I have two MVS cartridges that do not work properly. The first is Metal Slug 3 which I have had for a while which no matter how much I clean the contacts it still gives graphics errors. The second is a Samurai Shodown which will not load at all (crashes), it has been opened at some point (ripped label) so I think that maybe one of the boards has been swapped. Maybe from another game?.

I have uploaded some pictures that may help someone point out the problems.

Samurai Shodown PCB 2 http://www.zen91691.zen.co.uk/mvs/sspcb2.jpg

Any help is very much appreciated, Ace.

Can you post a pic of the MS3 graphic problem?

Check the solder joints on the bottom sides to make sure they are all good. Look for any scratches on the boards that could break a trace.

Are the graphics problems constant or do they flicker around, even if the game is supposed to display a constant image?

Certain sprites are missing completely. I do not think it is damage to the pcbs as they are mint. I think one or more of the eproms/mask roms has been damaged, maybe the cartridge has been plugged in upside down at some point?.

Fn site..I typed a whole buncha stuff and it

Have you ever tried to put the boards into the mobo out of the shell?

Sometimes a carts shell will be pressing on the boards to tight causing them to warp...Loosening the screws a little sometimes helps.

Have you ever tried to pull the carts out of the mobo slightly..

What cleaning methods are you using?

I was sold a cart with graphical errors..It went through a few hands and every person who had it used the always recommended cleaning methods(alcohol, eraser etc.....and it still had graghical issues afterwards..
The connectors were still yellow though cleaned many times..

I got my scotch brite out, cleaned the connectors to a shiny silver..used alcohol to clean the residue off and Bam the graghical issues are gone.(they were there before I cleaned the cart as I tried the cart before I cleaned it..

Oh yea they will crc check ok with me to when dirty...It's a few or even one pin that just not making a good enough contact to create the graphics errors ..(if dirty cart connectors is the problem)

I'll take you a SS1 board pic tomorrow morn..

If you need a scan LMK..

Note..I've never heard of a Samurai Shodown 1 boot, nor have ever seen one..
So 99% you don't have a boot.

Thanks again chris.

Just as I suspected my first pcb shown here http://www.zen91691.zen.co.uk/mvs/sspcb.jpg is defferent to yours shown on the left.

This could a revision? maybe the two eproms contain the data from the missing mask rom?. I guess my best bet is to desolder one of them and use romident.

I will report back with my findings. :)

Turns out the data was bad on eprom1 (bit rot?) now fully working. :)

I guess bit rot can happen sooner than a lot of people think.
