What's up with the flags on members usernames

That indicate we are online?

I don't really care whether it shows we're online or not, but is there a way to disable the flag?

It looks terrible right next to my name, this is stressing me out.

The only flags I ever see are the ones underneath some members' locations (the Chinese flag in LoneSage's and Kid Panda's cases for example). Otherwise, I too just see the green dots next to usernames when they're online.
