Hi all,

I recently aquired a nonworking MVS2 -01 board and found one of the blue ceramic caps had popped:

The cap only has 104 written on it, can anyone provide the correct specs or link to mouser/digikey/farnell/other for replacement?

I've already removed the battery and would like to replace this before trying to turn it on.

Thanks in advance!

It's a 0.1uF capacitor. Not sure of voltage rating though. Shoot high for safety.

Yeah those are 100nF or 0.1uF ceramic caps, DO NOT USE TANTALS, THEY WILL BURN!

As they only have to work unter 5V voltage, anything above that is fine.

They are used for power conditioning on the digital ICs, one for each IC usually, thus it should work with one or multiple missing.

Thanks @Lach and @maki, really was hoping for the exact same caps to have it match perfectly, but after a day of searching and comparing images, I don't think that's happening. Whoever made them probably no longer exist. Closest match I found was Tokin, font looks very similar but their underline had a gap and they had an extra T on it.

I will put in an order for some 0.1uF/25V ceramic caps as soon as I get something else in my basket to make up for the 15-20€ shipping :sigh:

I've been using these

The are a little bit smaller then the originals.

If you only need a couple, maybe you can find someone local to you that has a parts board to steal some from.

Thanks for confirming @ack , I actually have those and RDER71E104K0K1H03B and FA28X8R1E104KNU06 in my basket. Will see which match the closest.
Hopefully the colors are close enough it doesn't stand out like a sore thumb 🤞*

*he says, knowing full well the PCB is covered with a metal shield and put in a cabinet where almost no one will ever see it again

So Farnell.es ships caps from... Drumroll... The UK 🤦 ffs
I've no confidence their 24/48h delivery will make it to me before the weekend (ordered at 8am this morning). Will be looking for another source for next time as UK export times are crazy slow.

To my surprize, they did show up today!

Comparison of caps (for future reference):
  • TDK FA28X8R1E104KNU00 IMG_20230301_205141.jpg
  • TDK FA28X8R1E104KNU06 vs FA28X8R1E104KNU00 (slightly shorter leads only difference) IMG_20230301_205313.jpg
  • Murata RDER71E104K0K1H03B IMG_20230301_205231.jpg
So I'll be using the TDK, but they are very much not rectangular like the original ☹️ Murata is legit half the width, roundish, and with very long leads.
Neither have any numbers depicting what they actually are, and that is probably the most depressing part.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Looks good. Everything that survives is going to have new caps eventually.

Cap replaced, now just need to get a monitor running to test it. I have one, but it's in a box and running it without a cab/case for protection scares the :poop: out of me...IMG_20230307_125624.jpg

Oh, and correction from earlier, they do in fact have numbers/designations, it's just a microscopic font

So I finally got my monitor running and plugged the 2slot in to see what happens.
I get a black screen with unibios and a blue one with the bios that came with the board :conf:

I'll start a new thread to debug this and link it back here.
Thanks all for your help.

Check your hard-dips and make sure dip 8 isnt in the 'on' position. Additionally unibios 4.0 is bugged on multi-slot boards and if there are no games installed it will sometimes just give a black screen.
