but I still hate when people call homecarts, AES.

I don't think I'll ever accept that name for homecarts.

I'm aware of the arguments for AES, doesn't mean I'll ever like it

Hey, remember when you helped me get my first homecart system running like a decade ago or something? Good stuff...sad memories now though :(

As for me, homecarts/AES carts ARE NeoGeo. I never even knew what MVS was until years after I played a home console, which was around 93. I've always called homecarts "NeoGeo carts". MVS was always the arcade cousin, and are "MVS carts" to me...

Funny how in reality MVS is the "true NeoGeo cart"....but my exposure was to the home version...thus my love for "AES".

Screw made up acronyms. Home carts, MVS and CD, that's it. If you want to talk homebrews then have some NGH or whatever names, but otherwise it has always been and will always be home carts.

Agreed 100%. I never understood the 'AES' trend, esp when the NGF Duo claimed to coin the acronym.

I always considered it as an analog to the NES.

It was fine as Nintendo and Super Nintendo, but now that Nintendo as a company has about 50 systems and variations there is no easy way to distinguish without assigning acronyms.

The Neo is simple. In fact, one could argue that if you tell someone you have a Neo Geo they shouldn't ask what format and should assume it's the home carts unless you say "I have an actual Neo Geo arcade, yeah, that red one we used to hump around when we were 12." :buttrock:

Even when I tell people "You know, the big red cab with four games at the bowling alley?" they look at me like a deer in headlights.

Hate my age group.

LoneSage,

I'm really concerned about you. You've had this Kernow hanging off you for a while now and I think you need to get it checked out.

The term "entertainment system" was originally thought up by Nintendo to keep the consumers from having negative connotations that it's just another "video game" after the Atari Shock, and they even added a trojan horse ROB into the whole package to make it look like a toy. SNK using that term means that they were selling the home system with the mindset of viewing Nintendo Entertainment System as direct competition.

Calling the homecarts NGH makes even less sense than AES if you're avoiding the reference to NGF, after all they're just two letters away in the alphabet, and NGF's stuff were essentially Homebrew.

I find it convenient cause everyone knows what they're talking about.
AES written on the home system
MVS on the arcade cab
good enough to me

I don't see what's the big deal. I mean, it's ON the box isn't it? And MVS was ON the side of the cabinet? I'm impartial either way on "home cart" vs "AES". they both make sense, the AES carts were the HOME CART to the MVS cart...

I can't say I've ever minded it, never seemed to cause any confusion or anything. It also seems to work the best out of the bunch and, outside of this forum, I rarely ever see a different term used now.

I have a feeling it was because of it being just slightly more friendly for ebay auction titles.

search on ebay for 'neo geo ngh' = 3 auctions
search on ebay for 'neo geo home' = ~40 (some falses, majority from same seller)
search on ebay for 'neo geo aes' = 349 auctions

Majority rules. :P

This is what I am thinking.
If someone refuses to recognize what I mean by AES, I say home carts.

It reminds of an experience I had when I was 7 years old, buying buns on a campsite in Austria. I ordered 'Brötchen' (which is the German term for buns) but they ignored my request. An Austrian friend who was with me corrected me: "those are called 'Semmeln' " he said. ("Semmeln" is a local Austrian German term).
They definitely understood what I was asking for, heck, 70% of campers on that campsite came from Germany, yet they stubbornly ignored my request.

I agree, but not because homecarts aren't AES carts; more like VV

And, in fact, my Neo Candy 25 has a small marquee that says "NEO GEO Advanced Entertainment System", and I have to believe that's factory original.

How does official SNK documentation = "argument"?
You clearly don't and won't get it. Leave now.

OK, the way I see it. The Neo Geo in general is the "Advanced Entertainment System". Yes, it says it on the HC system, it says it on the CD system, and it DOES say it on the MVS. Those who doubt me, check your english MVS kit contents and MVS flyers. It's small, but its on there. It even says it rather large on the Neo Deck MVS hotel system.

So calling it AES, just because its on the system doesnt make sense to me.

But in reality, "AES" is here to stay. It's widely accepted and yeah if I were to sell any home carts on eBay, I'd put AES somewhere in the title.

Happy now? I conformed....
