Waku Waku 7: A Pleased Review by Bobak!
In Brief:
After releasing the decent space-based fighting game, Galaxy Fight, Sunsoft reentered the fighting game arena with Waku Waku 7 -one of the greatest games to ever grace the Neo Geo. Unfortunately, since it was only released on MVS and Japanese home cart, it can be quite hard to a hold of -but those who've played all agree: Its a masterpiece (and it doesn't even have the words 'King' or 'Samurai' in the title).
Graphics:
Big, colorful cartoony graphics saturate the world of Waku Waku 7. The characters are well drawn and their respective backgrounds are equally animated and creative. No ultra-serious martial arts masters in this one. If you've never seen a giant monster-bunny and a little girl go toe-to-toe with a pair of midgets in a walking tank, then you're in for a treat!
Music/SFX:
Amazing -no, stupendous music! The game is flawless in the sound department. It includes some of my all-time favorite video game theme songs (particularly Dandy J's stage). Even with my inherent disgust for J-pop, I'm pleased to report that they placed an entire song in the background of one of the stages. The sound effects and voices are equally well produced. Way to go, Sunsoft!
Playability:
As close to perfect as humanly programmable. Like any good game (video game or otherwise), Waku Waku 7 is easy to learn, and nearly impossible to master. With so many special moves, super moves, and other secret attacks -it will keep you busy and coming back for more. It's even more fun with friends.
Overall:
Wow, what more can I say? All that keeps this game from a perfect score is its limited amount of characters -a minor complaint indeed! Waku Waku 7 is like a really good movie you wish would never end. Unfortunately, its also a very hard game to come by, but if you are lucky enough to get your hands on a copy play it, play it, play it (you won't be forcing yourself) -and by golly, make other play it too. You owe it to the world.
BREAKDOWN:
Graphics: 95%
Music/SFX: 100%
Playability: 100%
Replay Value: Excellent
Overall: 96%
Here's a link to one of my favorite reviews of Waku Waku 7.
Bobak!: was indicted in the lesser known but equally scandalous Arms-for-Video-Games crisis of the mid-80s. After being found guilty of brokering an illegal deal with the Nicaraguan Sandanistas to trade copies of Zaxxon for weapons, he was placed under permanent house arrest in an undisclosed Wyoming town. He's been playing video games ever since, and with the advent of the internet, writing reviews.
