Rage & Honor - martial arts film with Cynthia Rothrock and Richard Norton, who team up to stop a drug dealer who is trying to frame Norton for murder.

The plot, as you might expect from this type of film, is pretty convoluted, but has an interesting twist in it. Rothrock and Norton make a great onscreen partnership, proven from China O'Brien, and there's a decent supporting cast in Catherine "Daisy Duke" Bach as Norton's boss (although she's a little underused), and Brian Thompson as the villain. Definitely a cut above a lot of the dreck that Rothrock and Norton found themselves in during the early - mid-90s.

If you ever wanted to see Brian Thompson sport a mullet so glorious it would make Michael Bolton jealous, then this is the film for you.

Dust Devil- A South African horror/western/supernatural thriller directed by Richard Stanley. Truly an unusual movie. The mix of genres doesn’t quite work but I have to admire the originality. Absolutely stunning looking, very surreal and dreamlike with some incredible scenery. It was filmed on location in the Namibian desert.

The acting is pretty bad though and the dialogue is awkward. It’s definitely more of a vibes type movie than a traditional narrative. Very heavy on African folklore and abstract supernatural stuff.

It’s about a woman who is fleeing her dysfunctional marriage and while traveling through the desert she meets a mysterious drifter with otherworldly powers. The drifter is being pursued by a cop who believes he is a serial killer. Which he is but he’s not human and the killings are part of an ancient ritual.

Definitely worth checking out if you’re looking for something different.

You pick up the recent Kino 4K for that?

Loved Hardware, shame that doesn't look like it's getting a NA 4K release anytime soon.

Normal - Replacement temporary sheriff Ulysses (?) rolls into a modern-day small town after the old sheriff dies and immediately notices that there's something off about the aptly-named Normal, Minnesota. After a bank heist goes completely sideways, the town's secrets spill out and the sheriff finds himself fighting for his life. Gun violence and over-the-top goofy deaths for one and all.

Bob Oedenkirk has apparently officially fallen into the action movie rabbit hole. Now that he did two Wick-a-likes, I guess it's time to do a small town under siege movie. The first half of the movie is a lot of fun as Oedenkirk meets all of the weirdos of the town, does small-town police work and tries to figure out what seems off about this quirky place. The second is a totally serviceable action-comedy with some pretty grizzly violence in places but it's missing a couple of key elements that make for a truly great action movie. First, there's no real sidekick to bounce the comedy off of. He starts off with a dufus cop who looks like he'll be the Nick Frost to his Simon Pegg in Hot Fuzz but that goes sideways for plot-related reasons. Then there's the pair of bank robbers who they set up as his sidekicks but then they straight up disappear from the movie with 30 minutes left and then there's the former sheriff's daughter (?) that the movie forgets about and then brings back for the third act but, at that point, she feels completely tacked on. It's a strange story choice in a movie that makes several strange choices and I don't think it really comes together in the end.

Spoiler:
The movie is basically Hot Fuzz by way of Fargo (new guy slowly realizes the town he's in is killing people to protect a dark secret and ends up having to take on the entire town... with crazy, sometimes over-the-top violence). The difference, of course, is that this town is full of weird, quirky Midwesterners instead of weird, quirky small-town Brits. But yeah, it's basically three movies: sheriff arrives to town and tries to fit in but thinks something is fishy, the town reveals itself as a giant front for the yakuza (who's stashing their illegal contraband in the local bank in return for a small piece of the action to keep the dying town afloat) and tries to kill the sheriff and the bank robbers who accidentally revealed their secret and, finally, the town and the sheriff unite to take on the yakuza who've come back for their shit. While all three parts of the movie have funny moments and Bob Oedenkirk is pretty great throughout, they're also wildly different in tone and style to the point of being off-putting.

Intent To Kill - I was interested in watching this because 1) Tracy Lords, and 2) it was the first non-porno to get a NC-17 rating.

Plot is wafer thin - a cop (Lords) pursues a psychopathic drug dealer while dealing with her cheating boyfriend. Yeah, you really don't need to concentrate too hard with this one.

