I dug my childhood system out of storage recently, and it looks like the screen's polarizer has gone bad.

I would love to get it fixed, but I know I am definitely not up to the task.

Anyone know a good and reliable repair service?

There is a very simple screen replacement that you could do. Granted, there are a number of more involved mods available out there which use superior screens, but the modding process is much more difficult for those. This TFT screen mod will give you a much better experience than your standard GBC screen, and it is a simple, no-soldering required process. This short video shows the process, and includes links to handheld legend, a retailer of GB modding equipment.

For those without much (or any) experience modding a GB, this is as simple as it gets, and the end product is excellent.

Can someone help me diagnose the issue with this Game Boy Color?

I just assumed it was an issue with the polariser, just cause that's what it seems like people always mentioned when I was doing my half-assed research, although I'm not sure now.

This was kept in storage at my folks' place for over a decade. When I packed it away it looked fine, when I pulled it out it looked like the stuff in the pictures. I thought originally the screen was just dirty, but it doesn't come off when I try to clean it.

The system powers on fine, and plays and still sounds fine, the screen is just yucky.

Is it a polariser issue or something else?

I call it "screen cancer." It's failed with age. The good news is that it's easy to fix by swapping out the whole LCD assembly, the hard part is that you can really only get them from another GBC. Alternatively, it's a good excuse to do a screen mod kit.

I might have an original screen kicking around from when I was modding GBCs, I'll have to check. I know I have a beat up but working GBC that I could steal a screen from, I just don't remember what condition it was in but I think it was fine.
