My work is definitely feeling the “labor shortage.”

We just upped everyone’s pay $1.50 and have a referral program where you get $250 if you refer some who is hired and they work for 30 days and then another $250 if they stay on 60 and 90 days (so total $750.)

This is for entry level work.

There are a lot of other issues going on of course, but I’ve never seen the staffing so low.

Anyone else?

$2k referral has been increased to $4k. with 30+ positions open in my business unit. Mainly in operations. 70+ positions open for the division.
QC/QA engineers. Manufacturing Operators/ technicians. If you are in the boston area, hit me up.

we are having to increase salary ranges and sign on bonuses. ... a lot.

Is work voluntary when the state, private individuals, and corporations control literally all the arable land?

Yes, starving if you don't work means work is necessary for survival I guess, but it is still voluntary. No one can force you to work to not starve to death.

At least I hope not.

I suppose the point is have we created a system, through organized society, where it is impossible to be free?

Free in this context meaning fully exercising your natural rights.

Ultimately it doesn’t matter, I’m atill
Going to prostitute my time and skills for cash only to end up buying shitty fast food and inane entertainment until I invariably die alone with clogged arteries.

Hmmm that got dark, apologies.

Is life really that bad ?? I can afford to eat pretty well when I'm not choosing to waste money on the black market & eBay. And I would not really consider the work I do to be high paid, slavery or a poor use of my time.

When I did sex work, yes, I can see what you mean. I have too many thoughts about that sector to know where to begin. Living off OnlyFans subscriptions there Lagduf pal? ;)

I’m secretly an optimist, but I really like anti-war novels and dystopian fiction so when I have my moments of doubt they’re pretty dark. Seems to happen Often when I have to interact with some morons at work who are a pain in my ass.

I actually make a fair wage. If I didn’t live in CA and made this I’d be pretty damn well off, not to say I’m not now. I’m certainly in the upper class compared to most of the rest of the world.

Most of the western (particularly US) moralistic view of labor comes out of the
Are you talking about constructive slavery, where the conditions of society render people no choice but to work, or be punished severely?

Due to the labor shortages following the black death, idletors were forced into work houses/camps.

The local casinos run by the Gila River Indian Community, while still requiring masks at all times and temp checks coming in, have now removed all plexiglass shielding from all tables and slots and have also done away with the spacing between the games. The other big casinos in Metro Phoenix still have their barriers in place and player spaced and limited at the table games. Will be interesting if they follow soon.

Good news today! Michigan's governor announced that all Covid restrictions end next Tuesday! Indoor and outdoor gatherings will be at 100% capacity and no more masks. The nightmare is finally coming to an end...

Mask and Capacity restrictions are over in CA. Business can still make their own rules for customers.

Cal-OSHA just voted to allow employers to let vaccinated employees go mask less. You only have to attest that you’re vaccinated. You don’t have to prove it.

Order doesn’t go in to effect for 10 days unless the Governor waived it through executive action.

At my work I think our Board of Directors still has to meet.

I’m also not sure how this applies to schools. I work both in education and congregate care so I’m often jumping regulatory hoops based on what setting I’m in.

As long as the kids have to wear masks in school I’ll probably wear a mask in solidarity. No way I’m asking them to wear a mask at school if I’m not.

Haven't worn a mask for a couple months now and was only wearing it rarely before that. Some stores still have a mask policy for who knows what reason.

Keeping masks on kids, which is still PA policy/mandate/health order/whatever unlegislated enforcement power they're claiming, solely because they can't get any of the available vaccines despite being at basically 0 risk is one of the more infuriating things for me lately.

This is actually not true.

There are real health risks for children who get covid. Both short and long term.

I won't berate you. We understand your frustration. For the first time in forever, I was asked to put on a face mask (that wasn't public transport) because I went to a government building to do something. I did it, sure. But it felt really weird. Because I know and everyone knows the virus is practically stamped out not only in Beijing, but in basically all of China. If there are any cases, the city's locked down. And with 1,400,000,000 people, and everyone not wearing masks anymore, what's the fucking point?

I get the anger, but I comply. For the greater good.

How many Americans are dead from covid now? I don't keep up with that. I'm pretty curious about the longterm effects of having covid. Like breathing in asbestos a few years ago and all of a sudden uh oh you got cancer.

Of all the positive tests, which most agree are a significant undercount overall and probably especially so in children since they often showed less serious symptoms or may have been completely asymptomatic, only 0.1% of children testing positive required hospitalization, and 0.01% have died.

300 dead children is a tragedy for sure, masking 75 million children in an futile effort to prevent it is a travesty. Even if we accept the efficacy of cloth masks, children do not wear them properly anyway, my kids have been in a large daycare setting since late Spring 20202 and we have had I think two or three isolated cases among children.

(Children for the data I could find were compiled from state data for people under the age of 16-20 depending on state, while my post was more referring children under say 12, but I want able to quickly find that info.)

I agree the long term effects are a concern, but they are also a huge question mark and now that a vaccine is readily available, responsibility can no longer be reasonably put on others (remember the 'my mask is for you, your mask is for me'? Collectivism, yay!).

But there are also emerging questions about heart inflammation in young people after receiving the vaccine. Still rare and possibly still worth getting it, but as the approved age range creeps down, that risk will be going up against the relatively low overall risk from covid itself.

Google says we just crossed 600k deaths.

Children should always wear masks. Scary creatures.
