Games with Glitchy Graphics on the NeoSD

I'm not seeing this well-documented anywhere, so I'm posting this here. Any contributions are welcome.

Below are four games known to have glitchy graphics when played on a NeoSD cartridge. Darksoft carts should have the same issues, but Backbit cartridges do not (It is working right for me, and Evie confirmed it supports slow rom).

3 games that use 'slow rom' according to the MAME documentation:
Ninja Commando (intro and in-game sprites get swapped out for one frame)
The King of Fighters '94 (there's now a fan patch that fixes the problem)
Ninja Combat (in theory this game should have glitchy graphics too, but I've yet to see any issue with this game myself)

Super Sidekicks 2 (only when 'in-game trigger' is enabled)

World Heroes - Just discovered this one, and I'm not sure why there's an issue. I've confirmed the problem with both the NeoSD Pro MVS and NeoSD Pro AES. The problem doesn't occur with real carts. If you watch the floor, you'll see the sprites move out of place momentarily at regular intervals. Please see the video capture below:

So where does this leave us? Though the glitches are minor, and some may be okay with it, I now trust this flashcart much less than I used to. I can't use footage from this for my videos because of the glitches. So I'm probably going to be sticking with real cartridges for all my video captures going forward, whether issues have been confirmed for the games or not.

World Heroes' bug is probably from some NeoSD fuckery with interrupts taking longer than they should sometimes. I wonder if it intercepts them somehow.

Yeah maybe, and it makes me wonder what other random games we don't know about have problems, or other subtle stuff going on we're not noticing. That's why I can't trust this cart anymore.

Evie confirmed World Heroes is working properly on Backbit.

No one on AP or otherwise has verified on DarkSoft.

I don't see fixes coming to the NeoSD anytime soon. Alex's comment about Neodev in the NeoSD discord said that he's unreliable. (12/27 - 4:12PM)

Apparently, T.O. can't find another another fpga dev for some reason.

That is what I assumed.

It would be interesting to know if the World Heroes glitch happens on the DS cart or not because that might give us an idea if it's related to the slow rom issue, or more likely something unrelated that the NeoSD is doing.

In theory Ninja Commando could be patched similarly to KOF94, and I wonder if World Heroes could benefit as well.

This is all a feather in the Backbit's cap. I might use that as my main cart going forward, and keep the NeoSD Pro around just becuase the partial CD support is kind of interesting. (I'm not the typical customer though because I'm an obsessed eccentric weirdo -- I own a fuckload of Neo Geo stuff).

He helped me out on their forum. My emails had been ignored for weeks.
That's great. AFAIK, T.O. doesn't respond to emails, and their discord support is sporadic.

The partial CD support is one thing that intrigued me about their cart even though I already own a Neo CD. The exclusive Vengeance Hunter support also intrigued me. Even though IMO the gameplay mechanics were a poor choice, I'm willing to pick it up if it helps the next release come to fruition. Maybe their 2nd game will be more enjoyable to the masses.

If I ever pick up an MVS, I'll probably look into a backbit.

Someone on AP checked and said the World Heroes glitch doesn't happen with the DarkSoft cart. If true, that's weird the NeoSD has this.

I’ll make a contribution..

I can confirm that the Samurai Shodown RPG English translation has graphical artifacts and sound glitches on the NeoSD vengeance hunters edition.

It’s nothing game breaking (so far) and I can post some images of what i’ve seen if people want examples.

Music during battles sounds like nails on a chalkboard, but only during battles. Also, i’ve seen square shapes pop up in random places on the screen, and for whatever reason, Nakoruru’s Hawk is just a cluster of moving blocks, but only when she’s a party member. If you use her as a main character it looks fine.

Good to know, thanks. NGCD support is a different can of worms, separate from the subject of this thread. It's a trick that the NeoSD Pro does, but I'm concerned with supporting basic cartridge roms (the base functionality) in this thread. NGCD support is cool, but half-baked.

It also depends on the copy of the ISO you're using. On my original NeoSD the latest version of the translation patch doesn't have graphical glitches. The only problem is the audio completely glitches out after the first load or so (a known issue). Otherwise it works. TO really should finish it up, because it's SO close to being awesome.

I think the problem goes something like this... These things are advertised as having Neo Geo CD support. It even says "Now supports Neo Geo CD!" and people use that as a basis for their decision to buy one......then they buy one....and load roms onto it....and they half work or don't work at all.. Then the disappointment and anger sets in.

I don't wanna sound whiney, but if something costs $700 and is advertiesd to support something, it should probably support it pretty well.

Fuck yeah, really. They say it supports NGCD, so it should work. There are a bunch of standard NGCD games that don't work at all, last I checked. It's easy for them to cover their asses here by just saying you got a bad copy of the game.

It's a shame because it's so cool -- It's like an ODE for Neo Geo cart systems. It works very similarly to their Sega CD support on the Genesis or PC Engine Everdrive Pro CD support.
