I've been playing hella Lost Planet online recently. I hadn't touched it in ages, but I decided to start playing again in anticipation of Lost Planet: Colonies. Lost Planet has to be the hardest multiplayer game I've ever played. The people who are good at that game are brutally good (especially the Japanese players), and for the first few days I was playing I did nothing but die over and over again.

Yesterday Colonies was released here in Japan (I think it was released a day or two earlier in the 'States) so I went to the game store after work and picked it up. I only got to play for an hour or so, but the new maps are gorgeous (especially Space Assault) and the new modes are lotsa fun. Akrid hunting is a riot. Too bad my TV is so small, those huge Akrid would look awesome on a bigger widescreen.

I know when the original Lost Planet came out, most of the people here panned it. Has anyone gotten into it since then, or is anyone planning to pick up Colonies?

I still think Lost Planet was a great game, and Colonies does look cool. I did enjoy the multiplayer in the original game, but I got consistently raped, especially by Japanese players. I remember getting sniped constantly. I finished the single player game and kind of lost interest in it after that.

If Colonies is ported to PS3 and done well, I will check it out. Unfortunately I won't be able to join you as I don't own a 360 anymore. :crying:

Normally, I would kind of look down on what's basically a re-release, but with a pricetag of what, $30, I might be pretty tempted on this one. I did quite enjoy the original, and I never did quite finish it.

Throw in the new modes, and I will most likely be very tempted to pick this up next week when I stop in to get my reserved copies of Grid and Ninja Gaiden 2, I admit.

I'll have to hit you up for some online. What's your gamertag?

Overall, I enjoyed the original. Single player was pretty fun. Multiplayer was a mixed bag for me though (getting knocked down/staggered felt rather cheap, as did being rendered immobile while tossing a grenade), but I did like it more than GoW and R6V. I'm on the fence about getting Colonies, for now. I'm not sure if the additions are really worth it for me.

I liked Lost Planet a lot but and appreciate this expansion but as tsu said, the online regulars are fucking brutal.

Not that I mind getting my ass handed to me if I'm unprepared, it's just that there's other games out there I'd prefer to devote my time to (see: TF2.)

I don't know... if I didn't have a bunch of games I still needed to beat I'd easily give this a shot, but as of now, I'll probably take an interested but non-participative stance on this.

i have a feeling the lost plant online community is going to be around for the life of the xbox360, possibly beyond [depending on msofts online plan]

so, ill wait for this to drop, or during nother game drought.
but man, i really loved lost planet.
funny how its still one of the best looking 360 games...

I loved Lost Planet and have many, many hours of online play. Been on Warhawk for the last few months though. I'm curious how it'll turn out for the online community for LP. The new one's not compatible with the old one, but maybe there'll be an influx of people online after buying Colonies.

It really doesn't make sense that two editions of the same game aren't compatible in multiplayer. We've got hard drives and online connectivity now, if they change the protocol why not just patch the old version? Lame cashgrab.

A couple of weeks ago I went online to the multiplayer for the 360 version of Lost Planet. I couldn't agree more with you on how difficult it is when you are playing against people who are good at the game. I forget the name of the map I was on, but it is a really large open map in the snow. There is a canyon/ravine near the center of it where you there are several bridges running across. I can't tell you how many times I got picked off as soon as I could see the center of the map. The online players are insanely good at this game, and the Japanese players I ran into are ridiculous. I was looking to try to unlock some of the online achievements, but god almighty it would take awhile. If you're not good at this game, you have to pray you wind up on a good team. It's amazing how quick some matches are when the teams are stacked...one of the matches I played in the mode where you have to reduce the opposing team's thermal energy to zero, we lost in less than 30 seconds.

I might actually check out Colonies because I do like Lost Planet...it's a good game that got really shit reviews from most of the gaming media for no apparent reason IMO.

Weird... I was all set to do a multi-quote reply, but it isn't available.

So going backwards...

@KA
Yeah, this is the first real Japanese "FPS" (it's not actually an FPS but you know what I mean), so there's a lot of national pride. They'll be playing it forever. I admit though, I almost exclusively play with Japanese cause it's nice to jump in a match and not have to deal with 4ngsty l33t v1rg1n t33n4g3rs.

@Joe & GD
Hurry up and come (back) to Tokyo.

@Hentai
Yeah, the stagger effects are annoying as hell until you learn how to master them. It's actually really annoying that the missiles do little or no splash damage, so at least the stagger makes up for it. If you're getting staggered all you can do is pray one of your teammates shows up to bail you out... but if you're in a VS and you can stagger someone, then you get to get a second clear shot at them.

@jro
What?! It's $30?! It's $70 over here in Anime Country.

The trick to the original Lost Planet was learning how to a) throw a grenade at where you think your opponent will roll out of, b) shoot said grenade so it explodes early, c) roll away quickly so no one else can do the same to you. The cool thing about Colonies is that the new modes make this play style unimportant.

There are supposed to be a number of new weapons and playable characters in the 1P campaign mode, though, maybe even a few new missions? I picked it up today and barely glanced at the back of the box, think that was about it. I think I'm making up the last one, just wishing, I think.

I had time to play the first real mission, definitely still fun. Didn't run across any new weapons yet and I was stuck playing as Wayne, of course, but it's just as enjoyable as the first time around.

There's also a new mode where you get X amount of points per level based on your clear time, and how many enemies you kill. Kinda like the scoring system in Halo 3.

Yeah, I re-checked that, and it says three new 1P campaign modes, not three new weapons- I'll take that, I suppose, pretty cool nonetheless.

I'll have to check and see if you can change the setting mid-game, or if you can only set it at the beginning.

Now I'm kind of bummed out I jumped on teh PS3 version. I usually prefer any online game on the 360 over the PS3. I really hope Sony can at least catch up with Microsoft on this component.

I would have picked this up, as I very much enjoyed the original.

However, I refuse to buy a game update that isn't conmpatible with the original game! It would have been so much nicer if this was released as an update over Live.

From what I've read, PC and 360 owners can play together. I may snag this for PC then, when the new video card shows up.
