Steam

VF5 REVO (haven't played any of these since the Saturn days)
VF5 Revo Hell yes. New balance patch is coming March 26 so I might get back into it. They've announced that some system changes may be happening too, which would be nice if they got rid of the stagger mechanic. I'm too old for rocking the joystick back and forth rapidly.

PS5 / Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: My Xbox One erased my Final Fantasy XIII save so I stopped playing it - I did mod my Final Fantasy XIII on Steam though and now it looks 100x better than the Xbox so eventually I'll play it there.

I'm 30 hours into Rebirth and it's... OK... I just got to the Chocobo racing, which is fun. There are so many boring parts in this game and the movement... why does it take so long to go up ladders? Final Fantasy XV and Final Fantasy XVI are way better due to movement alone.

My PS5 says I'm half way through the game so I'll keep on going. Can't say that Rebirth is my favorite, but who knows.. maybe it will get super good in the back half!

Gotta say the visuals on vanilla PS5 in the open world areas are *bad* ... like real bad. The characters look blurry and weird. So far.... I think it's worth playing if you liked Remake - kind of more of that really.

It's Doom Resurrection on 32X+CD again, or Doom II and some custom maps, to be precise. Carmack sez it rocks so there must be something to it... my definitive version, SAT fans meet me at Fickteuchstrasse :p :D
Did you see that scientists have taken human brain cells and trained them to play Doom in a lab?

Maybe we are all just cells in a dish being stimulated for some other beings curiosity...

Ninja Emaki - 1986 arcade game from Nihonbussan. First off, one of the most striking title screens of any arcade game, much less one that came out in 1986:
Spoiler:
NINJAEMAKI.jpg
. I'm 100% sure there's a guy who has had this title screen in his sig from like 20 years ago, so nice to finally get the reference. I picked this game purely at random so it was a great surprise - it's part-shmup, part-Ikari Warriors/Commando overhead shooter. For me, 1987 was the year video games started to get a style beyond the ordinary, so to see this 1986 game have so much character and beautiful pixel art was a LoneSage delight. I feel embarrassed that I hadn't even heard of this game until a couple days ago.

Finest Hour - a 1989 arcade game by Namco that never got a release outside Japan. Immediately you're greeted with a gigantic Namco logo that fits itself on screen followed by the text, "One of their all time best". That definitely sets a high bar. What follows is not their all time best, but an admirable effort nonetheless. Anyone who's played Assault Suit Leynos 2 on the Saturn will get a massive sense of deja vu, because it's a lot like that except with less bullshit. One of the most inexplicable things is this game has to have one of the longest Continue screens in arcade history, because when you die there's like five lines of text that appear on screen saying all systems down, and then it turns to a slow-scrolling screen asking Do you Choose to Continue the Mission or Escape and Go Home, AND THEN the text changes again to Do Your Hope or Do You Fear? which is when you actually select yes to keep going. THEN, after that it goes back to the game and you see your mech's health go all the way back to normal, slowly.

You can really get the idea that the guys who made this game were dead set on making it as something as epic as Gundam. I really feel for them, because clearly there was a lot of heart that went into this game. The first time I played it I thought it was bleh, but then I played it again and liked it a lot more the second time - in the third level there's actually a bit of exploration leeway that's granted to you if you choose, and while I usually hate exploration in sidescrolling games, it was a lot of fun here. Unfortunately the final boss you need to kill in one life or it's automatic game over a la NAM-1975. Anyways, at the very least this game deserved a better title.

This week is definitely one of the better ones when it comes to MAME roulette.

Undeadline (MD) - We had a shmup of the month thread going with this one and back then I found it very hard bordering on unplayble, the MSX original wasn't easy either but IMO more accessible and the screen feels less crowded. Now that I've been playing the MD version for a while, it grew on me and I can't get enough. The game is really merciless, if you lose a life it's back to the very beginning of the level again, there are treasure chests that give you extra weapons but also deadly poisons or strip you of all your powerups, and don't get me started on the mid- and level-bosses. You get showered with tons of enemies, thorough memorisation is key to advance, as is lots of practise, at least for me, gonna play this one for a while longer.

That said, it's an awesome game with very well thought-out level design and gameplay. It took me a while to tune in to the weapon system in the MD version, some weapons that work for me on MSX do not on MD and vice versa, it's important to experiment a lot, the right choice of weapon makes tricky parts more doable.

