Whose buying one?

A Mario game is supposed to launch with the system. It feels too soon for another system to be released given how underwhelming the Wii was.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Nintendo's Wii U finally has a price and release date: The next-generation gaming console, which comes with a large touchscreen controller, will go on sale in the United States on Sunday, Nov. 18 for $300.

A second, "deluxe" version will cost $350. That version has additional memory and a charging pad/cradle for the GamePad controller, plus some other extras. The basic version is white; the upgraded one is black.

The Wii U console itself looks a lot like its predecessor, which launched in 2006 for about $250. The Wii U's big difference lies in its special wireless GamePad controller. It gives the bearer special powers, adding a new layer to both single- and multi-player games.

The GamePad features a 6.2-inch touchscreen that works differently with each game. CNNMoney tried it out during a series of demos with Nintendo in New York City.

With multi-player games the GamePad holder sees different things on the touchscreen than what their fellow gamers, who have regular controllers, see on the linked-up TV.

In a chasing game that Nintendo showed off, players with regular controllers team up and try to catch the gamer with the touchscreen. The regular players simply see their avatars running around on the TV -- but the GamePad holder sees an overhead map on the touchscreen, which shows where everyone else is running.

In its single-player mode, the GamePad adds some special features or interacts with what's happening on the TV screen. An archery game at the demo featured enemies that "jumped" off the screen and onto the GamePad controller if they weren't defeated quickly enough, giving the player a second chance at victory.

A first-person shooter game used the GamePad for grabbing items. Players could also move the controller around the room to check out a special heat-map.

Nintendo is hoping these special elements are attractive enough for a successful Wii U launch, as its last hardware release proved to be a misstep. The handheld 3DS system went on sale for $250 in March 2011, and its day-one sales beat records. But sales slumped over the next several weeks, and the Nintendo was forced to slash the 3DS' price to $170.

Meanwhile, the idea of "casual gaming" -- which Nintendo helped invent -- has evolved to include mobile and social gaming. But Nintendo has consistently said it's not interested in putting its games on other platforms, even as gaming has exploded on Apple's iPhone and other smartphones, as well as on Facebook

IGN has a cool article

Deluxe version also comes with Nintendoland

I have a little over $200 paid on my reserve at Play N' Trade. Looks like I have $150 to go...

I dunno, Wii has been around, what, five years now? I think the Gamecube only had a similar kind of lifespan before Nintendo withdrew first party support.

I definitely agree that the Wii has been pretty underwhelming during its tenure and I'm not really fussed about owning a Wii U... and probably won't unless Nintendo get another exclusive like they had with Biohazard 4 on the cube.

Does anyone know how much more power the Wii U has over the 360 and PS3?

talk about pricing yourself out of the market

$100 needs to come off that price, and quickly

yes, because home-carts are a great source of comparison against *anything*

as far as performance goes, its hard to say. Even though the specs have been reveled, we still don't know how fast in terms of clockspeed the CPU is, as well as the GPU. In theory, the performance should be better than the 360/PS3.

I thought that I read that the Wii U is slightly more powerful than the PS3.

Which is quite a leap forward because wasn't the Wii just a Gamecube with a new case?

Yes, that's a serious question.

WiiU has 1Gb of ram, which is double that of a 360 and 4x as much as PS3. It also has a tri-core power pc cpu, which is what the 360 has. What we dont know is the clock speed, and not much tech info is known about the GPU. I would expect the WiiU to perform better than a 360/PS3 but i dont think it will smoke them.

I sold my Wii last Christmas, but kept a few games since WiiU is backwards compatible. I guess I'm sorta committed to buy one eventually. :D

I wouldn't spend actual money on one, but if someone gave me one as a gift I may or may not actually use it.

Nintendo-wise, I'm still having a hard time moving up from the N64

someone was asking about performance. I dont really care about clock speeds either, especially since in this day and age its all about the GPU.

fun is fun , sure..but what launch titles grab you? Right now i dont see anything good

Fuckin' A man, you hit the nail on the head. This system will rock like all the other Nintendo systems that came before it. I love my Wii and the games that I have for it are some of my favorites this gen.

I was starting to think this thread would be overrun with old jaded fucks like the Bayonetta 2 thread. Thankfully there are a few level headed individuals such as this good man who get it. Fun is fun. Get past the bullshit.

Nintendo got it right with the $299 price point. I'll be there day if to get the $350 model.

Well i just went to my local Gamestop not 30 min. ago and pre-ordered and paid off my Black WiiU system. i also pre-order Pikimin 3 and Black Ops 2. i know when i'm taking my vacation now!

i wasn't thinking too hard about getting WiiU but after hearing that Monster Hunter is coming the console in march next year, my decision was made. i bought my original Wii to play Monster Hunter 3 on the day of its release, and so again i'm buying a nintendo system for MH. console version are always a must buy for me. although they didn't have Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate available for pre-order at this time... :(

i only hope they dont release some kind of bundle package for MH3U because then i will want that.

or maybe i'll sell my WiiU this holiday season for $1000 and buy another WiiU when MH3U comes out ;)

It's a fair comment on this forum. People that will spend hundreds on a single game don't need to be complaining when they can obtain a fresh console for the same price.

Some people around here don't take too kindly to logic.

My wife and I are excited! We decided that it would be our gift to each other for Christmas; I haven't played a Mario game on Christmas morning since the mid 90's, and it will be awesome for us to be able to play the game together. Everything about the system looks fun, the price is fair, and it will be nice to treat ourselves.

I would pay $250 for a Wii with an HDMI port and upscaling.
