the argument that fat cats are ending WFH to somehow fatten their wallets makes no sense…it’s expensive to provide an office space for people. Much more expensive than letting people work from home.

Clearly the reason behind the move back to offices is because people are not nearly as productive at home as they are in the office. 99% of people are like the granny in Gohan’s example. You fuckers ever go to Target in the middle of the day? Place is PACKED!

I've been remote w/ 50% travel for almost 20 years. I would die in an office environment.

Do you people have any idea how expensive it is to add a dedicated they/them bathroom to an office???

The company may have no stake in real estate. But the board members probably do.

My company has been WFH since 2018-ish (except for roles that require a local office address or technology that can't be replicated at home), sold off all of their real estate and gave 4-digit bonuses to all employees for the purpose of "home office improvement" specifically because we were more productive outside of the office. Foolish companies demand office work to justify corporate real estate purchases and the paychecks of useless middle managers who think that grown adults can't perform tasks without someone literally looking over their shoulder.

I understand that there are some jobs that can't be done from home and people who thrive/work better in an office environment but for the vast majority of us, office work is a financial and emotional burden whose time has come and gone.

This is becoming a disturbing trend.

My company has been work from home since 2020, and no longer has the offices or localized workforce to support returning to the office. I just fear what I'd have to settle for if I ever had to look for work elsewhere.

You'd do what I had to do when I realized the industry I work in is based in NY, Idaho, and Cali ... you settle for less.

I'm sure I'll get out of this rut, but it's been a rough 9 months.

I'm employed but not using the skills I worked on for the past 15+ years.

There are definitely power dynamics involved. The loss of the separate office with the nice view has been a real leveller and thus a huge boner killer.

The whole office hierarchy shit is grotesque.

I only say that because the experience of my present job, which I've held for a decade and which I love, has borne out for me that I not only prefer to work around other people, I enjoy it. It's a great environment. Why WOULDN'T I want to be here every day?

My company wants us to be in the office five a week. In England (perhaps valid to the whole of the UK) you can easily avoid that by creating ad hoc excuses with HR and do three a week.

I never really cared to go that route for the same reasons as the quote. I can’t see myself just constantly working from home.

Do we know what percentage of the American workforce currently works from home full time or part time/hybrid?

I can't think of anything worse than bringing your work into your home. These two things need isolation from eachother, I mean people are already answering work calls and emails at home or worse yet actually whilst on holiday. Get away from office work and save yourself.

I think i’d need to have a separate office building on my property to do it, honestly.

I had just this conversation with my boss today. I told her 'When I leave this place, I don't even think about it. I hate getting those group texts when I'm off work. I'll answer them if my input is required but I just want to focus on me outside of work hours.'

Not sure why doing that requires a separate space and a commute. When my work day is done, I walk out of my office, make myself a drink and boom... I'm not working anymore or thinking about it.

I wear whatever the fuck I want to wear (I threw away 90% of my "work clothes" years ago), I refuse to answer work emails or Teams messages after 5 (outside of legitimate emergencies), save thousands of dollars a year on gas, car maintenance, lunches, time off taken to take care of errands that have to be done during typical office hours and sometimes take a nap in my own bed in the middle of the day. Not to mention the hours of my life wasted every year commuting.

Not telling anyone else how to live their life but other than getting to know your staff and co-workers (which can be organized outside of the office if deemed necessary), you'll have to pull WFH from my cold, dead hands.

I constantly have upper management bitching about "dress codes" for home workers. They expect us to have company logo shirts (either T or polo) on if/when we have team meetings.

Bitch I rarely even have a damn shirt on when Im working. And if I have to have my camera on during a meeting, Im gonna grab the first shirt my hand hits in the closet/laundry basket, be it a comic shirt, band shirt or anything in between. I dont have clients walking into my house and having to be schmoozed by wearing company laundry. Fuck that.

They also try to tell us to "be considerate and coordinate our breaks so there is always someone available." Yeah no, if I have to take a piss or go get coffee, Im just getting up and doing it. No one will dictate if/when I take a break, especially if management is 2 hours away.

They'd have you WFHing on your knees if they could, just so you remember who's in charge.

My wife's company actually showed an increase in productivity when the workforce moved to work from home during the pandemic, they aren't in a rush to go back to the office full time. On the other hand, my company just fired a lady who potentially lost one of our accounts because she apparently was watching her grandbaby instead of doing any actual work.
Yeah that’s the rub - for every two people that are getting more shit done WFH there is one person doing nothing.

If this isn't obvious and challengeable within 48 hours then there was never a real role anyway

And worse yet…when you do identify that someone is slacking off it’s often a lot of time and work before you can get rid of them.

I don’t think folks realize how many protections employees have in place these days…and if anyone thinks people aren’t taking advantage of that ya’ll in la la land.

That's because you're not supposed to get rid of them, you're supposed to manage them