Robocop vs. The Terminator (MD) - Great mindless fun, it's like all the late 80s and early 90s action platformer Robocop games rolled into one, it has the gore, the humour, excellent playability and great visuals and sound, it's an awesome package for those who like a bit of pixel carnage every now and then. It's fun, that's what counts for me, to a point where I don't even care about its unforgiving difficulty in later levels, luckily the early levels are quite easy so you can get a few extra men before the going gets tough. Awesome game overall from the late MD era.

Space Dungeon (Atari 5200 emu) - A Robotron-style shooter where you move from room to room, collect treasure, kill tons of weird and wonderful enemies and cash in your findings for a grand result. Doesn't look like much but is just awesome to play, I'm a sucker for dual-stick shooters and this one does not disappoint, it's fast, flashy and fun, good stuff for some half an hour of intense blasting. The 5200 version is the only official console port of this early 80s Taito game in existence, which I always found strange because it's a really good game that would have deserved way more attention from gamers. If you like Robotron, you gonna love Space Dungeon.

Robotron 2084 (Atari 5200 emu) - Certainly not the best version of the game but strangely addictive, most elements of the arcade game are there, controls are flawless and the sound is spot-on. Player and enemy sprites are much larger than in the arcade game which makes the game feel claustrophobic at times but it's not a problem, just makes things extra challenging. Movement isn't as smooth as in the real thing, it feels a lil' rough around the edges. Speaking of challenge, the game has six difficulty modes where 0 is for after-work relaxashun and 5 is gonna beat yer balls with a baseball bat. I'm playing on 3 at the moment, tried 5 but couldn't get past some lame 15k-ish pts.

Castlevania Bloodlines - played this again thanks to that recent thread, and on the anniversary of its release date (March 17th, 1994) which was pure coincidence. Later just played through it a couple more times the rest of the week.

I can't remember the last time I played this, I guess it's been a long time? So it was really nice coming back to it and being legitimately surprised by a few things - the level of gore (the zombies in the first stage, some of them have a ton of their innards just come out when you hit them, as well as some of the harpies' heads come off and blood spurts out but they're still alive and flying around so you still have to kill them) and one part in the game where the paths branch depending on if you chose John or Eric. So that was nice to still be surprised by a game I've played for 30 years.

I can't remember if this is the first time if I've completed the game on Expert, but man what a nice difficulty. This game and Contra Hard Corps, thank mao for Konami USA asking to up the ante when it comes to difficulty for both games because it really makes the game shine. It also just came to me with Castlevania games the way they enhance the difficulty on the second loop is just add a lot of extra bats swooping in at random places - this was a tradition I've seen in games where I played through second loops with Haunted Castle, SCIV, and now this. It wouldn't surprise me if random bats also appeared in second loops in other Castlevanias. Just funny that it hit me this time. The last level, the final boss rush starting with Death (which took out the health meat!) and the previous level bosses, and then onto the lady vampire Bartley and Medusa, and then Dracula himself, with ZERO health-ups, is a fun challenge and doesn't allow for any mistakes.

About the game, what else is there to say about a classic like this? I think for the first time I can admit that the controls aren't as great as they could be, especially when it comes to John using the whip to swing on the ceiling. It's not a big deal to me but it is noticeable.

Oh, I guess I had a revelation that Dracula's second form was supposed to be a witch who featured more prominently in the Japanese version. I always thought he looked like Death but now I can see it was meant to be the witch who resurrected Bartley. And there's a code you put in that plays one of three NES Vania tunes updated on Genesis when your weapon gets maxed out, which was neat.

The game is still nearly perfect and shows just how much Konami mastered the Genesis in its late life. There was a time I liked it more than IV, which isn't true now, but I do still prefer it over Rondo.

Got a Switch 2 for my son’s bday as well as Mario Kart World and DK Bananza.

Mario Kart is fine…same game as it has been for decades. Don’t really have a problem with it but hard for a man in his late 40s to give a shit about it.

Artistically (autistically) it’s actually pretty good. Some tracks are pretty creative which is nice to see. Have only played multiplayer…so haven’t even seen what the open world stuff is about. Seems lame tho.

I will say they totally fucked up the character and kart selection. My son was disappointed you can’t customize your karts anymore. What a dumb decision to remove that.

Alien Soldier - first time in 15 years playing through it, still so good. The wolfman riding a horse boss gave me goosebumps and had me smiling the whole time through. The whole game is unapologetic about what it is, and it's a masterpiece.

