The Wesley character would be the bad kind of scene-chewer in another movie (along with Jimmy, his kung-fu thug) but somehow it all just works. Don't know what keeps it all together (the performances, tone, Swayze, the premise being so rock simple) but it all just works when there's 100 other similar movies that fail miserably.

Not quite Hollywood- Documentary about the "Ozploitation" genre, which is a pretty dumb term coined by Quentin Tarantino. Basically just low budget and underground movies from Australia. The doc is pretty solid, it's well paced and funny with lots of good behind the scenes footage of stunts and stuff, lots of nudity. (get ready to see some 60s and 70s male nudity) Interviews are not bad but I could do with less Tarantino. My main problem with the movie is that it spends too much time on stuff from the 60s and 70s. They give a small chunk to the 80s then just they just talk about Wolf Creek for 5 minutes and it then ends. Turned me on to Razorback and Next of Kin but aside from some of the old more aussie specific stuff I've seen everything else.

Elvis - Movie 2022 (HBO)

Filmed from the viewpoint of the Colonel (Tom Hanks), complete with lots of monologues.
Did a very good job explaining away a common complaint that Elvis appropriated African American music and culture.
He was poor and from the ghetto, mixed neighborhood. Almost tried to paint him as a civil rights leader.
Eminem does a brief rap in the ending credits.
I don't know how historically accurate it's and I don't want to spend the time to find out but I found it visually stunning
and entertaining.

My turn to choose what to watch last night and the wife had never seen Road House. Such delicious cheese and a fun take on the classic "gunslinger rolls in to clean up the town" western trope complete with the shakedown, the old-timer who gets killed (apparently "Time Machine Sam Elliott" is now on the wife's "Free Pass" list) and the big shoot-out at the end. Never bought Swayze as an action star (his girly, dancer's frame was always better suited for rom-coms and "handsome prince" roles) and he's kinda miscast for this but it totally still works. Movie's super simple and the 80s cheese almost makes it better.

Road House is so great, I saw it for the first time late in life. When I was growing up, my first real exposure to Swayze was Ghost and that really turned me off on his movies. Anything with Sam Elliot is just fine with me too.

Checked this out on Amazon Prime instead of Ring of Power. I think I made the right choice. Very subtle superhero movie with Stallone. It opens with all the obvious tropes as the background for Samaritan, but cuts to an aged Stallone. The movie takes on the struggles of an inner city kid getting wrapped up in the obvious bad choices that come with that environment. All of that is pretty standard, but the last 1/4 of the movie is really fun.

An exercise in wasting literal minutes of film, hardly any acting from Get Out dude, an extremely annoying little sister.

My daughter and I saw Spider Man-No Way Home: More Fun Stuff version. Was a fun watch. Hearing De La Soul’s ‘3 is the magic number’ that loud, on such a killer sound system, was sweet.

I wouldn't go that far but I do kind of feel like he's becoming the black version of M. Night who was also strong out the gate but quickly fell off and is basically a joke at this point.

I hope I'm wrong though.

Terrifier- While I appreciate the throwback to pure exploitation and it wasn't pretentious or trying to shock with some stupid gimmick it just didn't work for me. There's nothing to it, just a creepy clown and (a lot of awesome) gore. They killed the only likable character too early and without at least some backstory or motivation the clown is not an effective horror villain. The unstoppable demented killing machine doing clown stuff just comes off as corny and lazy. The angle that having no backstory makes the character more threatening/interesting is a cop-out. Making him invincible was the cherry of stupidity on top.

I actually just skimmed through it hoping there might be something I was missing that would explain why people are so drawn to the character. There was not. It was terrible, like a really lazy and shitty VHS knockoff. I know it's the directors previous short films turned into an "anthology" but nah. Art does absolutely nothing for me as, in fact he comes off as goofy in a bad way, it doesn't help that they have him doing so many things that are un-homicdal clown like, like driving, texting and using a gun. People seem to love him but I just don't think he works.

No Time to Die- Christ what an absolute mess. Overly long (to say the least), needlessly convoluted for what is not a very complicated plot and most of all empty feeling. The blonde chick was awful, her and Craig had zero chemistry, which was only made more apparent by the unbelievably hot and likable Cuban chick.The whole thing with the daughter was beyond stupid and lazily manipulative. I really enjoy Casino Royale, most of Skyfall and even parts of Spectre. I think Craig is a great Bond when the material is good but this was just all around a bad sendoff for his arc.

It is weird and probably a (not good) sign of things to come. It would make sense if it was from a film history perspective, say a collection of old shorts or something like Fantasia. I don't know, I'm sure it boils down to $$$. If Disney re-releases Wall-E nobody cares but Criterion doing it definitely generates more buzz and I'm sure it will get a wide release and be in Walmart, BB etc. unlike normal Criterion stuff.

At least it should have excellent special features.

Ninja III: The Domination- Aerobics, ninjas, James Hong, Sho Kosugi, demonic possession, terrible 80s pop music... this has it all. One of the better Canon movies and a bit more fun than their usual macho fare.

80s as fuck.

Anyone watch Wrath of Man, right now it’s on Amazon?

Guy Ritchie and Jason Statham. It was not the feel good zany action and/or fun revenge movie I wanted it to be.

It’s pretty fucking dark overall. Almost an anti-action film/holy shit I dont want to be within 1000 feet of organized crime.

Movie wasn’t great overall but I didn’t hate it. Not sure how to feel about it.

Bored on a Sunday so I finally got around to Moneyball, the story of Billy Beane and the analytics revolution in baseball. I always avoided it because I don't give a shit about baseball but I know it won a bunch of awards and is written by Aaron Sorkin so I figured I'd get around to it one day. Unsurprisingly it's well-written and has very natural dialogue. The main performances are really good for the most part (even Jonah Hill who I normally can't stand) and the whole story is really low-key to the point of almost being dull. It's kind of admirable that it has almost none of the trappings of the usual cliched sports movie save for a couple of montages and there's shockingly little baseball footage (and what is there is a weird mix of shot footage of actors and archival footage of the actual players). Chris Pratt before he hit it big too which is always odd.

Nothing particularly wrong with it and it seems like a good enough movie but it did absolutely nothing for me. Guess my instincts were right but I try to give things a chance even if it seems like it's not something I would enjoy. Can't win 'em all.

Plot is a bit predictable, especially the reveal, and the CGI at the end is terrible, but I had a lot of fun with this one,

Just watched Southern Comfort. God bless HD uploaded movies on youtube. I liked this movie more than Deliverance, I'm surprised I haven't seen this movie talked more often. The suspense and paranoia at the end was fantastic.
