1.) Referencing to an external URI and creating a local copy of the image does not work any more due to missing file writing permissions (I guess for the group user)

This might be intended to prevent issues with copyright, shouldn't be an option for the users then though (or at least the default for the checkbox to create a local copy should be off)

I'm not sure what the hate is about. I am (and I guess other people are too) happy that there's a non-flash solution on the horizon, you said you want to have it implemented and it is even strongly tied to the forum logins?
