I remember a quote that went something like, "World Heroes Perfect is far from perfect." If anyone can find it (would probably be EGM, GamePro or Diehard Game Fan) I need it in like 40 years when I make a video.
Actually, I'm a huge dork and got the EGM anthology thing from Kickstarter. The book hasn't been released yet, but the digital archive has been. If you know the issue I can look it up for you. Lmk.

Thanks. I don't know the issue. Must have been around May-June 1995, the World Heroes Perfect release.

It's odd how the sentiment for the Neo Geo in North American magazines was back in the day, whereas in Europe reviewers were more receptive towards the platform. Not all the time but the mayority gave favorable commentary to even the later Neo Geo releases.

As @kernow already stated, early reviews in UK magazines were not favorable.

Next Generation…what big headed fucks they were. They thought they were so great just because they had English degrees…they had an absolute hard on for anything they considered progress and “progress” to them meant the clunky blocky bad 3D games at the time. They loved Tomb Raider 1 for example and wouldn’t touch something like Real Bout Special.

The term “next generation” was perfect because was never about what you’re actually playing. It’s a stance, a pose, about being on the right side of history by graduating from the fun stuff you grew up with and suffering through polygon hell. They loved the N64, Nintendo’s worst console, because it was the most high tech.

They didn’t like the Neo. They would much sooner recommend you a CDi or a 3DO or even a Jag because those people are blazing the shitty trail to good games which will exist some day. 2D in the other hand was to be absolutely loathed until it eventually went away forever…which it never did, obviously, since 2D shit is still all over the place 30 years later. Pokeman had yet to sell nearly 50 million copies of black and white 8-bit Gameboy carts when Next Gen was preaching all this to us. They looked so much more grown up than EGM or Gamefan but they were a bunch of dipshits who were wrong about everything.

Most neo reviews in magazines like cvg etc got 45-65% at most
For the Brit press, everything that wasn't Amiga or ST related was crap unless it was a Nintendo game...
