Al McCoy, the radio voice of the Phoenix Suns for more than a half-century, has died at 91

PHOENIX (AP) — Al McCoy, who was the radio voice of the Phoenix Suns for more than a half-century, has died. He was 91.

The team made the announcement on Saturday and released a statement from his family. No cause of death was disclosed.

McCoy was the longest-tenured team broadcaster in NBA history, calling Suns games for 51 years. He called his first game on his Sept. 27, 1972 and his last on May 11, 2023. His tenure included Phoenix's NBA Finals appearances in 1976, 1993 and 2021.

“This is a sad day for the Suns and the Suns family," former Suns star Charles Barkley said in a statement. "Al McCoy represented everything that is great about Phoenix, the Phoenix Suns and people who love basketball. I was blessed and honored to work with Al and I’m gonna miss him.”

McCoy is a member of the franchise's Ring of Honor and a 2009 inductee into the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame. He also earned the Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007.

“Al McCoy was a master of his craft,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. “As the longest-tenured team broadcaster in NBA history, he set a high standard throughout his 51 seasons calling Phoenix Suns basketball. He entertained generations of fans with his distinct delivery and unbridled love for the game and was a beloved friend to so many of us in the NBA community. I send my heartfelt condolences to Al's family and friends and the entire Suns organization.”

McCoy was born in 1933 in Williams, Iowa, and got his first radio job in 1951 in Webster City, Iowa, when he was a freshman at Drake. He moved to Arizona in 1956 as the play-by-play announced for the Triple-A Phoenix Giants baseball team. During his tenure with the Suns, he became known for his catchphrases such as “Shazam,” “Zing Go the Strings” and “Heartbreak Hotel.”

“I had the privilege of Al McCoy narrating the first eight years of my career," Suns star Devin Booker said. "He was inducted into the Ring of Honor my second season, and it was then I really understood what a special talent he was. And over the course of my career, I’ve learned what an even more special person he was.

"We will miss Al, and I am so glad our legacies in Phoenix are forever connected.”

Fuck Embiid. Mitchell Robinson is out till December or January. Whatever the Knicks do now, please don't trade Deuce.
Knicks will make the playoffs even without a center.

Al McCoy's passing is such a damn shame. He gave so much to the team over so many decades, and it hurts my sports soul to the core that he never got to see the team win a ring.

They better get working on a big statue for him ASAP.

Gonna be a rough year for Nuggets. That was a bonkers extension for Jamal, dude can't stay healthy but I guess I get that he's Nikola's security blanket. Porter sucks. Watson or Braun as the new starter will be rough, neither is anywhere near KCP quality. Zero depth, Strawther and Watson/Braun and Westbrook off the bench does not make me optimistic.

Bold/bad predictions - Westbrook will be the second-leading scorer, team will get 5 seed in the playoffs and lose in the first round.

Salary cap not a lot of fun.

Just the idea that you mentioned Watson as a potential starting SG just shows you don't know shit about basketball. Holy hell, man.

Chicago would have won a chip , fucking bad coaching to leave him in there with double digit lead and min left in a playoff game.
It was gonna happen eventually. If he was that close to suffering that severe of an injury, it was inevitable.

I loved that Bulls team so much. They were almost there. Rose going down was a heartbreaker.

Over in the WNBA, Aja Wilson won another MVP with unanimous votes. Only the second time that's happened in the league. She's also the first player to score more than 1,000 points in a season.

The Aces are up against the Liberty in a Finals rematch from last year. Whoever wins that is a safe bet to win it all. Hoping for an Aces 3-peat!

Honestly don't think I hate Towns leaving the Wolves. Butler was right. Soft as fuck dude
You need Towns' spacing if you're going to play Gobert.

Randle and Reid could work, but Randle and Gobert is going to be an awkward disaster.

Ok, we'll see. I don't know why everyone disrespects Gobert, let's let it play out.

It's not disrespecting him to understand how he plays. The reason he was (eventually, after a lot of adjustment) able to play next to Towns is because Towns is a consistent three point threat who drew big defenders outside and opened up space for Gobert to work. Gobert and Randle together are just going to clog the lane.

I was shocked but the Knicks are better now. Losing Donte sucks hard but Randle for KAT doesn't when I think about it.

You realize that Towns missed about half the season and Gobert did just fine. Bad take, dude. Have fun with Westbrook.

Jesus Christ man, you really can't read or comprehend anything at all.

When Towns was out he played next to Reid, who is also a great three point shooter. But they traded for Randle, and Randle is going to play. So unless they bench Gobert with Randle on the court they're going to get a ton of minutes together.

You dumb. Transitive property.

Randle and Reid can work. Reid and Gobert worked. Therefore, Randle and Gobert will work. Idiot.
