Kernow makes an excellent point. While NHL 94 seems to be the game most people look back on with nostalgic glasses, it's NHL 96 that was truly the pinnacle of the series. Revamped game engine that's faster and more dynamic, and they finally returned the fighting and "head bleed" injuries that were removed after NHLPA 93. But beyond that, it's the little touches that take it beyond the good game level to classic. Such as the multitude of organ songs, new crowd noises, players getting angry and slamming their sticks when getting taken to the penalty box, and the squeaky hinge of the door opening and closing behind them. NHL 96 is more than just excellent gameplay, it's chock full of character.