Interestingly came across this article that finally clearly explained the plot and that definitely enhances the experience: https://mdshock.com/2024/04/12/the-incredibly-bizarre-plot-of-alien-soldier-finally-explained/

I had no idea it was basically an unfinished game, and yet it still remains at the top.

That backstory is massive, excited to read it. Makes me want to finally finish this one. I wonder what the "finished" game would've been like.

Alien Soldier

I still don't think I have the bandwidth to really hang with Alien Soldier. I've kinda learned how to make more sense of it over time (I've learned how to utilize that full meter invincibility dash in boss fights more effectively). There's a lot about the game that overwhelms me, but it's still very cool.

I also love Bloodlines.

Dynamite Headdy - the big article Diehard Gamefan did left a big impression on me, especially the Baby Head boss. It wasn't until I bought the game 10 years later that I was able to play it, but by then I only managed halfway and then just gave up on it.

Finally beat it, and the difficulty is still up there. I played the Japanese version, which is quite different from the American one, most notably there is dialogue in the game before boss battles, dunno why that was taken out in America.

The game is still one of the weirdest and visually impressive titles for the Genesis. In one level, the boss was already beaten by the girl Headdy and is never seen. Another level starts with no enemies and just cows after an intense level, giving the player a breather. The Baby Head boss, when it turns into the old man, if he grabs Headdy then he dies from old age. The secret ending makes fun of Konami trying to turn the game into a franchise and only caring about profits. So many other funny little weird things.

The difficulty really surprised me in later stages. I think if there were some changes made, maybe to hitboxes, that might have made it more manageable. The basketball mini game got old quick, too. The second act of the first stage also is pretty lame and for some reason gives me Bubsy vibes with the music.

But the rest of the game is so inventive and creative, with some ways of fighting bosses not seen in any other game. It's a classic. You could tell Treasure was immensely proud since they gave themselves a five minute credits sequence.

Final Fantasy I (NES) Played through the game (Fighter/Blackbelt/ Red Mage/ Black Mage) and played with the Nintendo Power guide. Got to the end then power leveled all my characters to the max (lvl. 50). Once I discovered that Fast Spell + Blackbelt just *melts* everything, the game was very easy, not that it's difficult - it's just grindy. I had a really good time with it - it's always better than I remember it. I'm now playing Final Fantasy II (Translation + Restored Patch - adds dashing and a smoother XP grind).

Cyber Lip (homecart) - Max, the son of my neighbour, loves the game, we've been playing it quite a lot lately. I have to say it's a bit on the easy side, the level bosses are repetitive. I also find the weapons system rather weird, feels kinda unrefined overall. Other than that it's a great afterhours game, 20 mins, half an hour, blast a few cyborgs and alien dick man and whatnot, good fun.

Gauntlet II (Atari ST) - Not quite on Gauntlet IV MD-level but close enough, plays great and looks good too. I love wrecking monsters with the bouncing weapon upgrade. Gets really difficult from level 6 or 7 onwards, those damn acid puddles or whatever the green slimey blobs are really drive me crazy.

Crossed Swords 2 (NGCD) - Always was one of my fav non-fighters on CD, cool game, great bold graphics and really good soundtrack and fx. Gameplay is fun, once you've figured out the various attack and defense patterns of your enemies, the game really opens up. The game throws loads of weird and wonderful enemies at you, slashing them to pieces is awesome, feels really satisfying to land one of those overheads, eh. I really hope they are going to release this one for the Plus.

Robotron 2084 (Atari 400 Mini/Atari 800XL) - You know, I'm a Robotron fan and have loads of versions of the game, including ways to play it arcade perfect, but somehow I always come back to this one (and the 7800 one). It's addictive like crack, at least for me, and a great challenge since the screen is more cramped due to the lower resolution but the awesome twinstick gameplay is still there, Robotron intensity, soooo good.

The AES+ news made me dig out my copy of Magician Lord, having a blast with it.
The crowd who bought it for the AES+ out of curiosity are very likely not to enjoy it much though :keke:

I was ballzdeep in Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance on gba. Played and loved the other two back in the day, but missed this one. Well, I was loving it, put a lot of time into it, but I got to the point where I'm doing nothing but backtracking trying to find what I missed in order to open a new section of castle, and I got frustrated, and put it down nearly a week ago. Picked up a book instead, and I've been reading ever since. I'm gonna come back refreshed though, Dracula and Maxim haven't seen the last of ol prof just yet.
