The little penguin/bird things? I didn't see any of them taking down any Walker's with sticks and logs... they mostly just were in the movie doing cute Minion-y stuff.

People make the argument that the Porgs were unnecessary, thus they must be a cash grab. which is fine either way.

I disagree with the some arguments against the humor content. It was definitely front loaded into the movie, but i think that was done so it wouldn't take away from the tone of the latter half of the movie. The first scene with Poe did seem like it was out of Spaceballs, but it was funny...

Comedy is one of the arguments critics made against Dune(there was no comedy). Dune was considered too dark compared to Star Wars. All seriousness.

Blade Runner 2049 shits all over this movie.

I consider Blade Runner 2 unnecessary, but I consider TLJ insufferable.

Star Wars is dead.

Wow, I was definitely not excited before. Now, I'll probably just wait for it to show up in the redbox.

I haven't seen the new one yet so I can't comment, but the 'comedy' in TFA was awful. Forced into inappropriate situations. Way too many 'jokes' and less focus on sarcasm and deadpan (specifically Leia had some great lines that were 'funny' but not jokes). C-3PO was comic relief with an occasional dumb pun but he never made jokes like whatever the droid's name was in Rogue One. That character was the most insufferable addition to a Star Wars since Ep 1 Jar Jar and Ep 2 Emo Anakin.

Just got back from the theatre. Not being a Star Wars fan, I can objectively say that the movie was average at best to a touch below average realistically. It felt very uneven; there was easily a half hour to 45 mins. that could have been cut to tighten the film up.
One of the aspects I found most jarring was the character CG, namely Snoke and the penguin-esque creatures on Luke's island; every time Snoke was on screen, I was immediately reminded of Golem from the CG of 15 years ago, and the penguin things kept reminding me of that rubbery CG from the Polar Express. Considering there were traditional makeup, prosthesis, and costumes used for a number of other characters, the contrast was rather jarring.
The Casino planet felt like it was stripped right out of episode 1 or 2.

There were some high spots, but all in all, there were far too many missteps here to recommend the film to others...it's more of a "Well, if you've got nothing else to do today..." kind of film.

Another IMO mediocre Star Wars film. I just don't like these last 2 films except for seeing the the Real trio of Luke, Han and Leia at different points and not these lifeless fakes of Poe, Rey and Finn try and fail epicly to fill each of those 3 roles. The rehashed plot and characters just don't work because they are so shallow, empty and the script and acting is very weak.

The best part of the movie is
Spoiler:
the last 15 mins with Luke seeing Leia again, giving her Han's dice and his death, becoming a force ghost. That alone should not be the best part of the movie.

Too bad this isn't the last one because it can't get any worse. Heck, people hated Episode 1-3 and some still do but AoTC and RoTS are way better than these last two pieces of shit.

TLJ could literally be a $12 movie ticket where you walk in, take a seat and JJ Abrams smears a handful of his own shit on my face and there is still no way this statement could be true.

Can't say I care about the new movies. However, I did just re-Watch the Star Wars Holiday Special. As crappy as it is, I think it is still better written than TFA. I've still not been able to sit all the way through that turd.

It's true.

Wow, now I might be back in the "Maybe I should see it". I mean it can't be THAT bad, can it? I saw Kangaroo Jack in theaters for free and was pleasantly surprised.

Let me put it to you like this.

Attack of the Clones is very poorly made film with wooden acting and a lack of organic plot and character development. It has shoddy writing but tells a coherent story with a readily apparent theme and with intentions to open and close a narrative.

The Last Jedi is just left turn after left turn after left turn and repeated, exhausting and tedious 'try/fail' scenarios and the worst plot holes in franchise history. The film is inescapably bad both for Star Wars and for films in general.

People that don't see that this is the worst film in the franchise are, as I said in the 'Movie' thread, stratified in their opinion thaty AotC is the worst thing ever.

But this film is three times as slipshod.

And this is all our fault. We did this. It's on us.

I'll have to go see this, mostly for the family, but honestly I've always asserted that the original three movies, and honestly Jedi was not even close to fun for me, are all that need to exist.

Force Awakens filled me a sense of nostalgic joy and renewed optimism for Star Wars, while Last Jedi took all of those positive feelings and turned them into Porg shit. I am as disappointed with this movie as I was with Phantom Menace and I never in my life believed that could happen to such a degree again.

Between this and Rogue One I’m done with being optimistic about future Star Wars films.

i've only seen 2 Star Wars movies - one was Attack of the Clones (in the theatre) and one was one of the 3 original movies, whichever one had the Death Star in it. I don't remember anything about either of them. Never had the desire to see any of the other movies. Am I missing much?

I could give a shit about Star Ward movies. Growing up toys were cool though. The Rogue Squadron games were awesome on n64 and GameCube. So was the pod racing game.

I do however enjoy looking at Leia cosplay porn.

It is the same actor doing Golem and Snoke. --Andy Serkis

I'll have to catch up on this thread later, but here are my thoughts...

I would cancel Rian Johnson's trilogy if I were Kathleen Kennedy.

The first half of this movie sucks. There's too much slapstick humor (the whole casino city was awful) and the desperation of the resistance's situation is not properly conveyed in tone, style, or anything. They basically just say "Uh-oh, we're in trouble guys!" and expect the audience to be on the edge of their seats. I felt like the stakes were much lower than they were in VII. I like the idea of the interactions between Kylo Ren and Rey, but I don't think they pulled it off, stylistically speaking.

The second half is great.

Porgs are awesome.

Overall I'm disappointed. Hopefully JJ can hit it out of the park with Episode IX.

My updated Best to Worst list is:

V-IV-VII-VI-VIII-III-I-II

"The Last Jedi was absolutely an opportunity to create something original. More specifically, The Last Jedi was an opportunity to make Star Wars weird as fuck again, and Johnson attacked that opportunity like a man possessed.

Rian Johnson allowed Luke Skywalker to drink green milk straight from the boob of an alien. He made it happen and it was glorious."

Naaaaaaaah.

I'm no good at breaking down why I do and don't like a film, so I'll give this simple critique. AotC was boring. Boring as fuck. Thinking about when you last had a shit, and hoping you might need another one soon so you have something else to do levels of boring.

If that isn't the biggest sin a movie can make then I don't know what is.

This film was stupid and misused Luke's character and made them all do dumb as fuck stuff again and again but it wasn't boring.

I also can't help but feel that perhaps we're all just getting a bit too old for this stuff?

Agreed on AotC. That's the one movie I've ever fallen asleep in. Didn't even bother rewatching it on tape, so I haven't seen the final act. I just don't give a shit.

TLJ is nowhere near as bad as AotC. But it's by FAR the weakest outside of the prequels.

I'm fine with Star Wars being weird. Being sporadically weird is lame, though. The pit of darkness should have been extremely fucked up. It should have psychologically destroyed Rey. This entire movie should have been fucked up. Luke shouldn't have been just grouchy. He should have been completely torn up inside. TLJ Luke was just kinda like "Eh, I'm done. Whatever."

Also some obvious / glaring errors:
Spoiler:

Why the FUCK was Lando not the gambler / code cracker?
Why wasn't the ending more somber? 95% of the resistance just DIED

heh. i agree with Lando. I was thinking that the whole time, but i guess he was trying to go straight, and his role in the new cannon is quite weak.
