Anything beyond Wikipedia would be of great use, just not sure where to go at this point.

http://www.amazon.com/Japanese-Tales-Pantheon-Folklore-Library/dp/0375714510

I read this for a college class (that was connected to a classical Japanese class) and I honestly couldn't put it down it was so interesting.

how is this set for illustrations?

https://www.youtube.com/results?lclk=long&search_query=yokai+monsters+and+ghosts&filters=long
is that the same book(that third result on youtube_audiobook)? I was just looking for those black and white movies I got from rightstuf that I only found snippets of.

eh, free is better?

There is this: http://www.amazon.com/Fox-Jewel-Mea...7458430&sr=8-1&keywords=the+fox+and+the+jewel

I will also agree: This http://www.amazon.com/Japanese-Tales.../dp/0375714510 is amazing ^_^

Momoka (A Graphic Novel) has an excellent story in it where a boy guides his friend through the different levels of the afterlife and says good bye to her.

Anime is also a decent pool from which to view contemporary usage of Japanese Folklore:
Spirited Away
Natsume's Book of Friends
Bakemonogatari

This may also help:

Two classic tales to consider as well:
Tale of the Bamboo Cutter
Journey to the West

Lafcadio Hearn's classic KWAIDAN: Stories and Studies of Strange Things is a good one. It's so old that it's public domain now, over at the Gutenberg project, so it won't cost you anything to check it out:

I'd also recommend Matt Alt and Hiroko Yoda's (an American/Japanese husband/wife team) "Yokai Attack!: The Japanese Monster Survival Guide".
