The worst thing that can happen in fictional universes is to establish a power level for characters, or a concrete tier system. I hated it in Dragon Ball Z, which rendered characters like Piccolo, Yamcha, and Tien utterly obsolete whereas in the past they were seen as peers of Goku. I hated it when Capcom introduced it to their characters in the SF universe. I hate it in Star Wars. I've never seen the point, unless it's to dismiss any and all notions of characters presenting a challenge to others in the same universe.
