If you’re old enough to remember how awesome River City Ransom was on the original NES, then you’ll certainly be glad to know that a sequel, while rather late, is apparently in the works.

Developer Miracle Kidz, which is based in Japan and features a few of the series’ original devs, recently stated to Siliconera that a sequel to the 1990 brawler is currently in development for both PC and consoles. While specific console platforms weren’t mentioned, Miracle Kidz currently has Downtown Smash Dodgeball available on the XBL Indie Games channel with a WiiWare port en route, making a River City Ransom 2 appearance on the 360 and Wii a likely scenario. The game is expected to hit consoles this summer with the PC version coming sometime next year.

Who here remembers playing the original? What would you hope to see in a sequel? Battle it out in the comments until somebody BARFS!

I demand a PSN release

I with they would just port over Shodai Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun and Shin Nekketsu Kōha: Kunio-tachi no Banka.

By context I know these must be good games. But now I have to google them.

WTF...why in the name of fuck would it NOT see a PSN release?

I swear to Gold almighty...being quite possibly my favorite NES game of all time, if they make a new 2D title and fuck-stick PSN owners out of it...well, I'm just going to crack.

They were the Super Famicom sequels that spawned off after the Famicom/NES Downtown Nekettsu/River City Ransom game.

I didn't mean to come off as one of those guys that call their Blast City cabs Burastoshitti. Those games didn't make it over to the states and were only available in Japanese (game finally translated to English). The story for the first release has a similar story as Kenka Bancho:Badass Rumble.

Here's my wish list.

REALLY GOOD Online Play
More then two players
Keep it 8 Bit
Get a Chiptunes Band to do the music
Keep it 2D
Don't give it too many buttons. Attack, Jump, Special (No more then four)
Vs Mode!

Cool. Curious about the art style though.

Personally, while I LOVE 2D beat em ups...it's about damn time someone made a GREAT 3D beat em up.

I mean...why hasn't it been done? Watchmen was such a bummer, it could have been great.

What about Downtown Special - Kunio-kun no Jidaigeki Dayo Zenin Shuugou! - it kind of predates both of the SNES sequels.

Yeah...but last I checked, their $$ is just as green as anyone else's...if I was a developer, that would be my deciding factor.

But you should be used to this by now. The 360/Live is obviously the choice for most developers to release stuff like this for some concrete reason, weather it's cost of development or whatever.

Maybe they have to specially program it so it will take 5 hours to download/install and they can't be bothered.

That game deals with Kunio in feudal Japan.

You're going to hate the upcoming year....

360 games and 360 Arcade (XNA) games use the same dev kit as the new "XBL On Windows Phone" thing as well as Games for Windows Live.

PS3's Arcade dev kit.. works on uh... well, nothing other than PS3.... yet. Not to mention it's notoriously more difficult to use than Microsoft's junk.

Publishers are definitely going to be pushing for the 3-in-1 platform.

Not sure if people here are aware of the last few Arksys releases on DS, but here goes:

Super Dodge Ball - May 2008 : 2D remake of the NES Dodgeball game, with extra moves and backgrounds

River City Soccer Hooligans - May 2010 : 3D Remake of the second soccer game on Famicom

River City Sports Challenge - August 2010 : 3D remake of Crash'n the Boys and its sequel (which was only released in Japan).

You can find pics of the latest Dodge Ball game by the newly formed "Miracle Kids" here
