So last year it became obvious my cholesterol was way off. After some dieting and taking pills it didn’t go down. So the doctor recommended me doing some sports(Whoa what!). Never been a big fan of group sports but after my wife found a skate class for older men, I’ve been hooked. It is pretty fun to do , gives you a work out and you learn something new each week.
Even organised the team building from
Work there. And know my six year old son is joining me on Saturday. He is already infinitely better then me naturally.

Still look like an absolute retard on the board but I’m having fun hopefully the cholesterol will go down.

Anybody else into skating present or past?

Does ice skating count in your world?
I used to do that but a messed up ankle always kept me at novice level and eventually just had to stop.

I was a BMX guy. My knees are gone since my mid 20s.
Had a knee op, that seems to have done fuck all, about 6 months ago.

There seems to be a toss up in life between fucking your joints or letting your heart deep fry.

Anyway, have fun Smokey, see you in the injuries thread.

I mean for me everything is OK. I did a lot of iceskating when I was young, it was a cheap and fun activity.

I got into skating back in 1985 at the tender young age of 6 just after seeing Back to the Future.

I got out of skating about a week later when my brother tore up his arm going down a neighbors hilly driveway and my mom threw away the boards.

Man if I had stuck with it at that young age I could been the next Bam Magera…

this is why most chubby mid-aged men slap on tight shirts and get on a bicycle.
I row on my Concept 2 in VR, so no one can see me, and I can't see myself.

Yeah you'll stop once you really eat shit hard for the first time at this age.

I skated from around 11/12 through my late 20's. Last time I fell really hard I knew it was time to call it quits and just occasionally cruise, no more fucking around on stairs and ramps etc. Not worth serious injury and medical bills.

If I could skate without anyone seeing me, I'd skate again.

Go to the skatepark early in the morning, that's usually when no one is around.

Take a couple judo or jiu-jitsu classes, for real. They'll teach you how to break falls. Most gyms will let you take a trial class and that's the very first thing they'll teach you. It'll still suck when you fall but you'll be far less likely to get injured.

lol learning how to fall from a hip toss or shoulder throw is completely different from getting launched off a skateboard onto the pavement, falling on steps, a rail or a ramp. It might help a little if you happen to fall a very specific way at low speeds but 99% of the time it's not going to do shit if you eat pavement while skating.

Besides he should be more worried about fucking up an ankle or knee since I don't think he's going to be doing any advanced tricks at this age, so he's most likely to just land wrong trying to ollie or something simple like that.

Falling is falling. Gymnasts, pro wrestlers, stuntmen, judokas, dancers, they all learn the same basic breakfalls and rolls. There's no magic trick that makes you immune to injury but any sport that has falling will teach you some simple principles that will help you.

I had some bad falls while biking and skiing in my youth that would likely send me to the hospital now. I was doing a lot of MMA training back then and I think it helped. Or maybe it was just luck and age-related, who knows.

I'm not saying it can't help at all, I'm just saying physics and the human body don't like to play nice. Especially when you're an out of shape middle aged guy trying to do something like skateboard for the first time in your life.
