As this news broke, a friend (that also happens to be deeply involved with some social media based Neo page… which one I neither know nor give a shit about) couldn’t help but share his community’s excitement with me.
To which I responded:
“Who the fuck is this system for exactly?”
After a few hours if occurred to me it’s either:
A: an old school ride-or-die Neo/SNK loyalist that came up with the system from its inception, and either currently owns an AES/MVS/or some other derivative, or you had your fun and had enough sense to get the fuck out before getting further sucked into the black hole.
…Yet is somehow willing to blindly shell out ANOTHER $250-$1000 for whats effectively the same tech their user base gave up on in the first place? Like the Neo X or Neo Mini they already own(ed)? Every ten years comes another re-release with the same software ad nauseam.
However, if in the same breath SNK announced they’d be supporting their built in users by producing new period specific (ie: 1993-97’ era) software thats compatible with both systems, cool. I’d get behind that. I imagine most of the members here would have no issue dropping $75-$100 once a quarter for a new Neo game either. (Hell, back in 2003 it was $300) MOTW 2? Baseball Stars 3?? Magician Lord 2? “Insert most wanted game here”?? Whatever. I’m down. Atleast i’d feel like theres a mutual benefit. We continue to support SNK’s legitimate releases/we get cool new shit to play. Otherwise, no deal. Without new software what the fuck is even the point?
That doesn’t seem to be the case though.
B: You’re a 45-year old neckbeard FOMO fucktard thats simply in the retro gaming “scene” for the speculation market. If it was “about the games” you could find countless other means of getting your Neo fix without plunking down money for the same 35+ year old piece of tech SNK has been retreading for years. Come November you’ll flip this bitch on ebay as the next collector’s item gaga bullshit and hope some other asshole with more money than sense will squander his savings as well.
Obviously this is the audience SNK is after.
You don’t need a marketing degree to see that any ebay listing with the letters “AES” in them will bring up countless pages of overpriced dreck. Hell it was their shit to begin with. Why not get back a piece of that retro gamer market they created in the first place?
This release isn’t meant to quell the market and/or make it more accessible. It’s purely opportunistic.
And why we’re at it, don’t you worry about the collector’s market bottoming out my French friends! Whether it’s video games, comic books, or fucking Air Jordans, history has proven that regardless of re-release, originals will always hold their value. As much as i’d love to cherry pick some carts I missed out on back in the day, that shit won’t be coming down any time soon. Don’t think we’ll being seeing new copies of SVC Chaos et al.
And Finally:
C: The still wet behind the ears Neo newbie that can finally *FINALLY* purchase legit hardware for the “true” at home Neo experience…
And if you’re one of the few that unironically find yourself in the latter category, then CONGRATURATIONS! Welcome to the overpriced world of Neo Geo home cart butt-fuckery!
Regardless, a word of sage advice; save your money. Open an IRA. take a couple classes at the local community college. Go on that trip you always wanted. Whatever you do, don’t drop a THOUSAND FUCKING DOLLARS on a 35 year old video game system and a handful of games.
I’ve often said i’ll never tell a sucker how to spend their money… but I honestly can’t think of a way to end that sentence.
Fucking Christ.
