20%???

I've heard the failure rate of launch systems is somewhere around 80%. Eighty Percent!!!! :eek_2:

To tell you the truth, I want a 360 to play Lumines, Gears of War, and to watch HD DVDs, but I'm not buying a product with this high of a failure rate... You say I could always buy a replacement plan, right? Do you think it's wise to buy a product you have no faith in? I have never bought an electronic product replacement plan, and I've never needed one... Should this be the first?

Oh yeah, Microsoft's started giving a big f-u to everyone who's system has died outside of the 90 day warrenty. They charge you something like $139 to fix a $300 system.

And how many launch systems are still in stores to give people problems?

Just buy one. For every system you hear about failing, you don't hear about 9 others that work fine. It stands to reason people aren't going to post about how theirs aren't blowing up.

You own a PS2 right? Trust me, you took more of a chance on that than you would buying a 360.

The 80% came from a post over at teamxbox forums. A phone rep told one of the members over there they've seen close to 80% of the launch systems fail.

http://forum.teamxbox.com/showpost.php?p=8329306&postcount=37

Check the entire thead, it really makes you wonder... At least it did me. :annoyed:

Edit: What's Walmart's return policy? You can return whenever right?

Well, maybe the phone rep was exaggerating to the guy. Not saying that the rate isn't overly high, but 80% sounds like bullshit. If it was even 10% it'd be insane...!

Well, there are failing systems. Honestly the guarantee by Microsoft is good here. A friend called them on monday evening, on wednesday he received an empty box, the delivery boy waited for him to put the console in there and took it back, the next monday he received the new console.

My launch console works great and i think will keep doing (it would have failed earlier otherwise).

I do have the loud dvd drive, but i m not complaining because i have never had a single disk read error, whereas those with the quieter drives experience such things from time to time.

anyway i think the game will kill some... why ? because it is CPU and GPU uber heavy and will make them produce the maximum heat they can, same with memory modules. Add to that that it is getting cold and people over-heat their houses, and i think it will be a system killer for systems with faulty coolers.

It's nowhere near 80%, that would be plastered all over the news for sure. The 3-5% figure is probably closer to reality. And I thought Microsoft upped the warranty to 1 year, am I wrong?

That being said, my launch-era system didn't outright fail, it was just buggy and annoying, so I cashed in the warranty and got a new one a few months ago. The new one works great, but I have had a couple of disc read errors with two different games, both while loading a level. If it becomes frequent, I'm calling Microsoft, but it doesn't seem to be an issue now.

Hardware these days just isn't what it used to be. I have systems that are over a decade old and still work like new. My Master System, Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast and Sega CD are bulletproof, as are every Nintendo product I've ever owned. Is it the trend of manufacturing hardware in China/Mexico/Malaysia that has led to this? It's just sad when no one has faith that a $300 plus console investment is going to last more than a year, and we have to buy these $40 replacement warranties.

80% of all launch 360's failing seems like an incredibly ridiculous number, I really doubt its true.

This is because most of the older systems have no moving parts. And the failure rate for Sega CD and Dreamcast are on par with the 360 in the area of DRE's. Any system that uses a laser to read disc media is prone to failure over time.

Now our consoles are getting more complicated parts, so a failure rate increase is unavoidable.

It's kind of like new cars, they always add fancy gadgets nowadays like turn signals in the mirrors, compass, On-Star, etc. etc. and I always think "Oh great, just another thing to break".

I can understand that, and it holds true for the most part, but what about the Gamecube? I've had a few of them over the years and never had a single problem with any. Nor have any of my friends had problems with their Gamecubes. It's a newer. disc-based console, but it's rare to hear of one failing.

I think it's because the laser doesn't have very far to move. Maybe? There were some problems with a part in Metroid Prime for some people. I've also had my old GC hiccup on me, but it hasn't broken. Nintendo is usually the most reliable game company though, yeah. Also cart based systems rarely break down if you keep the connectors in good shape.

Gamecube is very good hardware as a console, but I've seen them fail... well, used at least, my brother got 2 of them and they had problems, the third one is working flawlessly.

The control hardware on the other part is shitty shitty. Over the years it has just gotten worse. SNES pads were invincible, N64 pads were dog shit. PSOne standard controllers were good, but Dualshock came and it sucks, they all die. PS2 controllers are even shittier. Dreamcast controllers are good, but i hate the pad.

And standards gamecube controllers are crap too. Damn stick and Nintendo can't seem to get it right.

While I'm sure that MS is losing money on the 360 regardless of system failure oor not, when a company releases a new product they do evaluate the failure rate and statistically figure out if it would cost more money to revise the product or just send it out into the market. Now, if the failure rate was 80% that would just be super retarded on MS side. I would assume its under 10%, but who the fuck knows?