It's pretty well made for what it is though, the way the film is put together is a bit patchy - there's a number of scenes that just feel like filler - but the acting is surprisingly good, and there's plenty of action. The only known actors are Lords, and in a supporting role, Yaphet Kotto - who certainly elevates this flick, and fortunately has a lot more to do than in the lacklustre Hangfire, which I watched recently.

No idea why this got an NC-17 - yes, there's plenty of violence, but it's hardly going into Robocop territory, and there is no nudity. Still, oddly entertaining in a so bad its good kind of way.

If you've ever wanted to see a scantily clad Tracy Lords get thrown out of a speeding limo only to get up without a scratch and start shooting at the bad guys, then this is the film for you.

Krull - Taiso watched this back in December, and his review shocked me how much he disliked it. So this came up a few days ago and I watched it for the first time in 6-ish years, and I still love it. Everything Taiso hated, I loved. His one positive for the film was something like, 'every frame is a portrait' which I agree with immensely. It looks so beautiful there were times I'd pause to just admire the scenery or the incredible background matte paintings.

It's about 2 hours long but never seems to drag - the scenes I liked as a kid are still cool to me now. Can we get my man Rell the Cyclops a dab? His sacrifice had an impact on me as a kid. Now I view it even greater as a man defying fate and going out on his own terms. There's also a very quick line, "And you Rell, what would you wish for?" "Ignorance." Such a cool character.

Any plot hole or laziness in storytelling, i.e. the black fortress teleporting a thousand miles away and then being told the only way to get there would be by 'firemare' (horses that run so fast they leave a trail of fire!) and then having a herd of firemares immediately show up, doesn't bother me at all. It's a simple story of good against evil, that I now see copied Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, but is done so well I can't help but smile throughout. And The Beast is still fucking terrifying. I also give Taiso a dab for reminding me this movie exists.

The Running Man (2025)- While this isn’t as bad as the Robocop and Total Recall remakes it’s still not great. Edgar Wright’s direction is fine, it‘s stylish and tight with creative camera work and editing, The cast is solid and even the soundtrack is good. The problems are the story and the length. It’s just not a very engaging movie and the more it tries the less it works. It also has pacing problems due to the length.

I also found the action to be underwhelming. The original made the fights with the hunters all memorable. This movie has none of that type of action, it just a long chase with a couple big set pieces.

The world building is pretty good and depressingly realistic but it spends way too much time hammering the same social commentary points over and over.

It’s worth a lazy afternoon watch but it’s not something you’ll likely remember the next day, unlike the original.

Three Men and a Baby - pretty certain I don't have to give a synopsis of the plot for this one.

Still very amusing, mainly due to the great chemistry between the three leads. It's showing it's age a little with some of the social attitudes (it's very 80s in places), but if you're normal and can accept that things change, it's still a good watch.

Looking forward to the 21st Century remake - Three Trannies and a Non-Binary.

If you've ever wanted to see Steve Guttenberg hide heroin in a diaper, then this is the movie for you.

I turned it off about 30 minutes in, I dont remember much other than just thinking "why did she ask me to download this..."

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

My personal favorite of the series, though much like my preference for Jedi, I agree that Empire is the best of the OG trilogy, just like Raiders of the Lost Ark is the best of the trilogy. I just like these as my favorites.

What a great adventure. I remember I went to see this at the movies and was in awe the entire time. I didn't like Temple of Doom at the time but I absolutely loved Last Crusade. Connery and Ford playing off each other which honestly does feel like a real father & son relationship/interaction is magical. "You didn't bring the diary with you, did you? I should have sent it to the Marx brothers..."

Great stuff. One of my favorite scenes is when Indy is telling the germans that Marcus Brody knows a dozen languages and customs, has friends everywhere and will blend in, disappear and likely find the Grail before they did and its smash cuts to Brody in a crowd asking if anyone speaks english or ancient greek lol.

I've probably watched this movie 500 times in my life. As a kid, during one summer when I was at my grandparents place, they had an HBO recording of it on a VHS and I watched that probably every day I was there.
Yeah, same. I know people dunk on Last Crusade now, but it's still fun to me, dammit! The opening is especially criticized for giving Indy so many of his signature traits, but IDGAF.

I really like the idea of the guy who went against Indy for the Cross of Coronado. You lost today, kid, but that doesn't mean you have to like it. And then Indy grew up and copped the guy's style, which Spielberg said was a kind of subconscious rebellion against his father. That's such a cool idea, wonder if it's a trope. Shit HornheaDD, I know what I'm watching next time I'm a few liters in.

