This particular model has been on Amazon since last year. The other ones seem to be out of stock usually.

I've been kicking around getting a 4K player, to ease up off the PS5 (you know, now that the damn things are $650 for a disc model).

Sifting through the rubble of what's left of players (Sony, Panasonic, Magnetar), there's really not much to go over.

Sony players seem to be highly problematic, prone to skipping/freezing on many 4K discs, and require toy to manually tell the player what kind of output you want (HDR, vs Dolby Vision). Magentar...well, I'm not looking to drop pushing $2K on a UDP800. So...that left me with Panasonic, specifically the UB420, the 450, or the 820.

I was fairly dead set on the 820...although getting them can be spotty. The $550 price was also slightly off putting, given that there's plenty of reviews out there concerning the players being slightly fragile, and prone to eventually having massive function problems.

That got me looking at either the 420 ($299), or the 450 ($200). The prices seem to vary, depending on where you look. The info on these two players aren't very clear, but here's what I found:

420- Better 1080 BR upscaling, HDR, HDR10+
450- Not as good at upscaling, HDR, Dolby Vision

Given my LG OLED has DV, and not HDR10+, I ran with the 450 (got it from Wal Mart, of all places, and saved $100 over the 420). I got it home, hooked it up, and ran it through its paces. Its a criminally cheap piece of gear...but that was to be expected. I'll say that with 1080 BRs, it seems my PS5 does a better job of upscaling. There's an ton of reasons why that could be, given the ocean of different settings that all of the unique devices have. With the limited time that I had, that was the outcome.

4K discs do look better on the Panasonic vs the PS5. I watched The Matrix in DV, and ran a BD100 disc (Blade Runner 2049). Both played flawlessly, looked amazing, and had no issues. The Matrix was exceptionally impressive.

I guess for now, I'll just run the PS5 for 1080 BRs, until I have more time to screw with the setting on the Panasonic. Either way, given the super cheap price, I think the performance is solid. We'll see how long the player lasts.

Bravia 7 II and Bravia 9 II, the last of the line as far as stand-alone Japanese OEM TV manufacturers.

We’ve come full circle with these sets-RGB led panels; each single LED has a R, a G, or a B. CRT approach on a flat panel.

Who’s got ~70Gs for the 115”?
