If you don't have kids throwing toys all over the garden, 100% get a robomow
I've been feeling like changing up some aspects of my life for a while now. I know my grass is being cut but it doesn't feel like 'my' lawn because other people have been doing it for me. I feel out of touch with my own domicile and I've been wanting to be more 'aware' of the space that I'm responsible for. This is one good way to do that, I think.

It also showed me how fucking out of shape I am. I weigh 190 lbs at 6' so it's not like I'm fat or anything. But I definitely am out of shape.

That’s fair, but once you get in shape and can mow the lawn real quick it’s still going to suck. Just a little less than it used to.

First job was in 1979 at the age of 13, going on 14 at an arcade called Fun Factory. Stayed there until they closed down a couple of years later: started hanging out there and then the tech started allowing me to go with him out on street routes and picking up the nuances of the business. My first real check paying job was Games People Play, a great little arcade until I came to work one morning and the doors were locked due to non-payment on the site. Found that another person who was trying to get a foothold in the game room business and had him look into the games left on site and he eventually bought the place, lease and hired me. Later on, worked in an arcade at the Arizona State University campus that was owned by the old game company Venture Line (known for the videogame Looping and the cocktail table pinball Joker's Wild). After the company folded, went to work for Golfland in 1988. Their tech trained me quite a bit and I helped him with a side job at a local pizza chain call Pistol Pete's Pizza. After getting fired from Golfland, stayed with Pistol Pete's until 1993, when they were bought out by Peter Piper Pizza. Less than a year later, I left to work with one of the old Pistol Pete's manager to Pepi's Pizza. Stayed there until they closed in 2010. Finally, got hired by Peter Piper where my general manager went to after the place closed and didn't mind it since it was a franchise operator. Corporate took over in late 2020 and stayed there with my new official title: Technical Manager and still work there to this day.

1979 to 2025. 46 years working on games. Only job I've ever had and wouldn't want to work in anything else :buttrock:

Mowing the lawn with a push mower in an area with high humidity, where you have to mow weekly in the summer, sucks.
Boom. This right here.

2 acres - every week. Dad didn't like riding mowers because they "always broke down." Ive done my stint on yardwork.

190lbs isn't a bad starting point. You can definitely improve your fitness with a bit of work. I take care of my own yard as well and find it rewarding as well as a good workout. The only downside is storing and maintaining the necessary equipment.

Yeah me too we had a riding mower but my Father still had me doing some areas and the perimeter around the trees and bushes with a push mower, that still took hours every weekend or more when our riding mower was down. When I got to high school my parents had a pool put in so that cut down on some of the area at least. Favorite time was when I was cutting around a stump and mowed over a wasps nest. All of a sudden I felt all of these needles in my knee but couldn’t tell what was going on. At least it gave me time to to think while mowing I liked that.

My parents have a transmission pipeline running through the back of their yard, and one year the pipeline company had all of the bushes cut so they could monitor it with helicopters and planes. They grew back though but It was wild with them not there for a bit. Neighbor’s had pool and tennis courts not zoned properly so the tennis court was taken out.

I would take mowing over raking damp leaves any day though.

Kenny Rogers Roasters baby. 16 yo, good friend worked there and convinced me that getting a paycheck was preferable to not getting one and that listening to Lucille every day would not make me go insane.

Learning to cut chickens was kind of cool, free meals were nice, and I had a co-worker named Mustang (for real) who led shifts and then put on the very best country mixes for closing and had dance moves for every song.

IIRC I lasted about six months. First job I actually kept for a while was Target stockroom. Really nice not having to deal with customers on that one.

Lots of Pete's in the business. :keke:
Do you miss the hay days of arcades when the innovation of video games was still in the arcade? Seems like it is al clawgames and tablet games in the arcades now. Last time I had a real whoa moment was with the star wars battle pod. That game was pretty sweet.