The Running Man- Wanted to revisit the OG after watching the remake. A total schlock fest, everything about it is goofy as hell and it’s all the more enjoyable because of it. A total product of its time, again all the better for it. The fights are all memorable, all the in studio stuff is fun and having Richard Dawson as Killian is great. Plus Arnold in his prime even if the dialogue and acting are awkward still brings that presence. Honestly it’s got a hell of a cast. I just wish he actually got to fight Jesse Ventura.

Absolutely terrible one liners though, like I can’t believe they made it into the final script. Also Maria Conchita Alonso definitely hid that tape in her pussy.

Project Hail Mary - Man wakes up from a coma in space alone and slowly realizes he was sent on a one-way mission to the deep recesses of space to help solve a mystery that will save Earth. He picks up a sidekick along the way who assists him and the movies flashes back occasionally to tell the story of how he ended up becoming an unlikely astronaut.

Famously written by the same guy who wrote The Martian and it has a very similar tone and style: smart, science-y white guy with a self-deprecating sense of humor is stranded in space and makes the best of it by science-ing the shit out of stuff to save the day. Never read the book so I can't speak to quality of the conversion of the material but Gosling largely kills it doing 80+% of the movie by himself against a greenscreen and his "friend" that he makes is fun and cute without being cloying. It hits some familiar tropes and pushes buttons in ways that are familiar to anyone who's watched "man and his alien friend" movies but Gosling definitely makes it work on sheer charisma. It honestly reminds me a lot of the less cynical space movies of the 80s.

Street Knight - Jeff Speakman's follow-up to The Perfect Weapon, which also happened to be one of the last ever films out of the Cannon stable.

Speakman is an ex-cop trying to keep the peace between two rival gangs who are being played off each other by a gang of ex-cops.

Decent action thriller, not quite as good as The Perfect Weapon, but a solid second outing for Jeff, and well worth a watch for genre fans. Such a shame Speakman never found more success, as his martial arts style is great, and he can actually act, which is more than you can say about some of the other martial arts B-movie actors of the late 80s / early 90s.

If you've ever wanted to see Jeff Speakman put a gun in a guy's mouth and then shoot the guy behind that guy, then this is the film for you.

The Rocketeer

I'd never seen this. Heard/knew about it, played the NES game (never played the SNES game), knew it was popular, but I just never got around to watching it. Watched it this eve with the wife and it was a fun movie.

Granted being spoiled for the last 30+ years when it comes to effects, I was like "that looks hokey" but I can totally see it being mindblowing when it originally came out. Either way, Timothy Dalton chewing up screen time (as he should) and the absolute gobsmacking loveliness of Jennifer Connelly in her 90s prime. SHE-YITT. So pretty.

Always good seeing Alan Arkin (I seriously had to correct myself after typing "alda" here a second ago lol) in whatever he appears in. Cool flick. Shame I hadn't watched it at the movies as a kid, I'd have loved it then too.

UFOria- This is an interesting one. A comedy/drama made in 1981 but shelved till 85. It stars Fred Ward, Harry Dean Stanton and Cindy Williams. Ward plays wandering grifter who partners up with Stanton, a scummy tent preacher. Ward seduces a religious local grocery cashier (Williams) who sees a UFO and believes it’s the second coming of Jesus. Ward and Stanton then Involve her in their latest con.

This is more a comedy in line with something like Raising Arizona, Northern Exposure or the lighter parts of Twin Peaks. Where the characters and their interactions are all believably quirky and have a strange charm. More a painting of offbeat Americana than a structured comedy or drama. The acting is all excellent from the 3 main leads and the random characters they meet are all entertaining.

I’d definitely recommend it if you’re a fan of quirky lowkey comedies.

The Human Shield - action thriller with Michael Dudikoff as a special forces trainer who goes behind enemy lines to rescue his brother from a psychopathic Iragi general on the eve of the first Gulf War.

Middle of the road fare from Cannon. The cast and crew do the best they can with the limited budget, and at just under 90 minutes the film moves along nicely enough to keep you engaged. However, could have done with a bit more of that over-the-top action that Cannon were famous for.

