I think the Abrams movie casting was great overall. No one was flagrantly miscast, and they all do great in their roles, either as direct homages or their own thing. Urban's Bones is fantastic, but I do think he overdoes the grumpy attitude. Kelley played him much more naturally with more humor and light-heartedness when appropriate.
SNW has also done a great job, though Paul Wesley as Kirk still makes my brain hurt with the age/appearance disconnect. Ethan Peck is so damn good as Spock that it feels like Nimoy took over his body and is still there playing the role. Very keen to see what Jane does as Bones. The other guy playing Sulu is a newbie so we'll just have to wait and see.
Also really hoping they green light Year One and continue from there. Would be a damn shame to strike all those amazing sets and just end it with SNW S5, leaving us only with Academy. I'd love to see both new stories and TOS ones re-imaged like they did with SNW's S1 finale.
SNW reminds me of the Abrams movies more than any of the other new series. I like it but I don’t think I will ever be inclined to rewatch it. None of the characters are that memorable to me. There is a potential to go deeper into their backstories and it just doesn’t go there enough to make them interesting. They kind of all have bland personalities, which I know this isn’t the thing now a days but there are some women on there that have/ could have sex appeal or at least be more interesting because of it. There was a lot of filler in this past season as well.
