This game is only $40, and it's absolutely amazing.
I was worried controls would be too simple like War Thunder, but it's a nice mix of technical while not a full Sim.
It borrows quite heavily from Elite Dangerous, right down to the system controls. Shields, Weapons, and Engines. It's even the same layout as Elite Dangerous.

It's absolutely beautiful in VR. The cockpit is very functional. They stayed true to the ships. You really only have a porthole for tie fighters, while x-wings have better visibility all around.

The Story is arguably better than the last 8 movies. You can tell they leaned heavily on having a diverse cast. The setting is right after the formation of the New Republic and Admiral Sloan exists. It's interesting seeing the Empire after the destruction of the death star.
Spoiler:
The force is only mentioned once

I picked it up on Friday and need to jump into it. Played like ten minutes so far.

It eases you into the controls, but I ran out of buttons on my Hotas. X52 Saitek Pro.

I'd be happy with less story/screwing around between campaign missions (I don't want to talk to 18 people I just wanna kill guys pls), but yeah, the actual gameplay is really well done. It starts out kind of slow and basic but when you keep getting new ships and some pleasantly creative scenarios it gets really good.

How is the VR? Is it nauseating like the car sims?

I stay in it for hours, and I don't even notice. I think you get less sickness in space sims as there is no horizon to screw with your brain.

I take back all the nice things I said about this. It has some game-breaking bugs that completely ruin the game on XB1.

On the mission where you have to shoot down missiles playing as the Empire, my game, rebooted several times, utterly refuses to actually cycle targets or show anything related to them. So, on a glorified escort mission where the margin for error is not at all sizeable, my only chance to win the fucking level is to find the missiles before they get to my guys with none of the intended aids to do so.

Aggravating.

Once upon a time companies had to generally release games that were finished. Now they just release shit and patch it later to fix the stuff that's broken.

edit: it's actually worse than I thought. Set the difficulty to "Story" but every single part of the targeting interface is gone. Can't cycle or track or anything. So even on the easiest goddamn difficulty, my fucking shuttle gets shot down because I have no way of figuring out where the enemy is attacking from other than eyeballing it and hoping on the stupid little radar on the bottom.

This is a fucking piece of shit, at least on consoles. Fuck EA and don't buy this garbage.

edit again: I gave it a couple more tries, but it's completely impossible with no functioning tracking of any kind. Deleted the fucking game. Motive can go fuck themselves. DO NOT BUT THIS TRASH, AT LEAST ON CONSOLE.

When did standards for quality get so goddamn low? It's insane that something so completely broken can release for sale now.

You turned off the HUD ya nitwit. It's a toggle setting.

Holy cow really? I'm gonna assume you're right, that sounds far more plausible.