Directed by Ted Post, who also did Magnum Force (first sequel to Dirty Harry), and does a good job here, but his many years of TV directing come through in a few scenes.

Not Dudi's finest hour, but certainly not his worst either.

If you've ever wanted to see Michael Dudikoff single handedly destroy an Iraqi chemical weapons factory, then this is the film for you.

The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender

Its a movie sequel to the original Avatar (animated) show, and a prequel to the Legend of Korra series. So I guess an 'interquel' or whatever. It takes place after Aang is an adult and the characters have all moved on to be adults Im assuming in their 20s.

None of the same voice actors return, probably because the kid who played Aang is likely in his 30s now or something, but it had a good cast, Ken Jeong as the cabbage cart guy, Stephen Yeun as Zuko, François Chau as Gyatso in a bit part, Ke Huy Qwan and even Taika Waititi show up here and there.

It honestly felt like a continuation of the show's lore, though Im not sure if it counts the two comic series that came after the show as canon, because there's no mention of the events therein that Im aware of. You could tell it went into 3D animation at some points for the characters, but it wasn't super jarring. Easy to get past, but its there.

The main villain is pretty much telegraphed as soon as you meet them which is to be expected. What show/movie introduces a new character and it doesn't end up being a villain? (unless they leave and die on the way to their home planet, a la Poochie) Otherwise its not a bad flick. Lots of the same humor, anime-esque influence like the original show, and almost as much heart as the original show. Even Momo got a cool little scene. A nice ending even though it might contradict the second Korra series, but honestly I dont know if they count Korra as part of the story anymore. Whats neat is even with different voice actors, all of the 4 main character personalities come through as if it were the next episode in the series.

Night of the Running Man - thriller with John Glen's hitman for hire chasing down Andrew McCarthy who finds himself in possession of a million dollars of mob casino money. Not too dissimilar in plotting to "No Country For Old Men".

This is a surprisingly solid film, good pacing, tension, and good acting from the principal cast - which also features, the always charismatic, John Glover, and the smoking hot Janet Gunn. John Glen is awesome as the sadistic hitman, and McCarthy is very likable as the down-on-his-luck cabbie trying to make a better life for himself.

Directed by Mark L. Lester, this is a great little thriller, whose 90 minute run time flies by.

If you've ever wanted to see John Glenn fuck some woman's brains out, only to then snap her neck rather viciously during the post coital pillow talk, then this is the film for you.

I still like this movie as well. Jennifer Connelly is a classic beauty in it, just timeless grace and presence.

The score by James Horner is one of his best, IMO. Right up there with his work on Aliens, Willow and Glory. His score for Krull is good but not up to par with those others.

The film Krull is ass tho.

Yeah, The Rocketeer is awesome and everyone who likes the movie should at least check out Dave Stevens comic. Even if it’s just to glance at his art.

Huh, the 90s were on a roll with that kind of movie - Dick Tracy, The Rocketeer, The Shadow, The Phantom...am I missing any? Loved them all as a kid.

Firepower - what happens when you take a pinch of Escape From New York, a soupcon of Shootfighter, and a hint of The Omega Man... you get Firepower.

This is basically a no rules cage fighting film with some sci-fi elements thrown in to make the plot slightly more convoluted; starring Chad McQueen and Gary Daniels. It's quite entertaining, despite its low budget, although McQueen looks seriously out of shape compared to Daniels and really looks like he should get his ass kicked in places.

Still, worth a watch if you're looking for something to switch off to for 90 minutes.

If you've ever wanted to see Ultimate Warrior cut someone's head off with a katana, then this is the film for you.

Shootfighter 2 - yes the sequel that no one ever remembers asking for to a film that has long been since forgotten about.

Bolo Yeung and William Zabka return from the original, this time to take down an illegal shootfighting tournament in Miami run by Bolo's estranged brother.

The plot is wafer thin nonsense, but the fights are really well executed, and come thick and fast to keep the viewer entertained.

It doesn't have the brutality of the first Shootfighter, but it's still a decent sequel, which in B-movie land is pretty rare.

If you've ever wanted to see a short, stocky, Chinese guy violently head butt a white guy to death, then this is the film for you.
