Hi guys I was wondering which SNES game you consider very rare? I have heard that Mario World Brutal, Starwing Competition and Donkey Kong Competition are saught after but what others, if you had the chance, would you like to lay your hands on?

I only know "normal guy" rare as opposed to Nintendo Championship kind of rare. The rarest SNES games I have are probably RPGs like Terranigma, and the English-PAL version of Soul Blazer (didn't know this was rare until Retro Gamer said so, but if RG says so...*Shrugs*). The only other game I want for SNES is Bahamut Lagoon.

Not crazy rare, but I'd add Mega Man X3 to the list.

Typically it seems a game will end up being rare based on a few conditions
1. Some quirky japanese import or just a Square title
2. It was released near the end of the console's life cycle.

Does anything in the SNES library get rarer and/or more sought after than Earthbound?

Boxed, complete w/guide book and insert?

This is also regional. The EU chases have some games that are only rare over there. It's weird shit too like Beethoven the Movie pt2.

Couple other ones:
Ninja Gaiden Trilogy
EVO
Harvest Moon
and pretty much any RPG get money.

Final Fantasy IV, V or VI fully boxed and manual +inserts will be very expensive. Also I think Star Ocean would be quite expensive. Oh, and Terranigma too.

problem is, earthbound is not a rare title.

sought after, yes. rare, no.

expensive does not equal rare.

Agreed. Think of a Link to the Past: it's not rare, but because it's such a great game everyone wants it, making it expensive. Anything that is EU/PAL exclusive is going to be quite rare.

The earthbound price is a joke, game is only ok, don't care what anyone says. I had a boxed one I bought from best buy on close out for 10 bucks, sat on the shelf for two years finally opened and played, ugh, no fun for me. Sold it off.

I recently brought Brutal Mario World. I was really chuffed to have for it. It's in mint condition with box etc. haven't played it yet but I understand that around 2000 copies were ever made.

Man I love the SNES and Neo Geo days. The games were actually challenging, graphics were really being pushed and gameplay was so important. Roll back the 90's!!!

I was never fond of EarthBound either. People get so angry when you tell them that, just like saying Ocarina of Time isn't as good as Majora's Mask or A Link to the Past.

Yeah, Earthbound, not good.

i actually liked it. kind of a fun quirky story.

even though it is very easy, super linear, and basic in terms of gameplay.

its not necessarily something i need to play all the time, but its not a bad game.

I too enjoy EarthBound. In fact, both the NES and SNES installments. I love their atmosphere, simplicity and strangeness. The SNES version has great sound design, love it... I think some people hate just to hate. If you want a hyper complicated, long and groundbreaking game, just go back to Square's games. EarthBound is expensive because of it's uniqueness and the very low odds of Nintendo bringing the series back to the US. Final Fantasy III and Chrono Trigger have been re-released many times and Square Enix hasn't tried to bury them, hence why the originals aren't that expensive.

Other than the ones you've mentioned, I don't think there are many "rare" SNES cartridges. Boxes and manuals, though? Some are a bitch to find, and to secure. Games like Super Turrican 2, Incantation, Mr. Nutz, Zero Kamikaze Squirrel and 3 Ninjas Kick Back (the box and manual can hit 4 digits, no lie). Pocky & Rocky 2 and oh yeah, Aero Fighters comes to mind as well. AF is "rare" but you can still find the cart. However, the box and manual are INSANE. The cart alone is $120+, but the box and manual put it in the 350+ range. I'm just so thankful I got 95% of my SNES shit years ago.

edit: I love Earthbound. The suburban feel and quirky sense of humor pulled me in from the start.

Badboy... sadly I had to sell my SNES collection due to redundancy a couple of years ago. Out of all my complete and boxed titles, the ones that fetched the most were:

Ninja Warriors - New Generation
Megaman 7
Final Fight 2
Final Fight 3
Super Turrican 2
Street Fighter Alpha 2
Batman & Robin

I REALLY didn't want to ever sell Ninja Warriors (adore... ADORE that game!) but luckily it sold for enough to justify the loss...

the difference is that is not a real game. it's a hack

Hacks are okay, but you have to remember that they can be reprinted indefinitely. They're never rare.
