to get into TTT2, VF5 FS and DOA5 but always default back to 2D games.

For me, it's DOA 5 Ultimate.

Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate is big on my play list (think I've had it on the weekly play list for a few weeks now). It's become an uber cash grab, but it's for optional stuff, so w/e. The fighting system is much more refined now (nerfed counters) and the characters have come out of the uncanny valley on looks finally as well. Always liked the Rock-Paper-Scissors mechanics for the series, as well. Between the Virtua Fighter characters and the new additions, they've added a lot of flavor to the series now.

Used to be a Tekken fan, but the game keeps going further and further into launchers and I'm just not a fan of that play style as the series keeps going. 5 was ok, but by 6 I was just done with that series. Just not for me now.

Virtua Fighter has a really strong base, but until they can start adding some actually interesting character designs, there's nothing to keep me pulled in that strongly.

All 3 (TTT2, DOA5U, VF5FS) are fun to play with friends. I find myself only having fun with DOA5U in random matches. TTT2 has major issues with abuse of lag and easy launchers, ground bounces, and tag combos to take too seriously anymore. I find myself playing T5DR more often even though the online is horrible on it.

VF5FS is a ghost town plus it's wonky that you can't enter a lobby that a match is already in progress. Kills the fun that way.

I retired from fighters years ago, but I want to know what the opinion of P4 Arena is? It seems like a weird choice of game from Atlus.

Soul Calibur series, until the horrible memory card corrupting glitches started to happen with III.

VF5 FS is my favorite. The only drawback to VF is that you need a buddy to play with. I need to get back into it.

Feels like an awkward version of JoJo's Bizzare Adventure. The lack of moves forces you to use the stand power (or whatever it's called) just to have something to use move wise. JoJo's wasn't amazing w/o the stand power, but at least it wasn't as limited as this game is.

Doesn't sound like something I'd enjoy at all.

VIRTUA FIGHTER 5 FINAL FUCKING SHOWDOWN
even on the buggy ps3 version (lobbys get increasingly unstable the more people join, lag and connection issues in lobby games that don't exist in ranked/player) the netcode at it's best blows everything I've played on console away, I play regularly with friends in korea and japan (I'm in canada) and I punish and land them just frame combos finishers like butter :)

the gameplay is so good it makes people who don't like the game pretend to like the game but avoid playing it because it's too deep.

The problem with the game has been and always will be the learning curve. It's the one game that you will be destroyed, hardcore, by anybody with more knowledge then yourself. I played some friends a few days ago and wasn't trying hard to win and I beat them badly, yet I go against anybody who takes the game seriously and I will be dispatched easily.

I love the game, but never found people around me who really want to spend the necessary time on it to get good. Last time I really worked hard on VF was 4. I give credit to all the hardcore players out there. You really have to take your lumps to exceed at that game.

you're not really wrong here, but it's not only a learning curve thing... tekken has the reputation to be all newby and masher friendly, but really it's not only as deep as VF... in many ways it's deeper and it definitely has a far harder learning curve, But rarely do you hear people refusing to play tekken due to the daunting learning curve. VF has a universal logic to everything that makes it a little more intuitive and easier to understand than alot of other 3d fighters IMO.

I too never played VF just because of the lack of a scene in my area, I finally decided to seriously learn VF when I learned FS's netcode was great. I couldn't be happier about it, most rewarding fighter I've learned so far... when everything clicks VF is like no other game IMO.

EDIT: also in order to get matches online you basically have to play ranked on worldwide (on ps3 anyway) there are plenty of active players but you wont be finding them in player and rooms is frustrating unless you're playing with friendlist people.

DoA5 Ultimate

Team Ninja took note from VF and made changes to the gameplay and art style accordingly. The gameplay changes include an improved counter and stun systems, move sets and combos that are more in line with VF, and the newly introduced critical burst system. The result is a balanced game that is fun as much as it's deep. Sadly, all you see in its media coverage is girls posing in bikini, and it's Team Ninja's fault. My only issue is the dominance of female characters in the roster.

PS: I've never cared about the DoA series before 5, and VF5 was previously my favorite 3D fighter.

Final Showdown is the only 3D fighter you need. Keeping my fingers crossed 6 shows up soon.