It's more about the cardio, endurance and stamina. I have what many would describe as a 'dad bod' even though I'm not a dad so I could use some work if I was ever inclined but I'm not out of control. It's more that I've been less physically active in the past couple of years so the legs get tired faster. After the wife got sick, there were less and less neighborhood walks and the like so here I am.

I think it was detasseling corn…
Start early in the summer, to beat the afternoon heat. Had to wear pants and long sleeves unless you wanted to be cut up by the corn leaves. Paid alright for a 13yo, I remember my parents would drop me off at a local IGA for the bus and I’d have to use a pay phone to get picked up or walk to my Oma’s house. We rode on machines between the rows for hours.

I won the first job lottery, for any teenage, game playing goob. Mom and pop video store up the street I could bike to hired me at around 13 to do odd jobs, cut the grass(this only happened once, it was my first and last time cutting grass). When the boss found out I was into video games and they could be priced differently depending on title I was in. He just knew people wanted to rent/buy them but wasn’t a player so to him everything should be priced the same, right?

When I was a year or two older I got behind the counter, ran the register, priced out game trades, did console testing, cleaning and light repair. This is where it really amped up for me, since everyone would bring in old 8-16 bit collections want to trade up for one of the new 32 bit consoles. I saw some real beautiful complete games come in for very little money. Prior to turning 18 I was paid under the table, boss would ask how many hours I worked that day, and either pull out his wallet or let me walk out with a stack of game trade ins we’d taken that day. This was instrumental to me building my vintage gaming collection.

I ended up working that job for over 10 years and going on to manage a second location for a couple years until it closed. I realize i’m very fortunate for this opportunity, basically every kids wet dream in that era. The job didn’t pay much but the benefits were unparalleled. I still have the majority of games I acquired back then, at least the good stuff after years of culling the chaff. I still have fond memories from that era of my life.

Apart from mowing lawns and delivering newspapers when I was a kid, my first "real" job was bussing tables at a barbecue restaurant. Then an arcade for a year. Then an Electronics Boutique through most of college. Kept me in weed and video games. Everyone should be required to work food service and retail at some point in their lives. Would make the world a better place.

Not technically a job, but I mowed lawns in middle and high school to buy Nintendo tapes. First real job was at Little Caesars. I started out making $4.25 an hour, I was quickly promoted to assistant manager for $6.50 an hour! Wow!

I forgot to mention, the video store I worked at also had porn, complete with saloon doors.

On Saturdays my parents would bring me lunch before I had a car. At the time the Maccas double cheeseburger meal was on the regular rotation. I’m sitting at the back desk with a Genesis torn apart and a big stack of DVD porn on each side of me. Dad walks in with the brown bag and looks at what i’m doing, then looks at the stack of porn closest to him. On the cover there was a smiling chick with 5 dicks around her face. He sees what’s going on, looks at me, sets the bag down on the desk, nods and walks out:keke:

That could have gone entirely differently if it was your mom who dropped the bag…

Yup, years later she said if she’d known there was porno there she wouldn’t have let me get the job. Good thing she was never curious what was behind those saloon doors:keke:

Weird, this is exactly the same as basic's first job story, only with all of the words deleted except '5 dicks around his face'

I swept floors and cleaned bathrooms at a print shop. Sucked honestly.

One of the key takeaways from that was I learned that women ironically, left waaaay more disgusting bathrooms than men.

lol 100% true. When I worked at Walmart in the 90s sometimes Id get assigned "stockman" for my shift which meant collecting carts from the parking lot, mopping up spills in aisle 3, and cleaning the bathrooms.

Women are much much more disgusting than men.

For those not into grossness, I'll spoiler this.

On several occasions cleaning the women's room involved emptying out the tampon/pad receptacles. They normally didnt make it into the bin on their first try so they'd just drop em on the ground. Once, apparently a woman had some kind of heavy cycle and took the tampon out and smeared her blood over the entire seat. She basically painted the thing.

Then there are the ones that missed the toilet entirely and shit on the floor next to the toilet instead of in it.

Mens room? "Ah damn, gotta mop up those piss drops that hit the floor." Women: Bring in the hazmat suits.
