This month we are playing Raiden IV! All the usual rules apply. Standard settings, no continues. Let’s have some fun.

Cool game, but damn the difficulty ramps up fast. Heavy bomb usage to get to St 3.

Haven’t figured out which weapons I like yet either, any thoughts?

Observations:
- reminds me a bit of the Ghosts n' Goblins problem - I often wait for the weapon powerups to cycle through and in the end I still pick up the "wrong" one
- nice stage backgrounds, good music
- I need to carry one of the screens home from the office which I can rotate, the game is rather small on the laptop
- remakes where I can turn up the music volume and decrease sound effect volume are something I enjoy very much

Weapon picks
- I often try to max the spreadshot and combine it with heat seeking missiles, but I fail - eventually picking up the laser
- I didn't fully explore the options for the homing shot (purple) | bouncing shot (alternative purple) yet. Might try to do a run where I don't even look at the screen, just focus on dodging bullets and let the homing laser do its work. As for the bouncing version: That seems like a weapon pro players can do sick stuff with - I'm just not one of them

Youre not kidding, that second boss was a huge spike

What’s up with the option to be a fairy?

First credit from last night:

GMEGBLN - 6,972,630 - PC (Overkill, Arcade)

I like this game a ton. It's comfort food, like a good burger but not the best burger you've ever had. I don't think it leads the pack in any category ('cept music) but it's very, very competent. A firm, solid 7.5/10. If an alien asked me what a shmup was, I'd probably show them Raiden IV.
I also have fond memories of the 360 version because it was the first shooty I bought with money from my first job. It was a cool time, they were bringing every great shmup overseas. Haven't played it since 2007 though lol

I recall there being a ton of little tricks, especially hidden items, but I don't know if I want to look up scoring strats just yet.

Haven’t figured out which weapons I like yet either, any thoughts?

Toothpaste laser erryday
I should really experiment, I haven't bothered trying all of the missile types especially

btw does TTX2 offer any ship except the standard one? Overkill has 2 options for planes and a fairy. She is lightning fast and has a micro hitbox, so I guess the scores wouldn't be comparable. At least I didn't see any info on the scoreboard related to the ship type - so I guess standard it is?

Only standard ship on TTX2 as far as I know, unless there is an unlock code.

I do like the toothpaste laser, although I find I lose track of bullets behind it. Who knows.

I don't know if it already unlocked on my multi but I can pick the fairy. I just hit down on the screen before you select your special. I don't think you get to select the special if you use madman, I mean the fairy. If you look at my score board you can see I did 2 runs with it, definitely a lot quicker flying around. I think the red ship is P1 and blue is P2.

I gotta see if that works for the 360 version.

Also the toothpaste laser is awesome for clearing those larger enemies, I like combining it with homing missiles to have a bit more coverage.

A maxed out spread weapon is fun and gets good coverage, but the bullets tend to be fairly weak.

Thanks for the tip Dogg, I’ll give that a try. I remember the fairy in Raiden Fighters Jet is pretty squirrelly, I imagine this one is similar.

Broke into double digits but still can’t crack the st 3 boss.

Moved my set up to my HD CRT and even though the picture is a little blurry compared to the lcd I seemed to do better. I had to bomb my way through the 2nd boss...

It's been a little while since I've played this one. Had to do a practice run to knock some rust off, but not bad so far.

I tried rotating the screen on the laptop today and just flipping the whole thing and the screen settings so I had a bigger screen vertically. Made it a bit easier to dodge the bullets.

Projector setups are seriously under rated. I miss my projector area at my old townhouse. Nowhere good to put one at the new place.
