League Bowling came before Cool Spot, but Spot was the logo for 7-up well before that. It doesn't really matter though, because spot is a flat circle and the League Bowling guy is (presumably) a sphere.

The first Cool Spot games came out in '93, however the character allegedly was on the scene in the late 80's if Wikipedia is correct.
League Bowling was released in '91.

Also League Bowling was the first round, red, sunglasses-wearing mascot to have eyebrows; Clearly a step up.

Add this to the 1 million+ things you didn't know about Neo Geo: in the late 80s, SNK and 7UP were in a partnership, evident by the appearance of Cool Spot in the background of SNK's Street Smart in level 4. Later, SNK wanted their own Cool Spot game with a bowling theme, because 7UP was notoriously popular at bowling alleys. An agreement couldn't be reached between shares of profit, though, so SNK continued ahead and created a bowdlerized version of Cool Spot, while 7UP approached Virgin Interactive to create a game for them on the Genesis and SNES, this time without the bowling motif because by then 7UP had gone out of favor in bowling alleys to Mr. Pibb.

Leagueboy has eyebrows so he's clearly a original character (do not steal!!! 1! 1!!)
