Metal Slug has the rare distinction of being one of the few super GREAT and FUN games on the Neo-Geo that is not a 2D beat'em up. It was a surprise hit for SNK when they released it back in 1995.
Metal Slug is an old school 2D platform/shooter in the tradition of Gunstar Heroes (hehe played Gunstar Heroes on the Genesis so much i almost failed in school back in 1993) or Contra. You and a friend must blast your way through six levels of intense side scrolling action, utilizing weapon power-ups of the enemy, all in the name of patriotism.
So what makes Metal Slug so special? You have NEVER seen 2D this insanity (and it is just that) at home! The attention to detail is just staggering. From humorous character animations, to the intricate backgrounds, to the sheer volume of sprites on screen, Metal Slug is truly a thing of beauty, a work of art!
Game play wise Metal Slug is not doing anything new, although, what it does it does it well. The game has a few control issues (no diagonal shooting and jumping down through platforms) but good players like "ME" (I can't resist) will find a way to work around these limitations. The action is fast and furious and the vast number of unique levels gives the game a strong replay value. It harkens back to the halcyon days of the 16-bit when a game was so fun you would actually play it over and over, but now games seem to have lost that touch, what a shame. If you are like me and like INSANE 2D games and like to KICK BUTT, then your prayers have just been answered!
The game has already 3 sequels and it is one of the *BEST* 2D games ever made! GO BUY IT NOW! Go KICK some BUTT marine! Now, when I sit back and go play some more Metal Slug, I say to myself how can a system this old give graphics this INSANE? Well, thanks for those 10 great years SNK. This game gets five *'s in every category, you have to play it to believe it!
