Should be fun, for the longest time I assumed this game was trash because of the memes. Only found out later in life it was a respected Toaplan game.

Anyone have any pics of the stage 5 warp spot or can point me in the direction of a video? The images from shmups are broken in that thread and I’m curious if it’s in the us ver.

I haven’t found them all but I know Pipi is in the US ver board as I got one of em on stage 4 in the above run.

Other than the 2 player capability I don’t believe there’s any other differences but correct me if I’m wrong!

The Japanese PCB uses checkpoints, so when you die you get sent back-makes it a much more challenging game. Also, the Japanese PCB flashes the screen whenever you kill a popcorn enemy, which is rather annoying.

We should probably track the US arcade separately from the JP arcade because of the checkpoint vs respawn in place.

The flashing on the us one is bad enough, if it does it on popcorn too that’s brutal.

I'm mistaken - I thought the screen flashing was only in the JP arcade board, but it's in the US board as well. Too bad.

Someone said the autofire cuts it down dramatically. I’ve never played it without autofire so I guess I’m fortunate to have not had to deal with the worst of it.

The checkpoint difference is pretty big depending where you are etc, didn’t they do this with Tiger Heli too?

Got another good run in today, difficulty seems to ramp up at stage 7.

I really dig the soundtrack on this game.

It would be great if someone could figure out a mod to remove the flashing.

I’m envious of y’all playing on arcade PCB. According to System-16 this same PCB supports not only Zero Wing, but also:

  • Demon's World / Horror Story
  • Fire Shark / Same! Same! Same!
  • Hellfire
  • Out Zone
  • Rally Bike / Dash Yarou
  • Truxton / Tatsujin
  • Vimana

Some really nice games on that PCB! I hope someone in the MiSTer development scene can spend some time converting this into a FPGA core. It’s based on a 68k, and a Z80 architecture, which is similar to Genesis/MD, Neo Geo, SEGA System-16, etc.

Just wanted to say the PCE-CD is the version I'm playing and I'm really enjoying it. Best version. My 2 cents.

Interesting take. What do you like about the PCE CD version over the Mega Drive and Arcade? I've been going back and forth between MD and PCE CD versions, and am not yet sure which one I prefer. What stands out to you?

The PCE soundtrack and cut scenes are great. The colors pop even if dialed back a bit graphically. More screen real estate is nice too.

I have not seen the original AYBABTU flash video from 2001 that started all the memes in probably 15 years or so. Gave it a watch just now - pretty good!

Would be pretty funny to have someone make an MD+ or MSU-MD hack of Zero Wing to include the music from this video as the level 1 in-game music.

Wow, I thought for sure everyone would be playing Genesis/MD. I'll probably play the MD version on real hardware anyway, I'd have MAME'd it if not for the red flashes

I'll be playing on a Lemony (TM) JAMMA genesis. I whipped up a cart last night using the PAL rom, a PGA tour golf II cart, and an eprom :D
